    Language Independent Gender Identification Through Keystroke Analysis

    Purpose – In this work we investigate the feasibility of iden tifying the gender of an author by measuring the keystroke duration when typing a message. Design/methodology/approach – Three classifiers were constructed and tested. We empirically evaluated the effectiveness of the classifiers by using empirical data. We used primary data as well as a publicly available dataset containing keystrokes from a diff erent language to validate the language independence assumption. Findings – The results of this work indicate that it is possible to identify the gender of an author by analyzing keystroke durations with a probability of success in the region of 70%. Research limitations/implications – The proposed approach was validated with a limited number of participants and languages, yet the statistical tests show the significance of the results. However, t his approach will be further tested with other languages. Practical implications – Having the ability to identify the gender of an aut hor of a certain piece of text has value in digital forensics, as the proposed method will be a source of circumstantial evidence for “putting fingers on keyboard” and for arbitrating cases where the true origin of a message needs to be identified. Social implications – If the proposed method is included as part of a text composing system (such as email, and instant messaging applications) it could increase trust toward the applications that use it and may also work as a deterrent for crimes involving forgery. Originality/value – The proposed approach combines and adapts techniques from the domains of biometric authentication and data classification

    Predictive biometrics: A review and analysis of predicting personal characteristics from biometric data

    Interest in the exploitation of soft biometrics information has continued to develop over the last decade or so. In comparison with traditional biometrics, which focuses principally on person identification, the idea of soft biometrics processing is to study the utilisation of more general information regarding a system user, which is not necessarily unique. There are increasing indications that this type of data will have great value in providing complementary information for user authentication. However, the authors have also seen a growing interest in broadening the predictive capabilities of biometric data, encompassing both easily definable characteristics such as subject age and, most recently, `higher level' characteristics such as emotional or mental states. This study will present a selective review of the predictive capabilities, in the widest sense, of biometric data processing, providing an analysis of the key issues still adequately to be addressed if this concept of predictive biometrics is to be fully exploited in the future

    False Identity Detection Using Complex Sentences

    The use of faked identities is a current issue for both physical and online security. In this paper, we test the differences between subjects who report their true identity and the ones who give fake identity responding to control, simple, and complex questions. Asking complex questions is a new procedure for increasing liars' cognitive load, which is presented in this paper for the first time. The experiment consisted in an identity verification task, during which response time and errors were collected. Twenty participants were instructed to lie about their identity, whereas the other 20 were asked to respond truthfully. Different machine learning (ML) models were trained, reaching an accuracy level around 90-95% in distinguishing liars from truth tellers based on error rate and response time. Then, to evaluate the generalization and replicability of these models, a new sample of 10 participants were tested and classified, obtaining an accuracy between 80 and 90%. In short, results indicate that liars may be efficiently distinguished from truth tellers on the basis of their response times and errors to complex questions, with an adequate generalization accuracy of the classification models

    Age Detection Through Keystroke Dynamics From User Authentication Failures

    In this paper an incident response approach is proposed for handling detections of authentication failures in systems that employ dynamic biometric authentication and more specifically keystroke user recognition. The main component of the approach is a multi layer perceptron focusing on the age classification of a user. Empirical findings show that the classifier can detect the age of the subject with a probability that is far from the uniform random distribution, making the proposed method suitable for providing supporting yet circumstantial evidence during e-discovery

    Psychomotor Impairment Detection via Finger Interactions with a Computer Keyboard During Natural Typing

    Modern digital devices and appliances are capable of monitoring the timing of button presses, or finger interactions in general, with a sub-millisecond accuracy. However, the massive amount of high resolution temporal information that these devices could collect is currently being discarded. Multiple studies have shown that the act of pressing a button triggers well defined brain areas which are known to be affected by motor-compromised conditions. In this study, we demonstrate that the daily interaction with a computer keyboard can be employed as means to observe and potentially quantify psychomotor impairment. We induced a psychomotor impairment via a sleep inertia paradigm in 14 healthy subjects, which is detected by our classifier with an Area Under the ROC Curve (AUC) of 0.93/0.91. The detection relies on novel features derived from key-hold times acquired on standard computer keyboards during an uncontrolled typing task. These features correlate with the progression to psychomotor impairment (p < 0.001) regardless of the content and language of the text typed, and perform consistently with different keyboards. The ability to acquire longitudinal measurements of subtle motor changes from a digital device without altering its functionality may allow for early screening and follow-up of motor-compromised neurodegenerative conditions, psychological disorders or intoxication at a negligible cost in the general population.Comunidad de Madri
