thesisThe need for precise micro/nano-positioning has arisen in many fields of research and technology. Piezoelectric stick-slip actuators are widely used where precise positioning over a wide range of motion is required. Controlling manipulators that utilize piezoelectric stick-slip actuators is not a trivial task, as these actuators have a discrete stepping nature, with a step size that is influenced by a variety of factors such as actuator loading, temperature, and humidity. Absence of integrated joint sensors in manipulators that use piezoelectric stick-slip actuators (which is typical), as well as difficulty in using vision feedback for closed-loop control, has led to development of open-loop modeling methods to estimate the step size of the actuators. Prior work has failed to characterize and quantify the effects of various parameters on the displacement of such actuators to a degree as to be easily utilized in the control of an actual manipulator. In this thesis, we propose an empirically derived predictive open-loop model for the step size of the prismatic and rotary piezoelectric-stick-slip-actuated joints of a Kleindiek MM3A micromanipulator, based on static and inertial loads due to the mass of the manipulator's links as well as loads applied to the end-effector. The effects of various parameters on the step size of each joint are quantified and characterized. The results obtained are then fit into a model based on nonlinear regression via joint-specific parameters. Calibration routines are developed to quickly determine the joint-specific parameters for use in the derived predictive step-size model. Using the model obtained, we can predict the step size with an accuracy of 20% (100 nm) for the prismatic joint of the manipulator, and 2% (1 ^rad) for the rotary joints of the manipulator

This review summarizes recent advances in the area of tribology based on the outcome of a Lorentz Center workshop surveying various physical, chemical and mechanical phenomena across scales. Among the main themes discussed were those of rough surface representations, the breakdown of continuum theories at the nano- and micro-scales, as well as multiscale and multiphysics aspects for analytical and computational models relevant to applications spanning a variety of sectors, from automotive to biotribology and nanotechnology. Significant effort is still required to account for complementary nonlinear effects of plasticity, adhesion, friction, wear, lubrication and surface chemistry in tribological models. For each topic, we propose some research directions

Piezoelectric stick-slip actuators with high precision, large actuating force, and high displacement resolution are currently widely used in the field of high-precision micro-nano processing and manufacturing. However, the non-negligible, non-linear factors and complexity of their characteristics make its modeling and control quite difficult and affect the positioning accuracy and stability of the system. To obtain higher positioning accuracy and efficiency, modeling and control of piezoelectric stick-slip actuators are meaningful and necessary. Firstly, according to the working principle of stick-slip drive, this paper introduces the sub-models with different characteristics, such as hysteresis, dynamics, and friction, and presents the comprehensive modeling representative piezoelectric stick-slip actuators. Next, the control approaches suggested by different scholars are also summarized. Appropriate control strategies are adopted to reduce its tracking error and position error in response to the influence of various factors. Lastly, future research and application prospects in modeling and control are pointed out

Ultra-high precision mechatronics positioning systems are critical devices in current precision engineering and micro- and nano-systems’ technologies, as they allow repeatability and accuracy in the nanometric domain to be achieved. The doctoral thesis deals thoroughly with nonlinear stochastic frictional effects that limit the performances of ultra-high precision devices based on sliding and rolling elements. The state-of-the-art related to the frictional behavior in the pre-sliding and sliding motion regimes is considered and different friction models are validated. Due to its comprehensiveness and simplicity, the generalized Maxwell-slip (GMS) friction model is adopted to characterize frictional disturbances of a translational axis of an actual multi-degrees-of-freedom point-to-point mechatronics positioning system aimed at handling and positioning of microparts. The parameters of the GMS model are identified via innovative experimental set-ups, separately for the actuator-gearhead assembly and for the linear guideways, and included in the overall MATLAB/SIMULINK model of the used device. With the aim of compensating frictional effects, the modeled responses of the system are compared to experimental results when the system is controlled by means of a conventional proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller, when the PID controller is complemented with an additional feed-forward model-based friction compensator and, finally, when the system is controlled via a self-tuning adaptive regulator. The adaptive regulator, implemented within the real-time field programmable gate array based control system, is proven to be the most efficient and is hence used in the final repetitive point-to-point positioning tests. Nanometric-range precision and accuracy (better than 250 nm), both in the case of short-range (micrometric) and long-range (millimeter) travels, are achieved. Different sensors, actuators and other design components, along with other control typologies, are experimentally validated in ultra-high precision positioning applications as well.Mehatronički sustavi ultra-visokih (nanometarskih) preciznosti i točnosti pozicioniranja su u današnje vrijeme vrlo važni u preciznom inženjerstvu i tehnologiji mikro- i nano-sustava.

The design and control of an actively restrained passive mechatronic system for safety-critical applications

Development of manipulators that interact closely with humans has been a focus of research in fields such as robot-assisted surgery and haptic interfaces for many years. Recent introduction of powered surgical-assistant devices into the operating theatre has meant that robot manipulators have been required to interact with both patients and surgeons. Most of these manipulators are modified industrial robots. However, the use of high-powered mechanisms in the operating theatre could compromise safety of the patient, surgeon, and operating room staff. As a solution to the safety problem, the use of actively restrained passive arms has been proposed. Clutches or brakes at each joint are used to restrict the motion of the end-effector to restrain it to a pre-defined region or path. However, these devices have only had limited success in following pre-defined paths under human guidance. In this research, three major limitations of existing passive devices actively restrained are addressed. [Continues.

Biocompatibility testing is a complex and time-consuming process that can create significant delays when new medical devices and systems are brought to market. This thesis summarises work performed when automating a platform that incorporates new technologies to speed up the test protocol. As part of the H2020 project PANBioRa, several partners within the consortium have developed sensing technologies for cytotoxicity and cytokine analysis which are intended for inclusion in a multi-test platform. This platform is designed for use in the medical device industry and for use in hospitals, where tests on individuals will provide personal biocompatibility results. Dublin City University has been tasked with integrating the novel sensing methods to determine cell health and to design the system so that it is contained in a user-friendly bench-top unit. The thesis is focused on the design of an autofocusing microscope that will be used to identify cells, test for confluency within cell chambers, and determine cell health throughout the testing process by implementing image processing algorithms. The microscope is designed to obtain approximately 10x magnification and to have a physical size that allows it to move and operate as an end effector of a robotic system, meaning it can navigate to various cell locations. The objective of this project was therefore to design, construction, and validation of a high precision multi-axis robot to control the position and focus of the microscope, while in addition meeting the cost and size demands of the project. With the system being capable of moving the microscope assembly into various positions where cells were present, while with the desired level of accuracy. Continuing to autofocus on cells and collect Images of cells to a level where the desired characteristics could be determined

Advancing the Underactuated Grasping Capabilities of Single Actuator Prosthetic Hands

The last decade has seen significant advancements in upper limb prosthetics, specifically in the myoelectric control and powered prosthetic hand fields, leading to more active and social lifestyles for the upper limb amputee community. Notwithstanding the improvements in complexity and control of myoelectric prosthetic hands, grasping still remains one of the greatest challenges in robotics. Upper-limb amputees continue to prefer more antiquated body-powered or powered hook terminal devices that are favored for their control simplicity, lightweight and low cost; however, these devices are nominally unsightly and lack in grasp variety. The varying drawbacks of both complex myoelectric and simple body-powered devices have led to low adoption rates for all upper limb prostheses by amputees, which includes 35% pediatric and 23% adult rejection for complex devices and 45% pediatric and 26% adult rejection for body-powered devices [1]. My research focuses on progressing the grasping capabilities of prosthetic hands driven by simple control and a single motor, to combine the dexterous functionality of the more complex hands with the intuitive control of the more simplistic body-powered devices with the goal of helping upper limb amputees return to more active and social lifestyles. Optimization of a prosthetic hand driven by a single actuator requires the optimization of many facets of the hand. This includes optimization of the finger kinematics, underactuated mechanisms, geometry, materials and performance when completing activities of daily living. In my dissertation, I will present chapters dedicated to improving these subsystems of single actuator prosthetic hands to better replicate human hand function from simple control. First, I will present a framework created to optimize precision grasping – which is nominally unstable in underactuated configurations – from a single actuator. I will then present several novel mechanisms that allow a single actuator to map to higher degree of freedom motion and multiple commonly used grasp types. I will then discuss how fingerpad geometry and materials can better grasp acquisition and frictional properties within the hand while also providing a method of fabricating lightweight custom prostheses. Last, I will analyze the results of several human subject testing studies to evaluate the optimized hands performance on activities of daily living and compared to other commercially available prosthesis
