Calculators in middle school mathematics classrooms
Calculators can be a catalyst for all mathematical learning. Arithmetic skills are necessary life tools. Doing mental math requires basic facts mastery with estimation skills. Using a calculator successfully and evaluating the answer requires an understanding of the necessary arithmetic processes and the ability to identify a reasonable solution.
Like all technology available in the K-12 school setting, calculators should be viewed as tools to facilitate learning and logical reasoning. Students need to be prepared for the jobs of the future, many of which occupations have not yet even been created. The motivation for learning any skill in life is that skill\u27s eventual application. Using calculators will allow children to learn how to problem solve, a critical aptitude for success in these novel, and as yet, uncreated vocations. Calculators need to move past the check problems tool and onto the new role of problem-solver (Schmidt, 1997)
A Survey of Satisfiability Modulo Theory
Satisfiability modulo theory (SMT) consists in testing the satisfiability of
first-order formulas over linear integer or real arithmetic, or other theories.
In this survey, we explain the combination of propositional satisfiability and
decision procedures for conjunctions known as DPLL(T), and the alternative
"natural domain" approaches. We also cover quantifiers, Craig interpolants,
polynomial arithmetic, and how SMT solvers are used in automated software

Heuristics and representational change in two-move matchstick tasks
Insight problems are problems where the problem solver struggles to find a solution until * aha! * the solution suddenly appears. Two contemporary theories suggest that insight problems are difficult either because problem solvers begin with an incorrect representation of the problem, or that problem solvers apply inappropriate heuristics to the problem. The relative contributions of representational change and inappropriate heuristics on the process of insight problem solving was studied with a task that required the problem solver to move two matchsticks in order to transform an incorrect arithmetic statement into a correct one. Problem solvers (N = 120) worked on two different types of two-move matchstick arithmetic problems that both varied with respect to the effectiveness of heuristics and to the degree of a necessary representational change of the problem representation. A strong influence of representational change on solution rates was found whereas the influence of heuristics had minimal effects on solution rates. That is, the difficulty of insight problems within the two-move matchstick arithmetic domain is governed by the degree of representational change required. A model is presented that details representational change as the necessary condition for ensuring that appropriate heuristics can be applied on the proper problem representation
Stochastic rounding and reduced-precision fixed-point arithmetic for solving neural ordinary differential equations
Although double-precision floating-point arithmetic currently dominates
high-performance computing, there is increasing interest in smaller and simpler
arithmetic types. The main reasons are potential improvements in energy
efficiency and memory footprint and bandwidth. However, simply switching to
lower-precision types typically results in increased numerical errors. We
investigate approaches to improving the accuracy of reduced-precision
fixed-point arithmetic types, using examples in an important domain for
numerical computation in neuroscience: the solution of Ordinary Differential
Equations (ODEs). The Izhikevich neuron model is used to demonstrate that
rounding has an important role in producing accurate spike timings from
explicit ODE solution algorithms. In particular, fixed-point arithmetic with
stochastic rounding consistently results in smaller errors compared to single
precision floating-point and fixed-point arithmetic with round-to-nearest
across a range of neuron behaviours and ODE solvers. A computationally much
cheaper alternative is also investigated, inspired by the concept of dither
that is a widely understood mechanism for providing resolution below the least
significant bit (LSB) in digital signal processing. These results will have
implications for the solution of ODEs in other subject areas, and should also
be directly relevant to the huge range of practical problems that are

On Optimization Modulo Theories, MaxSMT and Sorting Networks
Optimization Modulo Theories (OMT) is an extension of SMT which allows for
finding models that optimize given objectives. (Partial weighted) MaxSMT --or
equivalently OMT with Pseudo-Boolean objective functions, OMT+PB-- is a
very-relevant strict subcase of OMT. We classify existing approaches for MaxSMT
or OMT+PB in two groups: MaxSAT-based approaches exploit the efficiency of
state-of-the-art MAXSAT solvers, but they are specific-purpose and not always
applicable; OMT-based approaches are general-purpose, but they suffer from
intrinsic inefficiencies on MaxSMT/OMT+PB problems.
We identify a major source of such inefficiencies, and we address it by
enhancing OMT by means of bidirectional sorting networks. We implemented this
idea on top of the OptiMathSAT OMT solver. We run an extensive empirical
evaluation on a variety of problems, comparing MaxSAT-based and OMT-based
techniques, with and without sorting networks, implemented on top of
OptiMathSAT and {\nu}Z. The results support the effectiveness of this idea, and
