    Knowledge discovery for moderating collaborative projects

    In today's global market environment, enterprises are increasingly turning towards collaboration in projects to leverage their resources, skills and expertise, and simultaneously address the challenges posed in diverse and competitive markets. Moderators, which are knowledge based systems have successfully been used to support collaborative teams by raising awareness of problems or conflicts. However, the functioning of a moderator is limited to the knowledge it has about the team members. Knowledge acquisition, learning and updating of knowledge are the major challenges for a Moderator's implementation. To address these challenges a Knowledge discOvery And daTa minINg inteGrated (KOATING) framework is presented for Moderators to enable them to continuously learn from the operational databases of the company and semi-automatically update the corresponding expert module. The architecture for the Universal Knowledge Moderator (UKM) shows how the existing moderators can be extended to support global manufacturing. A method for designing and developing the knowledge acquisition module of the Moderator for manual and semi-automatic update of knowledge is documented using the Unified Modelling Language (UML). UML has been used to explore the static structure and dynamic behaviour, and describe the system analysis, system design and system development aspects of the proposed KOATING framework. The proof of design has been presented using a case study for a collaborative project in the form of construction project supply chain. It has been shown that Moderators can "learn" by extracting various kinds of knowledge from Post Project Reports (PPRs) using different types of text mining techniques. Furthermore, it also proposed that the knowledge discovery integrated moderators can be used to support and enhance collaboration by identifying appropriate business opportunities and identifying corresponding partners for creation of a virtual organization. A case study is presented in the context of a UK based SME. Finally, this thesis concludes by summarizing the thesis, outlining its novelties and contributions, and recommending future research

    A study of the methodologies currently available for the maintenance of the knowledge-base in an expert system

    This research studies currently available maintenance methodologies for expert system knowledge bases and taxonomically classifies them according to the functions they perform. The classification falls into two broad categories. These are: (1) Methodologies for building a more maintainable expert system knowledge base. This section covers techniques applicable to the development phases. Software engineering approaches as well as other approaches are discussed. (2) Methodologies for maintaining an existing knowledge base. This section is concerned with the continued maintenance of an existing knowledge base. It is divided into three subsections. The first subsection discusses tools and techniques which aid the understanding of a knowledge base. The second looks at tools which facilitate the actual modification of the knowledge base, while the last secttion examines tools used for the verification or validation of the knowledge base. Every main methodology or tool selected for this study is analysed according to the function it was designed to perform (or its objective); the concept or principles behind the tool or methodology: and its implementation details. This is followed by a general comment at the end of the analysis. Although expert systems as a rule contain significant amount of information related to the user interface, database interface, integration with conventional software for numerical calculations, integration with other knowledge bases through black boarding systems or network interactions, this research is confined to the maintenance of the knowledge base only and does not address the maintenance of these interfaces. Also not included in this thesis are Truth Maintenance Systems. While a Truth Maintenance System (TMS) automatically updates a knowledge base during execution time, these update operations are not considered \u27maintenance\u27 in the sense as used in this thesis. Maintenance in the context of this thesis refers to perfective, adaptive, and corrective maintenance (see introduction to chapter 4). TMS on the other hand refers to a collection of techniques for doing belief revision (Martin, 1990) . That is, a TMS maintains a set of beliefs or facts in the knowledge base to ensure that they remain consistent during execution time. From this perspective, TMS is not regarded as a knowledge base maintenance tool for the purpose of this study

    Digitisation of manual composite layup task knowledge using gaming technology

    Increased market demand for composite products and shortage of expert laminators is compelling the composite industry to explore ways to acquire layup skills from experts and transfer them to novices and eventually to machines. There is a lack of holistic methods in literature for capturing composite layup skills especially involving complex moulds. This research aims to develop an informatics-based method, enabled by consumer-grade gaming technology and machine learning, to capture and digitise manufacturing task knowledge from skill-intensive hand layup. The digitisation is underpinned by the proposed human-workpiece interaction theory and implemented to automatically extract and decode key knowledge constituents such as layup strategies, ply manipulation techniques, motion mechanics and problem-solving during hand layup, collectively categorised as layup skills. The significance of this research is its potential to facilitate cost-effective transfer of skills from experts to novices, real-time automated supervision of hand layup and automation of layup tasks in the future

The main focus of this study is in success factors of KM having in consideration that Small and Medium Enterprises (hereinafter: SMEs) have fewer resources and opportunities, both human and financial (Farvaque & Voss, 2009). This research is about the main factors of KM that plays a successful role in SMEs in the United Arab Emirates (hereinafter: UAE), Qatar & Pakistan. SMEs in the manufacturing and services sector have taken under study to evaluate the success factors of KM implementation.     Defining and validating a multimodel approach for product architecture derivation and improvement

In software product line (SPL) development, it is crucial to identify whether the NFRs for a specific product can be attained with the built-in architectural variation mechanisms of the product line architecture, or whether additional architectural transformations are required. This paper presents a multimodel approach for quality-driven product architecture derivation and improvement (QuaDAI). A controlled experiment is also presented with the objective of comparing the effectiveness, efficiency, perceived ease of use, intention to use and perceived usefulness with regard to participants using QuaDAI as opposed to the Architecture Tradeoff Analysis Method (ATAM). The results show that QuaDAI is more efficient and perceived as easier to use than ATAM, from the perspective of novice software architecture evaluators. However, the other variables were not found to be statistically significant.
