    The impact of business process outsourcing on firm performance and the influence of governance : a long term study in the German banking industry

    Does BPO pay off at the firm-level? Although there are several studies which analyze the potential benefits of BPO, there is a virtual absence of research papers on BPO outcomes. Based on an analysis of 137 Business process outsourcing (BPO) ventures at 254 German banks in a period between 1994 and 2005, we found that the outsourcer's financial performance in terms of profitability and cost efficiency was increased significantly compared to industry peers without BPO. The increase stems not from workforce reductions but rather from increased employee productivity. Further, we show how BPO governance ensures BPO success: individually negotiated outsourcing contracts help to improve cost efficiency and profitability measures. Relational governance based on trust has only positive effects on profitability.     The offshore services value chain : developing countries and the crisis

    This paper analyzes the recent evolution and impact of the global economic crisis on the offshore services industry. Using a global value chains framework, the authors classify the offshore services sector in a comprehensive set of general and industry-specific activities that correspond to different segments and stages in the value-adding process for services. Through an analysis of the impact of the economic crisis on the industry, a small decline in demand was found; however this did not cause any structural changes in the market. The crisis has created two opposing effects: general contraction of demand by existing customers due to the recession; and, at the same time, a substitution effect by which new services are being moved from developed countries to emerging economies in search of cost reduction. The paper concludes that the offshore services industry will continue to offer growth opportunities for developing countries not only among existing market players, but also a range of new countries.     A reformation model of compliance to improve the property tax revenue generation in Malaysian local governments

    This study is aimed at proposing an extension on Fisher’s model of compliance behavior based on empirical findings on property tax revenue generated in Malaysian local government. Adequate delivery of facilities and services alongside community engagement can significantly influence property tax revenue generation. The methodology adopted is a quantitative approach. Questionnaires are administered to about 300 respondents (taxpayers). The findings reveal that poor provision of facilities and services combined with lack of community engagement in local government delivery process results in poor property tax revenue generation. The negative effect is as a result of non compliance in property tax which increases proportionally with inadequate provisions of facilities and services within the local government set-up. This established the fact that in order to improve compliance behavior there is absolute need for adequate delivery of facilities and services alongside community engagement. This requires the need for an extension of the existing Fisher’s Model of compliance behavior which is applicable within the context of the case study area. Therefore, an extension of Fisher’s Model of compliance proposed is based on these requirements. The proposed model can assist the local governments in dealing with issues associated with noncompliance. Sufficient provision of facilities and services in conjunction with community engagement will motivate the taxpayers to settle their tax obligations. This will certainly encourage community development and improve property tax revenue generated.     Foreign Direct Investments in Business Services: Transforming the Visegrád Four Region into a Knowledge-based Economy?

    Foreign direct investments (FDIs) in the service sector are widely attributed an important role in bringing more skill-intensive activities into the Visegrad Four (V4). This region—comprising Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia—relied heavily on FDIs in manufacturing, which was often found to generate activities with limited skill content. This contribution deconstructs the chaotic concept of “business services” by analysing the actual nature of service sector activities outsourced and offshored to the V4. Using the knowledge-based economy (KBE) as a benchmark, the paper assesses the potential of service sector outsourcing in contributing to regional competitiveness by increasing the innovative capacity. It also discusses the role of state policies towards service sector FDI (SFDI). The analysis combines data obtained from case studies undertaken in service sector outsourcing projects in V4 countries. Moreover, it draws on interviews with senior employees of investment promotion agencies and publicly available data and statistics on activities within the service sector in the region. It argues that the recent inward investments in business services in the V4 mainly utilize existing local human capital resources, and their contribution to the development of the KBE is limited to employment creation and demand for skilled labour

There is an increasing number of organizations that are taking advantage of digital transformation, competing in the market of the digital economy. The advances of the global market in competitiveness trigger organizations whose ambition is to distinguish themselves to develop more efficient and effective processes, delivering distinctive services or products to their consumers. When the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) processes are automated with Robot Process Automated (RPA), the organization can raise cost efficiency, acquire efficiency advantages, and increase their rank in the market. Additionally, when repetitive and tedious activities are automated, human employees have time and opportunity to enhance their cognitive judgment, creative thinking, and social skills. This research approaches the steps that lead to the elaboration of a framework that can be adopted in BPO processes, aiming to help in the knowledge of which processes are typical in BPO, and which of those processes can be fully automated, semi-automated or cannot be automated with Robotic Processing Outsourcing. Afterwards, are revealed the assumptions that were the base of the artifact elaboration, following the description of each component and stage that constitute the framework. Lastly, it is referred the validation of the framework by experts and the discussion of the obtained results, conclude the utility of the artifact as support to the automation of BPO with RPA
