Continuous Speech Recognition of Kazakh Language

This article describes the methods of creating a system of recognizing the continuous speech of Kazakh language. Studies on recognition of Kazakh speech in comparison with other languages began relatively recently, that is after obtaining independence of the country, and belongs to low resource languages. A large amount of data is required to create a reliable system and evaluate it accurately. A database has been created for the Kazakh language, consisting of a speech signal and corresponding transcriptions. The continuous speech has been composed of 200 speakers of different genders and ages, and the pronunciation vocabulary of the selected language. Traditional models and deep neural networks have been used to train the system. As a result, a word error rate (WER) of 30.01% has been obtained

Coping with Alternate Formulations of Questions and Answers

We present in this chapter the QALC system which has participated in the four TREC QA evaluations. We focus here on the problem of linguistic variation in order to be able to relate questions and answers. We present first, variation at the term level which consists in retrieving questions terms in document sentences even if morphologic, syntactic or semantic variations alter them. Our second subject matter concerns variation at the sentence level that we handle as different partial reformulations of questions. Questions are associated with extraction patterns based on the question syntactic type and the object that is under query. We present the whole system thus allowing situating how QALC deals with variation, and different evaluations

New perspectives on cohesion and coherence: Implications for translation

The contributions to this volume investigate relations of cohesion and coherence as well as instantiations of discourse phenomena and their interaction with information structure in multilingual contexts. Some contributions concentrate on procedures to analyze cohesion and coherence from a corpus-linguistic perspective. Others have a particular focus on textual cohesion in parallel corpora that include both originals and translated texts.
