    Towards next generation coordination infrastructures

    Coordination infrastructures play a central role in the engineering of multiagent systems. Since the advent of agent technology, research on coordination infrastructures has produced a significant number of infrastructures with varying features. In this paper, we review the the state-of-the-art coordination infrastructures with the purpose of identifying open research challenges that next generation coordination infrastructures should address. Our analysis concludes that next generation coordination infrastructures must address a number of challenges: (i) to become socially aware, by facilitating human interaction within a MAS; (ii) to assist agents in their decision making by providing decision support that helps them reduce the scope of reasoning and facilitates the achievement of their goals; and (iii) to increase openness to support on-line, fully decentralised design and execution.     Modelling the Social Contract: An agent-based Model of Hobbes' Contract Theory

    The aim of this paper is to build a computational model that presents the effects of social dynamics such as evolution on populations applying the theory of Hobbesian Social Contract, social learning and norm diffusion. The phenomenon we are studying is the so-called tragedy of the commons, in which individual agents, having open access to a resource unconstrained by common social structures, act according to their own self-interest, seeking to maximise their own profits. Developing the theoretical framework and agent-based model, we applied to our artificial environment the norm associated with altruism, which modifies agents' behaviour during the simulation, which in turn affects the distribution of wealth. Through the behavioural space, we show that under certain circumstances specified in the parameter, it is possible to obtain a social contract and, as a result, a state of equilibrium. We show that individuals who have obtained the norm are able to enter into a contract, resulting in a rising wealth of the population and a more equilibrium distribution, while if they do not, more inequalities emerge. However, our model is a simplification of Hobbes' theory, admittedly, our agents can spontaneously establish cooperation but there are no complex structures, such as psychological ones, or moral cognition. We believe that this is a skeletal description of the Hobbesian social contract, in which self-interested individuals without obligation to cooperate agree to abide by a norm and its benefits. Depending on how profitable cooperation is (due to the redistribution) and the number of altruistic agents, the community members work for the common good

    GROVE: A computationally grounded model for rational intention revision in BDI agents

    A fundamental aspect of Belief-Desire-Intention (BDI) agents is intention revision. Agents revise their intentions in order to maintain consistency between their intentions and beliefs, and consistency between intentions. A rational agent must also account for the optimality of their intentions in the case of revision. To that end I present GROVE, a model of rational intention revision for BDI agents. The semantics of a GROVE agent is defined in terms of constraints and preferences on possible future executions of an agent’s plans. I show that GROVE is weakly rational in the sense of Grant et al. and imposes more constraints on executions than the operational semantics for goal lifecycles proposed by Harland et al. As it may not be computationally feasible to consider all possible future executions, I propose a bounded version of GROVE that samples the set of future executions, and state conditions under which bounded GROVE commits to a rational execution

    Multi-Agent Systems

    This Special Issue ""Multi-Agent Systems"" gathers original research articles reporting results on the steadily growing area of agent-oriented computing and multi-agent systems technologies. After more than 20 years of academic research on multi-agent systems (MASs), in fact, agent-oriented models and technologies have been promoted as the most suitable candidates for the design and development of distributed and intelligent applications in complex and dynamic environments. With respect to both their quality and range, the papers in this Special Issue already represent a meaningful sample of the most recent advancements in the field of agent-oriented models and technologies. In particular, the 17 contributions cover agent-based modeling and simulation, situated multi-agent systems, socio-technical multi-agent systems, and semantic technologies applied to multi-agent systems. In fact, it is surprising to witness how such a limited portion of MAS research already highlights the most relevant usage of agent-based models and technologies, as well as their most appreciated characteristics. We are thus confident that the readers of Applied Sciences will be able to appreciate the growing role that MASs will play in the design and development of the next generation of complex intelligent systems.
