IMPACT: Investigation of Mobile-user Patterns Across University Campuses using WLAN Trace Analysis
We conduct the most comprehensive study of WLAN traces to date. Measurements
collected from four major university campuses are analyzed with the aim of
developing fundamental understanding of realistic user behavior in wireless
networks. Both individual user and inter-node (group) behaviors are
investigated and two classes of metrics are devised to capture the underlying
structure of such behaviors.
For individual user behavior we observe distinct patterns in which most users
are 'on' for a small fraction of the time, the number of access points visited
is very small and the overall on-line user mobility is quite low. We clearly
identify categories of heavy and light users. In general, users exhibit high
degree of similarity over days and weeks.
For group behavior, we define metrics for encounter patterns and friendship.
Surprisingly, we find that a user, on average, encounters less than 6% of the
network user population within a month, and that encounter and friendship
relations are highly asymmetric. We establish that number of encounters follows
a biPareto distribution, while friendship indexes follow an exponential
distribution. We capture the encounter graph using a small world model, the
characteristics of which reach steady state after only one day.
We hope for our study to have a great impact on realistic modeling of network
usage and mobility patterns in wireless networks.Comment: 16 pages, 31 figure
ENHANCING USERSâ EXPERIENCE WITH SMART MOBILE TECHNOLOGY
The aim of this thesis is to investigate mobile guides for use with smartphones. Mobile guides have been successfully used to provide information, personalisation and navigation for the user. The researcher also wanted to ascertain how and in what ways mobile guides can enhance users' experience.
This research involved designing and developing web based applications to run on smartphones. Four studies were conducted, two of which involved testing of the particular application. The applications tested were a museum mobile guide application and a university mobile guide mapping application. Initial testing examined the prototype work for the âChronology of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiahâ application. The results were used to assess the potential of using similar mobile guides in Brunei Darussalamâs museums. The second study involved testing of the âKent LiveMapâ application for use at the University of Kent. Students at the university tested this mapping application, which uses crowdsourcing of information to provide live data. The results were promising and indicate that users' experience was enhanced when using the application.
Overall results from testing and using the two applications that were developed as part of this thesis show that mobile guides have the potential to be implemented in Brunei Darussalamâs museums and on campus at the University of Kent. However, modifications to both applications are required to fulfil their potential and take them beyond the prototype stage in order to be fully functioning and commercially viable
Identifying Geographic Clusters: A Network Analytic Approach
In recent years there has been a growing interest in the role of networks and
clusters in the global economy. Despite being a popular research topic in
economics, sociology and urban studies, geographical clustering of human
activity has often studied been by means of predetermined geographical units
such as administrative divisions and metropolitan areas. This approach is
intrinsically time invariant and it does not allow one to differentiate between
different activities. Our goal in this paper is to present a new methodology
for identifying clusters, that can be applied to different empirical settings.
We use a graph approach based on k-shell decomposition to analyze world
biomedical research clusters based on PubMed scientific publications. We
identify research institutions and locate their activities in geographical
clusters. Leading areas of scientific production and their top performing
research institutions are consistently identified at different geographic
scales

Amor y Apoyo: Lecciones de Latinx Families in Nourishing Resilience to First and Second-Generation College Students
The present qualitative study aims to understand how Latino/Hispanic herea er referred to as Latinx, parent involvement is different or similar among first- and second-generation college students in how they experience higher education and how parental education impacts the use of student support services. Hence, supporting Latinx student retention by developing university and parental relationships. Second-generation college students and Latinx parents were unable to be included in the study because of their scarcity or hesitation of participating. Therefore, participants included a convenience sample of six first-generation undergraduate students from a 4-year institution. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to obtain their stories of parental involvement and student involvement. Results suggest that (1) first-generation college students experience a hands-off involvement from parents, however, they enjoyed the freedom this brought, (2) Latinx parents might have a misunderstanding of college student identity, and (3) students expressed a desire to have their parents learn about and understand mental health. Implications of findings include universities creating more resources to support Latinx studentsâ mental health, as well as earlier school outreach for Latinx parent involvement to better inform them about the college lifestyle
