    E-learning as a Vehicle for Knowledge Management

    Nowadays, companies want to learn from their own experiences and to be able to enhance that experience with best principles and lessons learned from other companies. Companies emphasise the importance of knowledge management, particularly the relationship between knowledge and learning within an organisation. We feel that an e-learning environment may contribute to knowledge management on the one hand and to the learning need in companies on the other hand. In this paper, we report on the challenges in designing and implementing an e-learning environment. We identify the properties from a pedagogical view that should be supported by an e-learning environment. Then, we discuss the challenges in developing a system that includes these properties

    The advent of e-learning has made unlimited source of knowledge available to us all. Recent research reveals great interest to introduce Knowledge Management (KM) ideas to e-Learning systems. It is argued that KM can facilitate an eLearning system. The joint studies of KM and eLearning point out the same fundamental goal: facilitating organizational learning. Researchers try to analyze the similarity of the goals, methods of assessment, and some knowledge sharing processes both in KM and eLearning. An eLearning system within KM is traditionally analyzed as a knowledge resource repository, where the KM methods can be implemented to increase the effectiveness of knowledge dissemination. Researchers have designed many models for integrating knowledge management into e-learning system. Some are practically implemented while some are not practically implemented. Despite these various models, researchers are still working for more interactive, efficiency and effective model that can be used to quickly identify the most relevant information (knowledge) and distribute it to meet specific needs.     SWA-KMDLS: An Enhanced e-Learning Management System Using Semantic Web and Knowledge Management Technology

    In this era of knowledge economy in which knowledge have become the most precious resource, surveys have shown that e-Learning has been on the increasing trend in various organizations including, among others, education and corporate. The use of e-Learning is not only aim to acquire knowledge but also to maintain competitiveness and advantages for individuals or organizations. However, the early promise of e-Learning has yet to be fully realized, as it has been no more than a handout being published online, coupled with simple multiple-choice quizzes. The emerging of e-Learning 2.0 that is empowered by Web 2.0 technology still hardly overcome common problem such as information overload and poor content aggregation in a highly increasing number of learning objects in an e-Learning Management System (LMS) environment. The aim of this research study is to exploit the Semantic Web (SW) and Knowledge Management (KM) technology; the two emerging and promising technology to enhance the existing LMS. The proposed system is named as Semantic Web Aware-Knowledge Management Driven e-Learning System (SWA-KMDLS). An Ontology approach that is the backbone of SW and KM is introduced for managing knowledge especially from learning object and developing automated question answering system (Aquas) with expert locator in SWA-KMDLS. The METHONTOLOGY methodology is selected to develop the Ontology in this research work. The potential of SW and KM technology is identified in this research finding which will benefit e-Learning developer to develop e-Learning system especially with social constructivist pedagogical approach from the point of view of KM framework and SW environment. The (semi-) automatic ontological knowledge base construction system (SAOKBCS) has contributed to knowledge extraction from learning object semiautomatically whilst the Aquas with expert locator has facilitated knowledge retrieval that encourages knowledge sharing in e-Learning environment. The experiment conducted has shown that the SAOKBCS can extract concept that is the main component of Ontology from text learning object with precision of 86.67%, thus saving the expert time and effort to build Ontology manually. Additionally the experiment on Aquas has shown that more than 80% of users are satisfied with answers provided by the system. The expert locator framework can also improve the performance of Aquas in the future usage.     The effect of using facebook markup language (fbml) for designing an e-learning model in higher education

    This study examines the use of Facebook Markup Language (FBML) to design an e-learning model to facilitate teaching and learning in an academic setting. The qualitative research study presents a case study on how, Facebook is used to support collaborative activities in higher education. We used FBML to design an e-learning model called processes for e-learning resources in the Specialist Learning Resources Diploma (SLRD) program. Two groups drawn from the SLRD program were used; First were the participants in the treatment group and second in the control group. Statistical analysis in the form of a t-test was used to compare the dependent variables between the two groups. The findings show a difference in the mean score between the pre-test and the post-test for the treatment group (achievement, the skill, trends). Our findings suggest that the use of FBML can support collaborative knowledge creation and improved the academic achievement of participatns.     Investigating Mutual Adaptation Process between Users and E-Learning System: A Knowledge Access Efficiency Approach

    For its advantages in being able to provide rapid and comprehensive access to knowledge, e-learning system has been widely adopted in education to improve learning processes. However, such IT-mediated processes involving both users and system are subject to changes. There exists adjustment in browsing behavior on user side and web structure refinement on system side. It would impose uncertainty and influence on learning quality and thus create a strong need for rapid adaptation between users and the e-learning system. Focusing upon knowledge organization in terms of web structure management, this study intends to find out an effective way to speed up the adaptation process. It consists of two stages. In the first stage, we would like to study the general adapting behaviors of e-learners, and analyze how they are affected by the web structure. Through analytical modeling, Knowledge Access Efficiency (KAE), which is capable of reflecting the quality of adaptation, is conceptualized mathematically. In the second stage, the dynamics of KAE during the whole adaptation process will be carefully investigated. It is hoped that this study can give us useful clues regarding knowledge organization of e-learning system, and by improving web structure management it can elicit better performance of elearners
