    Design and Analysis of RT-Ring: A Protocol for Supporting Real-Time Communications

    Distributed applications with quality of service (QoS) requirements are more and more used in several areas (e.g., automated factory networks, embedded systems, conferencing systems). These applications produce a type of traffic with hard timing requirements, i.e., transmissions must be completed within specified deadlines. To handle these transmissions, the communication system must use real-time protocols to provide a communication service that is able to satisfy the QoS requirements of the distributed applications. In this paper, we propose a new real-time protocol, called RT-Ring, able to support transmissions of both real-time and generic traffic over a ring network. RT-Ring provides both network guarantees and high network resource utilization, while ensuring the compatibility with the emerging differentiated service architectures. Network guarantees are fully proved and high network utilization is highlighted by a comparative study with the FDDI protocol. This comparison shows that RT-Ring network capacities are greater than the corresponding FDDI capacities. In fact, by assuming the FDDI frames with a length equal to the RT-Ring slot size and by using the same traffic load we show that the capacities of FDDI are equal to the lower bound capacities of RT-Ring.     Future benefits and applications of intelligent on-board processing to VSAT services

    The trends and roles of VSAT services in the year 2010 time frame are examined based on an overall network and service model for that period. An estimate of the VSAT traffic is then made and the service and general network requirements are identified. In order to accommodate these traffic needs, four satellite VSAT architectures based on the use of fixed or scanning multibeam antennas in conjunction with IF switching or onboard regeneration and baseband processing are suggested. The performance of each of these architectures is assessed and the key enabling technologies are identified

    Mención Internacional en el título de doctorThe development of Information Technologies in the last decades, especially the last two, together with the introduction of computing devices to the mainstream consumer market, has had the logical consequence of the generalisation of the Internet access. The explosive development of the smartphone market has brought ubiquity to that generalisation, to the point that social interaction, content sharing and content production happens all the time. Social networks have all but increased that trend, maximising the diffusion of multimedia content: images, audio and video, which require high network capacities to be enjoyed quickly. This need for endless bandwidth and speed in information sharing brings challenges that affect mainly optical Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs) and Wide Area Networks (WANs). Furthermore, the wide spreading of Ethernet technologies has also brought the possibility to achieve economies of scale by either extending the reach of Ethernet Local Area Networks (LANs) to the MAN and WAN environment or even integrating them with Storage Area Networks (SANs). Finally, this generalisation of telecommunication technologies in every day life has as a consequence an important rise in energy consumption as well. Because of this, providing energy efficient strategies in networking is key to ensure the scalability of the whole Internet. In this thesis, the main technologies in all the fields mentioned above are reviewed, its core challenges identified and several contributions beyond the state of the art are suggested to improve today’s MANs andWANs. In the first contribution of this thesism, the integration between Metro Ethernet and Wavelength Division Multiplexion (WDM) optical transparent rings is explored by proposing an adaptation architecture to provide efficient broadcast and multicast. The second contribution explores the fusion between transparent WDM and OCDMA architectures to simplify medium access in a ring. Regarding SANs, the third contribution explores the challenges in SANs through the problems of Fibre Channel over Ethernet due to buffer design issues. In this contribution, analysis, design and validation with FCoE traces and simulation is provided to calculate buffer overflow probabilities in the absence of flow control mechanisms taking into account the bursty nature of SAN traffic. Finally, the fourth and last contribution addresses the problems of energy efficiency in Plastic Optical Fibres (POF), a new kind of optical fibre more suitable for transmission in vehicles and for home networking. This contribution suggests two packet coalescing strategies to further improve the energy effiency mechanisms in POFs.El desarrollo de las Tecnologías de la Información en las últimas décadas, especialmente las últimas dos, junto con la introducción de dispositivos informáticos al mercado de masas, ha tenido como consecuencia lógica la generalización del acceso a Internet. El explosivo desarrollo del mercado de teléfonos inteligentes ha añadido un factor de ubicuidad a tal generalización, al extremo de que la interacción social, la compartición y producción de contenidos sucede a cada instante. Las redes sociales no han hecho sino incrementar tal tendencia, maximizando la difusión de contenido multimedia: imágenes, audio y vídeo, los cuales requieren gran capacidad en las redes para poder obtenerse con rapidez. Esta necesidad de ancho de banda ilimitado y velocidad en la compartición de información trae consigo retos que afectan principalmente a las Redes de Área Metropolitana (Metropolitan Area Networks, MANs) y Redes de Área Extensa (Wide Area Networks, WANs). Además, la gran difusión de las tecnologías Ethernet ha traído la posibilidad de alcanzar economías de escala bien extendiendo el alcance de Ethernet más allá de las Redes de Área Local (Local Area Networks, LANs) al entorno de las MAN y las WAN o incluso integrándolas con Redes de Almacenamiento (Storage Area Networks, SANs). Finalmente, esta generalización de las tecnologías de la comunicación en la vida cotidiana tiene también como consecuencia un importante aumento en el consumo de energía. Por tanto, desarrollar estrategias de transmisión en red eficientes energéticamente es clave para asegurar la escalabilidad de Internet. En esta tesis, las principales tecnologías de todos los campos mencionados arriba serán estudiadas, sus más importantes retos identificados y se sugieren varias contribuciones más allá del actual estado del arte para mejorar las actuales MANs y WANs. En la primera contribución de esta tesis, se explora la integración entre Metro Ethernet y anillos ópticos transparentes por Multiplexión en Longitud de Onda (Wavelength Division Multiplex, WDM) mediante la proposición de una arquitectura de adaptación para permitir la difusión y multidifusión eficiente. La segunda contribución explora la fusión entre las arquitecturas transparentes WDM y arquitecturas por Accesso Dividido Múltiple por Códigos Ópticos (OCDMA) para simplificar el acceso en una red en anillo. En lo referente a las SANs, la tercera contribución explora los retos en SANs a través de los problemas de Fibre Channel sobre Ethernet debido a los problemas en el diseño de búferes. En esta contribución, se provee un análisis, diseño y validación con trazas FCoE para calcular las probabilidades de desbordamiento de buffer en ausencia de mecanismos de control de flujo teniendo en cuenta la naturaleza rafagosa del tráfico de SAN. Finalmente, la cuarta y última contribución aborda los problemas de eficiencia energética en Fibras Ópticas Plásticas (POF), una nueva variedad de fibra óptica más adecuada para la transmisión en vehículos y para entornos de red caseros.     A distributed wireless MAC scheme for service differentiation in WLANs.

    Mobile communications is evolving due to the recent technological achievements in wireless networking. Today, wireless networks exist in many forms, providing different types of services in a range of local, wide area and global coverage. The most widely used WLAN standard today is IEEE 802.11. However, it still has problems with providing the QoS required for multimedia services using distributed methods. In this thesis, a new distributed MAC scheme is proposed to support QoS in wireless LANs. In the scheme, stations use CSMA for channel access, with collisions between stations being resolved by sending a set of beacons in a predefined manner, and virtual collisions being resolved by schedulers at the stations. The proposed MAC scheme is analyzed mathematically, for two-priority case, and the results obtained are validated by simulation. The mathematical model estimates the average delay experienced by data packets of priority one and two under different conditions. A performance evaluation study of the proposed MAC scheme as well as the IEEE 802.11 DCF, and IEEE 802.11e EDCF MAC schemes is also done by means of stochastic simulation. It is found that the results obtained by simulation are in very good agreement with the analytical results, thereby validating them. Moreover, the simulation study evaluated different performance measures of these MAC schemes. The results showed that the IEEE 802.11 DCF scheme does not support QoS, but the proposed MAC scheme and the upcoming IEEE 802.11 EDCF both do. In general, the results show that the proposed MAC scheme performs equally or better than the current IEEE 802.11 DCF scheme in every case considered. It is also found that the proposed MAC scheme performs equally well as the upcoming IEEE 802.11e EDCF scheme, in every case considered in this thesis

    MAXIMIZING DATA DOWNLOAD CAPABILITIES FOR FUTURE CONSTELLATION SPACE MISSIONS

    We outline the first step toward the development of a unified space communication network approach, offering more flexibility, robustness, expandability and compatibility with terrestrial networks. The aim is to maximize the data download capabilities of future missions while reducing the development and operational costs. We introduce the current State-of-the-Art in space communications, present the benefits of a unified approach and discuss some challenges that need to be addressed to enable this transition. We focus on developing a suitable dynamic routing algorithm and a reconfigurable simulation framework. A case study on the Magnetospheric Multi-Scale constellation mission shows that both NASAs Deep Space Network and some commercial ground facilities can provide sufficient coverage for this mission and demonstrates the benefits of a unified space network. We also demonstrate the usefulness of a modular simulation framework as a low-cost but powerful tool for evaluating the performance of protocols and architectures in this environment

    Designing new network adaptation and ATM adaptation layers for interactive multimedia applications

    Multimedia services, audiovisual applications composed of a combination of discrete and continuous data streams, will be a major part of the traffic flowing in the next generation of high speed networks. The cornerstones for multimedia are Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) foreseen as the technology for the future Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network (B-ISDN) and audio and video compression algorithms such as MPEG-2 that reduce applications bandwidth requirements. Powerful desktop computers available today can integrate seamlessly the network access and the applications and thus bring the new multimedia services to home and business users. Among these services, those based on multipoint capabilities are expected to play a major role.    Interactive multimedia applications unlike traditional data transfer applications have stringent simultaneous requirements in terms of loss and delay jitter due to the nature of audiovisual information. In addition, such stream-based applications deliver data at a variable rate, in particular if a constant quality is required.    ATM, is able to integrate traffic of different nature within a single network creating interactions of different types that translate into delay jitter and loss. Traditional protocol layers do not have the appropriate mechanisms to provide the required network quality of service (QoS) for such interactive variable bit rate (VBR) multimedia multipoint applications. This lack of functionalities calls for the design of protocol layers with the appropriate functions to handle the stringent requirements of multimedia.    This thesis contributes to the solution of this problem by proposing new Network Adaptation and ATM Adaptation Layers for interactive VBR multimedia multipoint services.    The foundations to build these new multimedia protocol layers are twofold; the requirements of real-time multimedia applications and the nature of compressed audiovisual data.    On this basis, we present a set of design principles we consider as mandatory for a generic Multimedia AAL capable of handling interactive VBR multimedia applications in point-to-point as well as multicast environments. These design principles are then used as a foundation to derive a first set of functions for the MAAL, namely; cell loss detection via sequence numbering, packet delineation, dummy cell insertion and cell loss correction via RSE FEC techniques.    The proposed functions, partly based on some theoretical studies, are implemented and evaluated in a simulated environment. Performances are evaluated from the network point of view using classic metrics such as cell and packet loss. We also study the behavior of the cell loss process in order to evaluate the efficiency to be expected from the proposed cell loss correction method. We also discuss the difficulties to map network QoS parameters to user QoS parameters for multimedia applications and especially for video information. In order to present a complete performance evaluation that is also meaningful to the end-user, we make use of the MPQM metric to map the obtained network performance results to a user level. We evaluate the impact that cell loss has onto video and also the improvements achieved with the MAAL.    All performance results are compared to an equivalent implementation based on AAL5, as specified by the current ITU-T and ATM Forum standards.    An AAL has to be by definition generic. But to fully exploit the functionalities of the AAL layer, it is necessary to have a protocol layer that will efficiently interface the network and the applications. This role is devoted to the Network Adaptation Layer.    The network adaptation layer (NAL) we propose, aims at efficiently interface the applications to the underlying network to achieve a reliable but low overhead transmission of video streams. Since this requires an a priori knowledge of the information structure to be transmitted, we propose the NAL to be codec specific.    The NAL targets interactive multimedia applications. These applications share a set of common requirements independent of the encoding scheme used. This calls for the definition of a set of design principles that should be shared by any NAL even if the implementation of the functions themselves is codec specific. On the basis of the design principles, we derive the common functions that NALs have to perform which are mainly two; the segmentation and reassembly of data packets and the selective data protection.    On this basis, we develop an MPEG-2 specific NAL. It provides a perceptual syntactic information protection, the PSIP, which results in an intelligent and minimum overhead protection of video information. The PSIP takes advantage of the hierarchical organization of the compressed video data, common to the majority of the compression algorithms, to perform a selective data protection based on the perceptual relevance of the syntactic information.    The transmission over the combined NAL-MAAL layers shows significant improvement in terms of CLR and perceptual quality compared to equivalent transmissions over AAL5 with the same overhead.    The usage of the MPQM as a performance metric, which is one of the main contributions of this thesis, leads to a very interesting observation. The experimental results show that for unexpectedly high CLRs, the average perceptual quality remains close to the original value. The economical potential of such an observation is very important. Given that the data flows are VBR, it is possible to improve network utilization by means of statistical multiplexing. It is therefore possible to reduce the cost per communication by increasing the number of connections with a minimal loss in quality.    This conclusion could not have been derived without the combined usage of perceptual and network QoS metrics, which have been able to unveil the economic potential of perceptually protected streams.    The proposed concepts are finally tested in a real environment where a proof-of-concept implementation of the MAAL has shown a behavior close to the simulated results therefore validating the proposed multimedia protocol layers
