Gait recognition using kinect and locally linear embedding
This paper presents the use of locally linear embedding (LLE) as feature extraction technique for classifying a personâs identity based on their walking gait patterns. Skeleton data acquired from Microsoft Kinect camera were used as an input for (1). Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) and (2). LLE with MLP. The MLP classification accuracy result was used for comparison between both. Several MLP and LLE properties were tested to find the optimal number of setting that can improve the MLP performance. Based on the two methods used, the neural network implemented with LLE showed the better accuracy compared to the neural network alone.Keywords: locally linear embedding; neural network; multilayer perceptron
Two-dimensional approximately harmonic projection for gait recognition
This paper presents a two-dimensional approximately harmonic projection (2DAHP) algorithm for gait recognition. 2DAHP is originated from the approximately harmonic projection (AHP), while 2DAHP offers some advantages over AHP. 1) 2DAHP can preserve the local geometrical structure and cluster structure of image data as AHP. 2) 2DAHP encodes images as matrices or second-order tensors rather than one-dimensional vectors, so 2DAHP can keep the correlation among different coordinates of image data. 3) 2DAHP avoids the singularity problem suffered by AHP. 4) 2DAHP runs faster than AHP. Extensive experiments on gait recognition show the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method
Hierarchical Subquery Evaluation for Active Learning on a Graph
To train good supervised and semi-supervised object classifiers, it is
critical that we not waste the time of the human experts who are providing the
training labels. Existing active learning strategies can have uneven
performance, being efficient on some datasets but wasteful on others, or
inconsistent just between runs on the same dataset. We propose perplexity based
graph construction and a new hierarchical subquery evaluation algorithm to
combat this variability, and to release the potential of Expected Error
Reduction.
Under some specific circumstances, Expected Error Reduction has been one of
the strongest-performing informativeness criteria for active learning. Until
now, it has also been prohibitively costly to compute for sizeable datasets. We
demonstrate our highly practical algorithm, comparing it to other active
learning measures on classification datasets that vary in sparsity,
dimensionality, and size. Our algorithm is consistent over multiple runs and
achieves high accuracy, while querying the human expert for labels at a
frequency that matches their desired time budget.Comment: CVPR 201
Activity Analysis, Summarization, and Visualization for Indoor Human Activity Monitoring
DOI 10.1109/TCSVT.2008.2005612In this work, we study how continuous video monitoring and intelligent video processing can be used in eldercare to assist the independent living of elders and to improve the
efficiency of eldercare practice. More specifically, we develop an automated activity analysis and summarization for eldercare video monitoring. At the object level, we construct an advanced silhouette extraction, human detection and tracking algorithm for indoor environments. At the feature level, we develop an adaptive learning method to estimate the physical location and moving speed of a person from a single camera view without calibration.
At the action level, we explore hierarchical decision tree and dimension reduction methods for human action recognition. We extract important ADL (activities of daily living) statistics for automated functional assessment. To test and evaluate the proposed
algorithms and methods, we deploy the camera system in a real living environment for about a month and have collected more than 200 hours (in excess of 600 G bytes) of activity monitoring videos. Our extensive tests over these massive video datasets demonstrate that the proposed automated activity analysis system

Quadratic Projection Based Feature Extraction with Its Application to Biometric Recognition
This paper presents a novel quadratic projection based feature extraction
framework, where a set of quadratic matrices is learned to distinguish each
class from all other classes. We formulate quadratic matrix learning (QML) as a
standard semidefinite programming (SDP) problem. However, the con- ventional
interior-point SDP solvers do not scale well to the problem of QML for
high-dimensional data. To solve the scalability of QML, we develop an efficient
algorithm, termed DualQML, based on the Lagrange duality theory, to extract
nonlinear features. To evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of the
proposed framework, we conduct extensive experiments on biometric recognition.
Experimental results on three representative biometric recogni- tion tasks,
including face, palmprint, and ear recognition, demonstrate the superiority of
the DualQML-based feature extraction algorithm compared to the current
state-of-the-art algorithm
Out-of-sample generalizations for supervised manifold learning for classification
Supervised manifold learning methods for data classification map data samples
residing in a high-dimensional ambient space to a lower-dimensional domain in a
structure-preserving way, while enhancing the separation between different
classes in the learned embedding. Most nonlinear supervised manifold learning
methods compute the embedding of the manifolds only at the initially available
training points, while the generalization of the embedding to novel points,
known as the out-of-sample extension problem in manifold learning, becomes
especially important in classification applications. In this work, we propose a
semi-supervised method for building an interpolation function that provides an
out-of-sample extension for general supervised manifold learning algorithms
studied in the context of classification. The proposed algorithm computes a
radial basis function (RBF) interpolator that minimizes an objective function
consisting of the total embedding error of unlabeled test samples, defined as
their distance to the embeddings of the manifolds of their own class, as well
as a regularization term that controls the smoothness of the interpolation
function in a direction-dependent way. The class labels of test data and the
interpolation function parameters are estimated jointly with a progressive
procedure. Experimental results on face and object images demonstrate the
potential of the proposed out-of-sample extension algorithm for the
classification of manifold-modeled data sets
Gait-Based Diplegia Classification Using LSMT Networks
Diplegia is a specific subcategory of the wide spectrum of motion disorders gathered under the name of cerebral palsy. Recent works proposed to use gait analysis for diplegia classification paving the way for automated analysis. A clinically established gait-based classification system divides diplegic patients into 4 main forms, each one associated with a peculiar walking pattern. In this work, we apply two different deep learning techniques, namely, multilayer perceptron and recurrent neural networks, to automatically classify children into the 4 clinical forms. For the analysis, we used a dataset comprising gait data of 174 patients collected by means of an optoelectronic system. The measurements describing walking patterns have been processed to extract 27 angular parameters and then used to train both kinds of neural networks. Classification results are comparable with those provided by experts in 3 out of 4 forms
