With the introduction of Arkansas Computer Science Standards in the elementary classroom, many teachers wonder how to satisfy these and to do so without full knowledge of computer science and alongside all the other demands they must meet in the classroom. This paper covers my interest in computer science and why it is needed in elementary schools, specifically in Arkansas. It also incorporates the standards, including a chart of all the standards with suggestions about how they can be taught, followed by some full lesson plans written during my research

    The examination and research of how liquids and gases behave in very low gravity will improve our understanding of the behavior of fluids on Earth. The knowledge of multiphase fluid behavior is applicable to many industries on Earth, including the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, chemical, and nuclear industries, just to name a few. In addition, this valuable knowledge applies very well to the engineering and design of microgravity materials processing and of life-support systems for extended space flight. Professors Ashok Sangani of Syracuse University and Donald Koch of Cornell University are principal investigators in the Microgravity Fluid Physics Program, which is managed and sponsored by the NASA Glenn Research Center. Their flight experiment entitled "Microgravity Observations of Bubble Interactions" (MOBI) is planned for operation in the Fluids and Combustion Facility aboard the International Space Station

    Creating a Canadian profession: the nuclear engineer, c. 1940-1968

    Canada, as one of the three Allied nations collaborating on atomic energy development during the Second World War, had an early start in applying its new knowledge and defining a new profession. Owing to postwar secrecy and distinct national aims for the field, nuclear engineering was shaped uniquely by the Canadian context. Alone among the postwar powers, Canadian exploration of atomic energy eschewed military applications; the occupation emerged within a governmental monopoly; the intellectual content of the discipline was influenced by its early practitioners, administrators, scarce resources, and university niches; and a self-recognized profession coalesced later than did its American and British counterparts. This paper argues that the history of the emergence of Canadian nuclear engineers exemplifies unusually strong shaping of technical expertise by political and cultural context

    European Master in Nuclear Energy (EMINE). When academy and industry meet

    EMINE master programme is an international education initiative offered by KIC-InnoEnergy under the framework of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). Students in the programme have the opportunity to acquire an in-depth knowledge of the nuclear industry, through unique and specialised courses covering a wide range of subjects. Students choose between UPC (Barcelona) and KTH (Stockholm) for the first year and between Grenoble-INP and Paris-Saclay University (France) for the second year. Grenoble École de Management (GEM) completes the list of academic partners: students take a 3-week summer course on energy management issues after their first year in EMINE. EMINE students also benefit from the involvement of our industrial partners (AREVA, EDF, ENDESA, INSTN-CEA, and Vattenfall) in the Programme. For the academic institutions, EMINE is the opportunity to provide a high level education aligned with the industrial needs. The international collaboration among universities helps improving the quality and the adoption of best practices. EMINE attracts good students to our centres whereas the EIT funding and the industrial involvement allows a number of activities that otherwise would have been difficult to carry out, such as the assistance of external industrial experts or field activities. MSc EMINE helps tomorrow’s nuclear engineers take up the challenges the nuclear energy industry faces in terms of safety, social acceptability and waste management.     BaBar - A Community Web Site in an Organizational Setting

    The BABAR Web site was established in 1993 at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) to support the BABAR experiment, to report its results, and to facilitate communication among its scientific and engineering collaborators, currently numbering about 600 individuals from 75 collaborating institutions in 10 countries. The BABAR Web site is, therefore, a community Web site. At the same time it is hosted at SLAC and funded by agencies that demand adherence to policies decided under different priorities. Additionally, the BABAR Web administrators deal with the problems that arise during the course of managing users, content, policies, standards, and changing technologies. Desired solutions to some of these problems may be incompatible with the overall administration of the SLAC Web sites and/or the SLAC policies and concerns. There are thus different perspectives of the same Web site and differing expectations in segments of the SLAC population which act as constraints and challenges in any review or re-engineering activities. Web Engineering, which post-dates the BABAR Web, has aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of Web development. This paper reports on the first part of a recent review of application of Web Engineering methods to the BABAR Web site, which has led to explicit user and information models of the BABAR community and how SLAC and the BABAR community relate and react to each other.     The Research Space: using the career paths of scholars to predict the evolution of the research output of individuals, institutions, and nations

    In recent years scholars have built maps of science by connecting the academic fields that cite each other, are cited together, or that cite a similar literature. But since scholars cannot always publish in the fields they cite, or that cite them, these science maps are only rough proxies for the potential of a scholar, organization, or country, to enter a new academic field. Here we use a large dataset of scholarly publications disambiguated at the individual level to create a map of science-or research space-where links connect pairs of fields based on the probability that an individual has published in both of them. We find that the research space is a significantly more accurate predictor of the fields that individuals and organizations will enter in the future than citation based science maps. At the country level, however, the research space and citations based science maps are equally accurate. These findings show that data on career trajectories-the set of fields that individuals have previously published in-provide more accurate predictors of future research output for more focalized units-such as individuals or organizations-than citation based science maps

    Methodology for measuring photonuclear reaction cross sections with an electron accelerator based on Bayesian analysis

    Accurate measurements of photonuclear reaction cross sections are crucial for a number of applications, including radiation shielding design, absorbed dose calculations, reactor physics and engineering, nuclear safeguard and inspection, astrophysics, and nuclear medicine. Primarily motivated by the study of the production of selected radionuclides with high-energy photon beams (mainly 225Ac, 47Sc, and 67Cu), we have established a methodology for the measurement of photonuclear reaction cross sections with the microtron accelerator available at the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS). The proposed methodology is based on the measurement of the produced activity with a High Purity Germanium (HPGe) spectrometer and on the knowledge of the photon fluence spectrum through Monte Carlo simulations. The data analysis is performed by applying a Bayesian fitting procedure to the experimental data and by assuming a functional trend of the cross section, in our case a Breit-Wigner function. We validated the entire methodology by measuring a well-established photonuclear cross section, namely the 197Au({\gamma},n)196Au reaction. The results are consistent with those reported in the literature
