    Observer-based Fault Detection and Diagnosis for Mechanical Transmission Systems with Sensorless Variable Speed Drives

    Observer based approaches are commonly embedded in sensorless variable speed drives for the purpose of speed control. It estimates system variables to produce errors or residual signals in conjunction with corresponding measurements. The residual signals then are relied to tune control parameters to maintain operational performance even if there are considerable disturbances such as noises and component faults. Obviously, this control strategy outcomes robust control performances. However, it may produce adverse consequences to the system when faults progress to high severity. To prevent the occurrences of such consequences, this research proposes the utilisation of residual signals as detection features to raise alerts for incipient faults. Based on a gear transmission system with a sensorless variable speed drive (VSD), observers for speed, flux and torque are developed for examining their residuals under two mechanical faults: tooth breakage with different degrees of severities and shortage of lubricant at different levels are investigated. It shows that power residual signals can be based on to indicate different faults, showing that the observer based approaches are effective for monitoring VSD based mechanical systems. Moreover, it also shows that these two types fault can be separated based on the dynamic components in the voltage signals

    Electrified vehicular industry is growing at a rapid pace with a global increase in production of electric vehicles (EVs) along with several new automotive cars companies coming to compete with the big car industries. The technology of EV has evolved rapidly in the last decade. But still the looming fear of low driving range, inability to charge rapidly like filling up gasoline for a conventional gas car, and lack of enough EV charging stations are just a few of the concerns. With the onset of self-driving cars, and its popularity in integrating them into electric vehicles leads to increase in safety both for the passengers inside the vehicle as well as the people outside. Since electric vehicles have not been widely used over an extended period of time to evaluate the failure rate of the powertrain of the EV, a general but definite understanding of motor failures can be developed from the usage of motors in industrial application.     Evaluation of saliency tracking as an alternative for health monitoring in PMSM-drives under nonstationary conditions

    This paper evaluates the capability of saliency tracking to assess the health condition of permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives operating under nonstationary conditions. The evaluated scheme is based on saliency tracking methods, which are associated to the accurate sensorless control of AC drives without zero speed limitations. In this work two representative saliency tracking architectures are evaluated: High Frequency (HF) injection, and PWM transient excitation. Although a monitoring approach based on HF injection was previously reported, a comparative study to evaluate the most representative saliency tracking schemes to assess health condition in drives was still missing. The aim of this work is to fill out this gap by evaluating and comparing two saliency-based monitoring schemes (one based on HF-injection and the other based on PWM transient excitation) to evaluate their performance in the presence of inter-turn winding faults. Simulation and experimental results are presented which confirm that both schemes offer excellent detection capabilities and that are suitable for drives operating under nonstationary conditions including standstill operation. Significant differences are also found for instance, PWM transient excitation offers improved accuracy since the approach is not affected by the inverter nonlinearities and is suitable for full-speed range applications. The main drawback here is complexity and the hardware requirements. Schemes based on HF-injection proved to be very simple and provide comparable results; however a good performance is only guaranteed for the zero-to-medium speed range applications which limit their applicability

    On-line Condition Monitoring, Fault Detection and Diagnosis in Electrical Machines and Power Electronic Converters

    The objective of this PhD research is to develop robust, and non-intrusive condition monitoring methods for induction motors fed by closed-loop inverters. The flexible energy forms synthesized by these connected power electronic converters greatly enhance the performance and expand the operating region of induction motors. They also significantly alter the fault behavior of these electric machines and complicate the fault detection and protection. The current state of the art in condition monitoring of power-converter-fed electric machines is underdeveloped as compared to the maturing condition monitoring techniques for grid-connected electric machines. This dissertation first investigates the stator turn-to-turn fault modelling for induction motors (IM) fed by a grid directly. A novel and more meaningful model of the motor itself was developed and a comprehensive study of the closed-loop inverter drives was conducted. A direct torque control (DTC) method was selected for controlling IM’s electromagnetic torque and stator flux-linkage amplitude in industrial applications. Additionally, a new driver based on DTC rules, predictive control theory and fuzzy logic inference system for the IM was developed. This novel controller improves the performance of the torque control on the IM as it reduces most of the disadvantages of the classical and predictive DTC drivers. An analytical investigation of the impacts of the stator inter-turn short-circuit of the machine in the controller and its reaction was performed. This research sets a based knowledge and clear foundations of the events happening inside the IM and internally in the DTC when the machine is damaged by a turn fault in the stator. This dissertation also develops a technique for the health monitoring of the induction machine under stator turn failure. The developed technique was based on the monitoring of the off-diagonal term of the sequence component impedance matrix. Its advantages are that it is independent of the IM parameters, it is immune to the sensors’ errors, it requires a small learning stage, compared with NN, and it is not intrusive, robust and online. The research developed in this dissertation represents a significant advance that can be utilized in fault detection and condition monitoring in industrial applications, transportation electrification as well as the utilization of renewable energy microgrids. To conclude, this PhD research focuses on the development of condition monitoring techniques, modelling, and insightful analyses of a specific type of electric machine system. The fundamental ideas behind the proposed condition monitoring technique, model and analysis are quite universal and appeals to a much wider variety of electric machines connected to power electronic converters or drivers. To sum up, this PhD research has a broad beneficial impact on a wide spectrum of power-converter-fed electric machines and is thus of practical importance

    Performance of Induction Machines

    Induction machines are one of the most important technical applications for both the industrial world and private use. Since their invention (achievements of Galileo Ferraris, Nikola Tesla, and Michal Doliwo-Dobrowolski), they have been widely used in different electrical drives and as generators, thanks to their features such as reliability, durability, low price, high efficiency, and resistance to failure. The methods for designing and using induction machines are similar to the methods used in other electric machines but have their own specificity. Many issues discussed here are based on the fundamental achievements of authors such as Nasar, Boldea, Yamamura, Tegopoulos, and Kriezis, who laid the foundations for the development of induction machines, which are still relevant today. The control algorithms are based on the achievements of Blaschke (field vector-oriented control) and Depenbrock or Takahashi (direct torque control), who created standards for the control of induction machines. Today’s induction machines must meet very stringent requirements of reliability, high efficiency, and performance. Thanks to the application of highly efficient numerical algorithms, it is possible to design induction machines faster and at a lower cost. At the same time, progress in materials science and technology enables the development of new machine topologies. The main objective of this book is to contribute to the development of induction machines in all areas of their applications

    Modulation signal bispectrum analysis of electric signals for the detection and diagnosis of compound faults in induction motors with sensorless drives

    As a prime driver, induction motor is the most electric energy consuming component in industry. The exposure of the motor to stator winding asymmetry, combined with broken rotor bar fault significantly increases the temperature and reduces the efficiency and life of the motor. Accurate and timely diagnosis of these faults will help to maintain motors operating under optimal status and avoid excessive energy consumption and severe damages to systems. This paper examines the performance of diagnosing the effect of asymmetry stator winding on broken rotor bar (BRB) faults under closed loop operation modes. It examines the effectiveness of conventional diagnostic features in both motor current and voltage signals using spectrum and modulation signal bispectrum analysis (MSBA). Evaluation results show that the combined faults cause an additional increase in the sideband amplitude and this increase in sideband can be observed in both the current and voltage signals under the sensorless control mode. MSB analysis has a good noise reduction capability and produces a more accurate and reliable diagnosis in that it gives a more correct indication of the fault severity and its location for all operating conditions
