Developing and integrating tools in Eclipse/PCTE

The whole area of software engineering environments is an emerging one. Such environments have become necessary due to the rapid changes which have occurred in the software industry in the last twenty years. The desire is to produce products of high quality and at a reasonable cost. Unfortunately history shows that, in general, software systems rarely met the specific need for which they were developed and were often unreliable, inefficient , poorly documented and required considerable maintenance. One of the main areas of research into increasing both the productivity and the quality of software has been the use of software engineering environments. The area of software engineering environments is a changing one with evolving definitions. What can be stated is that a key objective of software engineering environments is the support of software process from requirements definition through to system maintenance. Such support can only be provided through the development of integrated sets of tools each supporting various aspects of the software development process. In order for tools to be fully integrated and have the same ’look and feel’ it is necessary that they are developed on a common platform, providing all the facilities needed for tool development and integration. Such a platform is the Eclipse tool builder’s kit based on the Portable Common Tool Environment (PCTE). The work in this thesis was based on an evaluation of this development platform for developing and integrating software tools, particularly real-time telecommunications software tools. The work in this thesis was carried out as part of the European Community’s RACE programme. The project was called SPECS 1. The SPECS project is outlined in chapter one of this thesis along with a brief history of the research into software engineering environments to date. The work which I was responsible for involved both the integration of existing toolsets and tools, developed by other partners in the SPECS project, as well as the development of new "native" tools within Eclipse/PCTE. This work was necessary so that the SPECS project could produce an integrated set of tools at the end of its research. It was my job to evaluate the potential of Eclipse/PCTE as a basis for this integration

    Buddhism, Plants and Environmental Ethics

Východní buddhismus, zejména japonský, totiž...The thesis deals with the problem of Buddhist approach to plants through its history and all its lands. Scientific literature and translations of primary sources translated into western languages are the main sources I use. I particularly focus on the question whether Buddhism considers plants as sentient beings and ascribes them the ability to achieve enlightenment. I also deal with pre-Buddhist ideas concerning plants in each particular region. In the case of India I especially focus on Jainism, the historical companion of Buddhism. Furthermore, I put these facts into a broader frame of Buddhist environmental ethics and Buddhist treatment of the natural world. Thus, this paper should also contribute to the discussion about how ecological Buddhism is. In the pre-Buddhist India, plants were believed to be sentient beings and were involved in the cycle of rebirths. This view was accepted by Jains, but Buddhism chose another way. Whereas early parts of the Pali cannon contain rules prohibiting harming plants, later texts explicitly exclude them from the realm of sentience beings. The topic was further dealt mainly by Eastern Buddhism and, on the contrary, mainly overlooked in other regions. Eastern Buddhism, especially in Japan, again ascribed to plants the ability to attain Buddhahood. This doctrine...Institute of Philosophy and Religious StudiesÚstav filosofie a religionistikyFaculty of ArtsFilozofická fakult

The inspiration behind the formal concept of Busan´s Opera House is that of a pearl. A pearl is a gem produced within the soft tissue of a living marine organism. Due to their superior quality, natural pearls have been highly valued as gemstones and objects of beauty for many centuries. Because of this, the word pearl has become a metaphor for something very rare, fine, admirable, and valuable. This is also true for Busan, a living, dynamic, energetic marine center where this project originated as a beauty icon, as a statement of what the city produces and gives to the world: Busan‘s finest. But an object of such beauty cannot be left exposed to the elements, it must be sheltered and cherished. That is why the project was conceived using a bioclimatic scheme, protecting it from the elements, with a shield embracing the pearl but allowing it to shine and be admired. However, a city like Busan cannot produce a generic, unspecific pearl, but rather an extremely rare pearl, a pearl that can only be found in nature, a pearl that has long been venerated in Asia but has only recently been discovered by the West: a Melo Pearl. In this way Busan achieves something that had, until now, been impossible: to culture a Melo Pearl. The main component of our project of the Busan Opera House is its bioclimatic character. The design takes into consideration the environment, the climate of the area and its specific characteristics. Our main interest is to make the best use of local natural resources and climate in order to design a complex that is energy efficient, has low maintenance costs and is a model to be used by future generations

Art, Androgyny, and the Femme Fatale in Decadent Fictions of the Nineteenth Century

This thesis offers a reappraisal of the recurring figure of the femme fatale within Decadent art and literature of the nineteenth century. Despite the ubiquity of studies concerning the femme fatale, most notably within genres such as Film Noir and Romanticism, the Decadent femme fatale has often been relegated to a single chapter or footnote within these studies. It is here the purpose of this thesis to rectify this critical disregard. Combining multiple disciplines (literature, aesthetics, history, mythology and psychology) each of the four chapters of this thesis will locate the femme fatale within nineteenth-century European Decadent texts as represented as a specific objet d’art: the haunted portrait, the corpse-doll, the fragmented sculpture, and the mutilated and/or sculpted body of the androgyne. Invoking Harold Bloom’s theory of the anxiety of influence, the influence and trajectory of each chapter’s respective femme fatale will be traced from the midnineteenth century through to the fin de siècle. By tracing the lineage of the aesthetic impression made by French Decadent writers of the mid-nineteenth century (such as Théophile Gautier and Charles Baudelaire) upon subsequent French and British writers and artists of the latenineteenth century (such as Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Algernon Charles Swinburne, Walter Pater, Rachilde, and Vernon Lee), this thesis interrogates how the re/construction and usage of the Decadent femme fatale was utilized as a means of exploring ulterior philosophies of classical beauty and a fluid range of forbidden sexualities, including androgyny and homoeroticism. Offering interdisciplinary readings of the nineteenth-century Decadent femme fatale, this thesis shows the different ways in which nineteenth-century Decadent writers and artists move beyond the femme fatale’s malevolence, though without losing sight of it, to explore the mysterious relationships between life and death, art and artifice, pleasure and pain, and the seen and unseen

An investigation of firm specific and macroeconomic variables and their influence on emerging market stock returns

Includes bibliographical references. This paper aims to expand on the growing area of asset pricing research in developed markets by extending such analyses to those nations considered to be emerging. Of late the accuracy of a previously established cornerstone of asset pricing theory, namely the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) has been questioned. The discovery of numerous firm related anomalies that have predictive power over the cross sectional variation of share returns in excess of that explained by established market proxy models has served to fuel interest and speculation as to the true robustness and exploitability of such influences. These firm specific influences have been termed 'style characteristics' . This study employed the use of the DataStream International Emerging Market Index for the extraction of all firm specific and return data. In addition to the considered 'style' characteristics this study explores the broader systematic effects associated with changes in key macroeconomic variables
