    Hybrid Search: Effectively Combining Keywords and Semantic Searches

    This paper describes hybrid search, a search method supporting both document and knowledge retrieval via the flexible combination of ontologybased search and keyword-based matching. Hybrid search smoothly copes with lack of semantic coverage of document content, which is one of the main limitations of current semantic search methods. In this paper we define hybrid search formally, discuss its compatibility with the current semantic trends and present a reference implementation: K-Search. We then show how the method outperforms both keyword-based search and pure semantic search in terms of precision and recall in a set of experiments performed on a collection of about 18.000 technical documents. Experiments carried out with professional users show that users understand the paradigm and consider it very powerful and reliable. K-Search has been ported to two applications released at Rolls-Royce plc for searching technical documentation about jet engines

    Securing Arm Platform: From Software-Based To Hardware-Based Approaches

    With the rapid proliferation of the ARM architecture on smart mobile phones and Internet of Things (IoT) devices, the security of ARM platform becomes an emerging problem. In recent years, the number of malware identified on ARM platforms, especially on Android, shows explosive growth. Evasion techniques are also used in these malware to escape from being detected by existing analysis systems. In our research, we first present a software-based mechanism to increase the accuracy of existing static analysis tools by reassembleable bytecode extraction. Our solution collects bytecode and data at runtime, and then reassemble them offline to help static analysis tools to reveal the hidden behavior in an application. Further, we implement a hardware-based transparent malware analysis framework for general ARM platforms to defend against the traditional evasion techniques. Our framework leverages hardware debugging features and Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) to achieve transparent tracing and debugging with reasonable overhead. To learn the security of the involved hardware debugging features, we perform a comprehensive study on the ARM debugging features and summarize the security implications. Based on the implications, we design a novel attack scenario that achieves privilege escalation via misusing the debugging features in inter-processor debugging model. The attack has raised our concern on the security of TEEs and Cyber-physical System (CPS). For a better understanding of the security of TEEs, we investigate the security of various TEEs on different architectures and platforms, and state the security challenges. A study of the deploying the TEEs on edge platform is also presented. For the security of the CPS, we conduct an analysis on the real-world traffic signal infrastructure and summarize the security problems

    Network traffic management for the next generation Internet

    Measurement-based performance evaluation of network traffic is a fundamental prerequisite for the provisioning of managed and controlled services in short timescales, as well as for enabling the accountability of network resources. The steady introduction and deployment of the Internet Protocol Next Generation (IPNG-IPv6) promises a network address space that can accommodate any device capable of generating a digital heart-beat. Under such a ubiquitous communication environment, Internet traffic measurement becomes of particular importance, especially for the assured provisioning of differentiated levels of service quality to the different application flows. The non-identical response of flows to the different types of network-imposed performance degradation and the foreseeable expansion of networked devices raise the need for ubiquitous measurement mechanisms that can be equally applicable to different applications and transports. This thesis introduces a new measurement technique that exploits native features of IPv6 to become an integral part of the Internet's operation, and to provide intrinsic support for performance measurements at the universally-present network layer. IPv6 Extension Headers have been used to carry both the triggers that invoke the measurement activity and the instantaneous measurement indicators in-line with the payload data itself, providing a high level of confidence that the behaviour of the real user traffic flows is observed. The in-line measurements mechanism has been critically compared and contrasted to existing measurement techniques, and its design and a software-based prototype implementation have been documented. The developed system has been used to provisionally evaluate numerous performance properties of a diverse set of application flows, over different-capacity IPv6 experimental configurations. Through experimentation and theoretical argumentation, it has been shown that IPv6-based, in-line measurements can form the basis for accurate and low-overhead performance assessment of network traffic flows in short time-scales, by being dynamically deployed where and when required in a multi-service Internet environment.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo

The common thread is their reliance on, and use of, law and legal mechanisms to govern the source code they write, use, and distribute. The central fact of open source is that maintaining control over source code relies on the existence and efficacy of intellectual property (‘IP’) laws, particularly copyright law. Copyright law is the primary statutory tool that achieves the end of openness, although implemented through private law arrangements at varying points within the software supply chain. This dependent relationship is itself a cause of concern for some philosophically in favour of ‘open’, with some predicting (or hoping) that the free software movement will bring about the end of copyright as a means for protecting software
