    ROAM: a Rich Object Appearance Model with Application to Rotoscoping

    Rotoscoping, the detailed delineation of scene elements through a video shot, is a painstaking task of tremendous importance in professional post-production pipelines. While pixel-wise segmentation techniques can help for this task, professional rotoscoping tools rely on parametric curves that offer the artists a much better interactive control on the definition, editing and manipulation of the segments of interest. Sticking to this prevalent rotoscoping paradigm, we propose a novel framework to capture and track the visual aspect of an arbitrary object in a scene, given a first closed outline of this object. This model combines a collection of local foreground/background appearance models spread along the outline, a global appearance model of the enclosed object and a set of distinctive foreground landmarks. The structure of this rich appearance model allows simple initialization, efficient iterative optimization with exact minimization at each step, and on-line adaptation in videos. We demonstrate qualitatively and quantitatively the merit of this framework through comparisons with tools based on either dynamic segmentation with a closed curve or pixel-wise binary labelling

    Applications of computer-graphics animation for motion-perception research

    The advantages and limitations of using computer animated stimuli in studying motion perception are presented and discussed. Most current programs of motion perception research could not be pursued without the use of computer graphics animation. Computer generated displays afford latitudes of freedom and control that are almost impossible to attain through conventional methods. There are, however, limitations to this presentational medium. At present, computer generated displays present simplified approximations of the dynamics in natural events. Very little is known about how the differences between natural events and computer simulations influence perceptual processing. In practice, the differences are assumed to be irrelevant to the questions under study, and that findings with computer generated stimuli will generalize to natural events

    Roto++: Accelerating professional rotoscoping using shape manifolds

    Rotoscoping (cutting out different characters/objects/layers in raw video footage) is a ubiquitous task in modern post-production and represents a significant investment in person-hours. In this work, we study the particular task of professional rotoscoping for high-end, live action movies and propose a new framework that works with roto-artists to accelerate the workflow and improve their productivity. Working with the existing keyframing paradigm, our first contribution is the development of a shape model that is updated as artists add successive keyframes. This model is used to improve the output of traditional interpolation and tracking techniques, reducing the number of keyframes that need to be specified by the artist. Our second contribution is to use the same shape model to provide a new interactive tool that allows an artist to reduce the time spent editing each keyframe. The more keyframes that are edited, the better the interactive tool becomes, accelerating the process and making the artist more efficient without compromising their control. Finally, we also provide a new, professionally rotoscoped dataset that enables truly representative, real-world evaluation of rotoscoping methods. We used this dataset to perform a number of experiments, including an expert study with professional roto-artists, to show, quantitatively, the advantages of our approach

    Video looping of human cyclic motion

    In this thesis, a system called Video Looping is developed to analyze human cyclic motions. Video Looping allows users to extract human cyclic motion from a given video sequence. This system analyzes similarities from a large amount of live footage to find the point of smooth transition. The final cyclic loop is created using only a few output images. Video Looping is useful not only to learn and understand human movements, but also to apply the cyclic loop to various artistic applications. To provide practical animation references, the output images are presented as photo plate sequences to visualize human cyclic motion similar to Eadweard Muybridge's image sequences. The final output images can be used to create experimental projects such as composited multiple video loops or small size of web animations. Furthermore, they can be imported into animation packages, and animators can create keyframe animations by tracing them in 3D software

    The Video Mesh: A Data Structure for Image-based Three-dimensional Video Editing

    This paper introduces the video mesh, a data structure for representing video as 2.5D “paper cutouts.” The video mesh allows interactive editing of moving objects and modeling of depth, which enables 3D effects and post-exposure camera control. The video mesh sparsely encodes optical flow as well as depth, and handles occlusion using local layering and alpha mattes. Motion is described by a sparse set of points tracked over time. Each point also stores a depth value. The video mesh is a triangulation over this point set and per-pixel information is obtained by interpolation. The user rotoscopes occluding contours and we introduce an algorithm to cut the video mesh along them. Object boundaries are refined with per-pixel alpha values. The video mesh is at its core a set of texture mapped triangles, we leverage graphics hardware to enable interactive editing and rendering of a variety of effects. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our representation with special effects such as 3D viewpoint changes, object insertion, depth-of-field manipulation, and 2D to 3D video conversion
