On the Patent Claim Eligibility Prediction Using Text Mining Techniques

    Get PDF
With the widespread of computer software in recent decades, software patent has become controversial for the patent system. Of the many patentability requirements, patentable subject matter serves as a gatekeeping function to prevent a patent from preempting future innovation. Software patents may easily fall into the gray area of abstract ideas, whose allowance may hinder future innovation. However, without a clear definition of abstract ideas, determining the patent claim subject matter eligibility is a challenging task for examiners and applicants. In this research, in order to solve the software patent eligibility issues, we propose an effective model to determine patent claim eligibility by text-mining and machine learning techniques. Drawing upon USPTO issued guidelines, we identify 66 patent cases to design domain knowledge features, including abstractness features and distinguishable word features, as well as other textual features, to develop the claim eligibility prediction model. The experiment results show our proposed model reaches the accuracy of more than 80%, and domain knowledge features play a crucial role in our prediction model

This allows us to differentiate between more and less important technological trends in robotics based on their stage of diffusion and position in the space of knowledge represented by a topic graph, where some topics appear isolated while others are highly interconnected. Furthermore, utilizing external reference texts that characterize service robots from a technical perspective, we propose and apply a novel approach to match the constructed topics to service robotics. The matching procedure is based on frequency and exclusivity of words overlapping between the patents and the reference texts. We identify around 20 topics belonging to service robotics. Our results corroborate earlier findings, but also provide novel insights on the content and stage of development of application areas in service robotics. With this study we contribute to a better understanding of the highly dynamic field of robotics as well as to new practices of utilizing the topic modeling approach, matching the resulting topics to external classifications and applying to them metrics from graph theory

Scope of partial least-squares regression applied to the enantiomeric composition determination of ketoprofen from strongly overlapped chromatographic profiles

Valuable quantitative information could be obtained from strongly overlapped chromatographic profiles of two enantiomers by using proper chemometric methods. Complete separation profiles where the peaks are fully resolved are difficult to achieve in chiral separation methods, and this becomes a particularly severe problem in case that the analyst need to measure the chiral purity, i.e., when one of the enantiomers is present in the sample in very low concentrations. In this report, we explore the scope of a multivariate chemometric technique based on unfolded partial least-squares regression, as a mathematical tool to solve this quite frequent difficulty. This technique was applied to obtain quantitative results from partially overlapped chromatographic profiles of R- and S-ketoprofen, with different values of enantioresolution factors (from 0.81 down to less than 0.2 resolution units), and also at several different S:R enantiomeric ratios. Enantiomeric purity below 1% was determined with excellent precision even from almost completely overlapped signals. All these assays were tested on the most demanding condition, i.e., when the minor peak elutes immediately after the main peak. The results were validated using univariate calibration of completely resolved profiles and the method applied to the determination of enantiomeric purity of commercial pharmaceuticals.Fil: Padro, Juan Manuel. Mining User-generated Content of Mobile Patient Portal: Dimensions of User Experience

    Get PDF
Patient portals are positioned as a central component of patient engagement through the potential to change the physician-patient relationship and enable chronic disease self-management. The incorporation of patient portals provides the promise to deliver excellent quality, at optimized costs, while improving the health of the population. This study extends the existing literature by extracting dimensions related to the Mobile Patient Portal Use. We use a topic modeling approach to systematically analyze users’ feedback from the actual use of a common mobile patient portal, Epic\u27s MyChart. Comparing results of Latent Dirichlet Allocation analysis with those of human analysis validated the extracted topics. Practically, the results provide insights into adopting mobile patient portals, revealing opportunities for improvement and to enhance the design of current basic portals. Theoretically, the findings inform the social-technical systems and Task-Technology Fit theories in the healthcare field and emphasize important healthcare structural and social aspects. Further, findings inform the humanization of healthcare framework, support the results of existing studies, and introduce new important design dimensions (i.e., aspects) that influence patient satisfaction and adherence to patient portal
