Além disso, este trabalho apresenta e descreve DoIt4Me ("do it for me"), uma ferramenta de gerenciamento remoto capaz de melhorar a segurança, a administração e o desempenho de cada máquina dessas redesAbstract: The administration, the maintenance of the security and the management of large Windows NT networks are challenging tasks. Some tasks can be extremely laborious, such as: software remote install action, auditing and updating the security configurations or to improve the performance of each network machine. To PC or NetPC? Hmmm …what the heck, let’s give it a go!
Some would argue that the time for NCs or NetPCs has either not yet come or
has long passed. Flinders has been watching and waiting for some time now.
We had planned to try out this “new” approach in a small, controlled way in
1998, perhaps with a small server and up to 10 NetPCs. However, when
university funding became available to provide 100 library workstations for
student Web access to flexible delivery initiatives being developed in 1998, the
Library was faced with a decision. Should we purchase 100 PC workstations
with no additional staff to support this significant increase in public
equipment, or should we test the theory that significant savings in application
and desktop support costs can be realised with a NetPC type solution? Are
they really as fast as normal PCs and are they in fact, easier to manage and
support?
This paper reports the reasons why the Flinders University Library chose the
thin client NC solution in preference to standard fat client PCs, why we
thought it particularly appropriate for student applications, how we
implemented the new system, what problems we encountered and how close to
reality we found the promised benefits, to both end users and system
managers
Using the CERN generic Windows infrastructure in a specific control environment
CERN has a large Windows 95/NT infrastructure with more than 3500 PCs connected that is used as one of the main information services for the laboratory. This infrastructure is used for a wide set of services, including Office Automation, Computing Aided Engineering, Calculations, Software Development, and ... controls. This paper will describe the CERN generic infrastructure for Windows 95 and Windows NT and then give several examples of PC control applications and future directions. The implementation of an object oriented device server based on Windows NT and ActiveX in the CERN ISOLDE-REX experiment will be reported
Using Oracle to Augment the Information Systems Curriculum
Oracle Corporation makes its software products available to educational institutions at minimal cost. This tutorial explores options for procuring, installing, and administering an Oracle client/server database in an academic setting, and describes how the Oracle software can be used in specific areas in the information systems curriculum. It also presents results of a survey investigating how IS instructors currently use Oracle, and describes the benefits and challenges they are experiencing
A Web-based Distance Learning System in Business Administration Experiences from an Inter-Nordic Course
The paper presents a specially constructed Web-based tool, WebGPSS, developed in Sweden, for teaching business students simulation. The tool includes a Java Applet that provides a Graphical Users Interface, by which the student can build a simulation model of a system, such as an inventory system. The model is then run on a remote server, which then sends result graphs and tables over the Web to the student computer. The paper furthermore discusses the experiences made when using this tool in a distance-learning course at the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration (NHH) in Bergen, in 2000 – 2002.Web-based; Distance learning; Simulation; GPSS; Java
