    Sampling from a system-theoretic viewpoint: Part II - Noncausal solutions

    This paper puts to use concepts and tools introduced in Part I to address a wide spectrum of noncausal sampling and reconstruction problems. Particularly, we follow the system-theoretic paradigm by using systems as signal generators to account for available information and system norms (L2 and L∞) as performance measures. The proposed optimization-based approach recovers many known solutions, derived hitherto by different methods, as special cases under different assumptions about acquisition or reconstructing devices (e.g., polynomial and exponential cardinal splines for fixed samplers and the Sampling Theorem and its modifications in the case when both sampler and interpolator are design parameters). We also derive new results, such as versions of the Sampling Theorem for downsampling and reconstruction from noisy measurements, the continuous-time invariance of a wide class of optimal sampling-and-reconstruction circuits, etcetera

    Multirate sampled-data yaw-damper and modal suppression system design

    A multirate control law synthesized algorithm based on an infinite-time quadratic cost function, was developed along with a method for analyzing the robustness of multirate systems. A generalized multirate sampled-data control law structure (GMCLS) was introduced. A new infinite-time-based parameter optimization multirate sampled-data control law synthesis method and solution algorithm were developed. A singular-value-based method for determining gain and phase margins for multirate systems was also developed. The finite-time-based parameter optimization multirate sampled-data control law synthesis algorithm originally intended to be applied to the aircraft problem was instead demonstrated by application to a simpler problem involving the control of the tip position of a two-link robot arm. The GMCLS, the infinite-time-based parameter optimization multirate control law synthesis method and solution algorithm, and the singular-value based method for determining gain and phase margins were all demonstrated by application to the aircraft control problem originally proposed for this project

    Sampling from a system-theoretic viewpoint

    This paper studies a system-theoretic approach to the problem of reconstructing an analog signal from its samples. The idea, borrowed from earlier treatments in the control literature, is to address the problem as a hybrid model-matching problem in which performance is measured by system norms. \ud \ud The paper is split into three parts. In Part I we present the paradigm and revise the lifting technique, which is our main technical tool. In Part II optimal samplers and holds are designed for various analog signal reconstruction problems. In some cases one component is fixed while the remaining are designed, in other cases all three components are designed simultaneously. No causality requirements are imposed in Part II, which allows to use frequency domain arguments, in particular the lifted frequency response as introduced in Part I. In Part III the main emphasis is placed on a systematic incorporation of causality constraints into the optimal design of reconstructors. We consider reconstruction problems, in which the sampling (acquisition) device is given and the performance is measured by the L2L^2-norm of the reconstruction error. The problem is solved under the constraint that the optimal reconstructor is ll-causal for a given l0,l\geq 0, i.e., that its impulse response is zero in the time interval (,lh),(-\infty,-l h), where hh is the sampling period. We derive a closed-form state-space solution of the problem, which is based on the spectral factorization of a rational transfer function

    Pole Assignment With Improved Control Performance by Means of Periodic Feedback

    This technical note is concerned with the pole placement of continuous-time linear time-invariant (LTI) systems by means of LQ suboptimal periodic feedback. It is well-known that there exist infinitely many generalized sampled-data hold functions (GSHF) for any controllable LTI system to place the modes of its discrete-time equivalent model at prescribed locations. Among all such GSHFs, this technical note aims to find the one which also minimizes a given LQ performance index. To this end, the GSHF being sought is written as the sum of a particular GSHF and a homogeneous one. The particular GSHF can be readily obtained using the conventional pole-placement techniques. The homogeneous GSHF, on the other hand, is expressed as a linear combination of a finite number of functions such as polynomials, sinusoidals, etc. The problem of finding the optimal coefficients of this linear combination is then formulated as a linear matrix inequality (LMI) optimization. The procedure is illustrated by a numerical example

    A Perturbation Scheme for Passivity Verification and Enforcement of Parameterized Macromodels

    This paper presents an algorithm for checking and enforcing passivity of behavioral reduced-order macromodels of LTI systems, whose frequency-domain (scattering) responses depend on external parameters. Such models, which are typically extracted from sampled input-output responses obtained from numerical solution of first-principle physical models, usually expressed as Partial Differential Equations, prove extremely useful in design flows, since they allow optimization, what-if or sensitivity analyses, and design centering. Starting from an implicit parameterization of both poles and residues of the model, as resulting from well-known model identification schemes based on the Generalized Sanathanan-Koerner iteration, we construct a parameter-dependent Skew-Hamiltonian/Hamiltonian matrix pencil. The iterative extraction of purely imaginary eigenvalues ot fhe pencil, combined with an adaptive sampling scheme in the parameter space, is able to identify all regions in the frequency-parameter plane where local passivity violations occur. Then, a singular value perturbation scheme is setup to iteratively correct the model coefficients, until all local passivity violations are eliminated. The final result is a corrected model, which is uniformly passive throughout the parameter range.     A Unifying Framework for Finite Wordlength Realizations.

    A general framework for the analysis of the finite wordlength (FWL) effects of linear time-invariant digital filter implementations is proposed. By means of a special implicit system description, all realization forms can be described. An algebraic characterization of the equivalent classes is provided, which enables a search for realizations that minimize the FWL effects to be made. Two suitable FWL coefficient sensitivity measures are proposed for use within the framework, these being a transfer function sensitivity measure and a pole sensitivity measure. An illustrative example is presented

    Delay-Based Controller Design for Continuous-Time and Hybrid Applications

    Motivated by the availability of different types of delays in embedded systems and biological circuits, the objective of this work is to study the benefits that delay can provide in simplifying the implementation of controllers for continuous-time systems. Given a continuous-time linear time-invariant (LTI) controller, we propose three methods to approximate this controller arbitrarily precisely by a simple controller composed of delay blocks, a few integrators and possibly a unity feedback. Different problems associated with the approximation procedures, such as finding the optimal number of delay blocks or studying the robustness of the designed controller with respect to delay values, are then investigated. We also study the design of an LTI continuous-time controller satisfying given control objectives whose delay-based implementation needs the least number of delay blocks. A direct application of this work is in the sampled-data control of a real-time embedded system, where the sampling frequency is relatively high and/or the output of the system is sampled irregularly. Based on our results on delay-based controller design, we propose a digital-control scheme that can implement every continuous-time stabilizing (LTI) controller. Unlike a typical sampled-data controller, the hybrid controller introduced here -— consisting of an ideal sampler, a digital controller, a number of modified second-order holds and possibly a unity feedback -— is robust to sampling jitter and can operate at arbitrarily high sampling frequencies without requiring expensive, high-precision computation

A lifted frequency domain approach is used to obtain the existence conditions and the optimal sampler. A state space formulation of the results is also provided. The resulting optimal relaxed causal sampler is a cascade of a linear continuous time system followed by a generalized sampler and a discrete system
