    Robust Estimation of 3D Human Poses from a Single Image

    Human pose estimation is a key step to action recognition. We propose a method of estimating 3D human poses from a single image, which works in conjunction with an existing 2D pose/joint detector. 3D pose estimation is challenging because multiple 3D poses may correspond to the same 2D pose after projection due to the lack of depth information. Moreover, current 2D pose estimators are usually inaccurate which may cause errors in the 3D estimation. We address the challenges in three ways: (i) We represent a 3D pose as a linear combination of a sparse set of bases learned from 3D human skeletons. (ii) We enforce limb length constraints to eliminate anthropomorphically implausible skeletons. (iii) We estimate a 3D pose by minimizing the L1L_1-norm error between the projection of the 3D pose and the corresponding 2D detection. The L1L_1-norm loss term is robust to inaccurate 2D joint estimations. We use the alternating direction method (ADM) to solve the optimization problem efficiently. Our approach outperforms the state-of-the-arts on three benchmark datasets

    Lifting from the Deep: Convolutional 3D Pose Estimation from a Single Image

    We propose a unified formulation for the problem of 3D human pose estimation from a single raw RGB image that reasons jointly about 2D joint estimation and 3D pose reconstruction to improve both tasks. We take an integrated approach that fuses probabilistic knowledge of 3D human pose with a multi-stage CNN architecture and uses the knowledge of plausible 3D landmark locations to refine the search for better 2D locations. The entire process is trained end-to-end, is extremely efficient and obtains state- of-the-art results on Human3.6M outperforming previous approaches both on 2D and 3D errors.Comment: Paper presented at CVPR 1

    Rethinking Pose in 3D: Multi-stage Refinement and Recovery for Markerless Motion Capture

    We propose a CNN-based approach for multi-camera markerless motion capture of the human body. Unlike existing methods that first perform pose estimation on individual cameras and generate 3D models as post-processing, our approach makes use of 3D reasoning throughout a multi-stage approach. This novelty allows us to use provisional 3D models of human pose to rethink where the joints should be located in the image and to recover from past mistakes. Our principled refinement of 3D human poses lets us make use of image cues, even from images where we previously misdetected joints, to refine our estimates as part of an end-to-end approach. Finally, we demonstrate how the high-quality output of our multi-camera setup can be used as an additional training source to improve the accuracy of existing single camera models.Comment: International Conference on 3DVision (3dv

    More is Better: 3D Human Pose Estimation from Complementary Data Sources

    Computer Vision (CV) research has been playing a strategic role in many different complex scenarios that are becoming fundamental components in our everyday life. From Augmented/Virtual reality (AR/VR) to Human-Robot interactions, having a visual interpretation of the surrounding world is the first and most important step to develop new advanced systems. As in other research areas, the boost in performance in Computer Vision algorithms has to be mainly attributed to the widespread usage of deep neural networks. Rather than selecting handcrafted features, such approaches identify which are the best features needed to solve a specific task, by learning them from a corpus of carefully annotated data. Such important property of these neural networks comes with a price: they need very large data collections to learn from. Collecting data is a time consuming and expensive operation that varies, being much harder for some tasks than others. In order to limit additional data collection, we therefore need to carefully design models that can extract as much information as possible from already available dataset, even those collected for neighboring domains. In this work I focus on exploring different solutions for and important research problem in Computer Vision, 3D human pose estimation, that is the task of estimating the 3D skeletal representation of a person characterized in an image/s. This has been done for several configurations: monocular camera, multi-view systems and from egocentric perspectives. First, from a single external front facing camera a semi-supervised approach is used to regress the set of 3D joint positions of the represented person. This is done by fully exploiting all of the available information at all the levels of the network, in a novel manner, as well as allowing the model to be trained with partially labelled data. A multi-camera 3D human pose estimation system is introduced by designing a network trainable in a semi-supervised or even unsupervised manner in a multiview system. Unlike standard motion-captures algorithm, demanding a long and time consuming configuration setup at the beginning of each capturing session, this novel approach requires little to none initial system configuration. Finally, a novel architecture is developed to work in a very specific and significantly harder configuration: 3D human pose estimation when using cameras embedded in a head mounted display (HMD). Due to the limited data availability, the model needs to carefully extract information from the data to properly generalize on unseen images. This is particularly useful in AR/VR use case scenarios, demonstrating the versatility of our network to various working conditions

    Wide baseline pose estimation from video with a density-based uncertainty model

    International audienceRobust wide baseline pose estimation is an essential step in the deployment of smart camera networks. In this work, we highlight some current limitations of conventional strategies for relative pose estimation in difficult urban scenes. Then, we propose a solution which relies on an adaptive search of corresponding interest points in synchronized video streams which allows us to converge robustly toward a high-quality solution. The core idea of our algorithm is to build across the image space a nonstationary mapping of the local pose estimation uncertainty, based on the spatial distribution of interest points. Subsequently, the mapping guides the selection of new observations from the video stream in order to prioritize the coverage of areas of high uncertainty. With an additional step in the initial stage, the proposed algorithm may also be used for refining an existing pose estimation based on the video data; this mode allows for performing a data-driven self-calibration task for stereo rigs for which accuracy is critical, such as onboard medical or vehicular systems. We validate our method on three different datasets which cover typical scenarios in pose estimation. The results show a fast and robust convergence of the solution, with a significant improvement, compared to single image-based alternatives, of the RMSE of ground-truth matches, and of the maximum absolute error

    Motion-DVAE: Unsupervised learning for fast human motion denoising

    Pose and motion priors are crucial for recovering realistic and accurate human motion from noisy observations. Substantial progress has been made on pose and shape estimation from images, and recent works showed impressive results using priors to refine frame-wise predictions. However, a lot of motion priors only model transitions between consecutive poses and are used in time-consuming optimization procedures, which is problematic for many applications requiring real-time motion capture. We introduce Motion-DVAE, a motion prior to capture the short-term dependencies of human motion. As part of the dynamical variational autoencoder (DVAE) models family, Motion-DVAE combines the generative capability of VAE models and the temporal modeling of recurrent architectures. Together with Motion-DVAE, we introduce an unsupervised learned denoising method unifying regression- and optimization-based approaches in a single framework for real-time 3D human pose estimation. Experiments show that the proposed approach reaches competitive performance with state-of-the-art methods while being much faster
