    Knowing Values and Public Inspection

    Get PDF
We present a basic dynamic epistemic logic of "knowing the value". Analogous to public announcement in standard DEL, we study "public inspection", a new dynamic operator which updates the agents' knowledge about the values of constants. We provide a sound and strongly complete axiomatization for the single and multi-agent case, making use of the well-known Armstrong axioms for dependencies in databases

Research on the effectiveness of panoramic room walls has been carried out in the Radiology Installation of Prof. Dr. MA Hanafiah SM Batusangkar. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the panoramic room walls in absorbing radiation emitted by panoramic aircraft, as well as knowing the safety level of the room around the panoramic inspection room in accordance with the dose limit values of workers and the general public. This type of research is a quantitative research by taking direct measurements. The research was conducted by measuring the radiation dose at six points of the panoramic room wall using a radiation measuring instrument, namely TLD-100. The results showed that the effectiveness of the walls was only able to absorb radiation less than 90%, with the shield category on the walls that was not good enough to withstand radiation. Therefore, it is necessary to renovate the panoramic room walls in accordance with safety standards

Maple Syrup Value Systems and Value Chains - Considering Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal Perspectives

    Get PDF
Harvested from both intensive sugar maple stands and diverse mixed forest ecosystems across Ontario, maple syrup is an important rural and Aboriginal non-timber forest product that contributes to social, economic and environmental sustainability. This paper presents our ongoing work to map Ontario’s maple syrup value system from two different perspectives, Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal. In the economic sense, analyses of value systems are useful for members to identify the opportunities and challenges they are facing to advance industry growth and innovation. In the social and environmental sense, these analyses provide a window into how different worldviews and belief systems can lead to more effective and sustainable maple production. A value system is the inter-connected network of firms and activities that comprise an industry from the supplier to the consumer that is focused on quality and efficiency rather than costs. In this project, we pushed the boundaries of the traditional business approach, to incorporate sustainable development thinking and re-imagine the mapping according to Aboriginal ways of knowing. We undertook thirty four interviews representing Aboriginal and rural industry members and other key informants. We compare and contrast the rural and Aboriginal models of the value systems and conclude by providing insights useful for community forestry operations

Re-Inventing Public Education:The New Role of Knowledge in Education Policy-Making

    Get PDF
This article focuses on the changing role of knowledge in education policy making within the knowledge society. Through an examination of key policy texts, the Scottish case of Integrated Children Services provision is used to exemplify this new trend. We discuss the ways in which knowledge is being used in order to re-configure education as part of a range of public services designed to meet individuals' needs. This, we argue, has led to a 'scientization' of education governance where it is only knowledge, closely intertwined with action (expressed as 'measures') that can reveal problems and shape solutions. The article concludes by highlighting the key role of knowledge policy and governance in orienting education policy making through a re-invention of the public role of education

A critical approach to global citizenship in initial teacher training in the UK

This paper compares the evidence and robustness of a critical approach to global citizenship in the English Initial Teacher Training (ITT) sector of school-based training with that of Higher Education-based training. In recent years there has been a shift in market from mainly Higher Education provision to equal allocation of provision between school-based and Higher Education-based providers. It is core to the arguments in this paper that the impact to ITT provided via a Higher Education Institution (HEI) is likely, by virtue of their global recruitment of students, to take a critical approach to global citizenship to ensure that their international reputations are not only maintained, but enhanced. It is also likely that this will reflect in the content of the university-based courses. Additional to this is that the HEI ITT awards are made at Masters level, which school-based training is unable to offer. The paper examines the contrasts between the local paradigm for school-based training and the national and international paradigm of the HEI route. The comparison will further identify underlying issues of the pathways, which may impact on preconceptions of students entering Higher Education in particular and as such assist in informing policy approaches to developing a critical approach to global citizenship both by HEIs and of students

KISS: Stochastic Packet Inspection Classifier for UDP Traffic

    Get PDF
This paper proposes KISS, a novel Internet classifica- tion engine. Motivated by the expected raise of UDP traffic, which stems from the momentum of Peer-to-Peer (P2P) streaming appli- cations, we propose a novel classification framework that leverages on statistical characterization of payload. Statistical signatures are derived by the means of a Chi-Square-like test, which extracts the protocol "format," but ignores the protocol "semantic" and "synchronization" rules. The signatures feed a decision process based either on the geometric distance among samples, or on Sup- port Vector Machines. KISS is very accurate, and its signatures are intrinsically robust to packet sampling, reordering, and flow asym- metry, so that it can be used on almost any network. KISS is tested in different scenarios, considering traditional client-server proto- cols, VoIP, and both traditional and new P2P Internet applications. Results are astonishing. The average True Positive percentage is 99.6%, with the worst case equal to 98.1,% while results are al- most perfect when dealing with new P2P streaming applications

Fourth Amendment Accommodations: (UN)Compelling Public Needs, Balancing Acts, and the Fiction of Consent

    Get PDF
The problems of public housing-including crime, drugs, and gun violence- have received an enormous amount of national attention. Much attention has also focused on warrantless searches and consent searches as solutions to these problems. This Note addresses the constitutionality of these proposals and asserts that if the Supreme Court\u27s current Fourth Amendment jurisprudence is taken to its logical extremes, warrantless searches in public housing can be found constitutional. The author argues, however, that such an interpretation fails to strike the proper balance between public need and privacy in the public housing context. The Note concludes by proposing alternative consent-based regimes that would pass constitutional muster

Acting together: ensemble as a democratic process in art and life

Traditionally drama in schools has been seen either as a learning medium with a wide range of curricular uses or as a subject in its own right. This paper argues that the importance of drama in schools is in the processes of social and artistic engagement and experiencing of drama rather than in its outcomes. The paper contrasts the pro-social emphasis in the ensemble model of drama with the pro-technical and limited range of learning in subject-based approaches which foreground technical knowledge of periods, plays, styles and genres. The ensemble-based approach is positioned in the context of professional theatre understandings of ensemble artistry and in the context of revolutionary shifts from the pro-technical to the pro-social in educational and cultural policy making in England. Using ideas drawn from McGrath and Castoriadis, the paper claims that the ensemble approach provides young people with a model of democratic living
