Modeling the object-oriented software process: OPEN and the unified process

Product Focused Freeform Fabrication Education
Presented in this paper is our experience of teaching freeform fabrication to students at
the Missouri University of Science and Technology, and to high school students and
teachers. The emphasis of the curriculum is exposing students to rapid product
development technologies with the goal of creating awareness to emerging career
opportunities in CAD/CAM. Starting from solid modeling, principles of freeform
fabrication, to applications of rapid prototyping and manufacturing in industry sponsored
product development projects, students can learn in-depth freeform fabrication
technologies. Interactive course content with hands-on experience for product

Prototyping Formal System Models with Active Objects
We propose active object languages as a development tool for formal system
models of distributed systems. Additionally to a formalization based on a term
rewriting system, we use established Software Engineering concepts, including
software product lines and object orientation that come with extensive tool
support. We illustrate our modeling approach by prototyping a weak memory
model. The resulting executable model is modular and has clear interfaces
between communicating participants through object-oriented modeling.
Relaxations of the basic memory model are expressed as self-contained variants
of a software product line. As a modeling language we use the formal active
object language ABS which comes with an extensive tool set. This permits rapid
formalization of core ideas, early validity checks in terms of formal invariant
proofs, and debugging support by executing test runs. Hence, our approach

The interaction of lean and building information modeling in construction
Lean construction and Building Information Modeling are quite different initiatives, but both are having profound impacts on the construction industry. A rigorous analysis of the myriad specific interactions between them indicates that a synergy exists which, if properly understood in theoretical terms, can be exploited to improve construction processes beyond the degree to which it might be improved by application of either of these paradigms independently. Using a matrix that juxtaposes BIM functionalities with prescriptive lean construction principles, fifty-six interactions have been identified, all but four of which represent constructive interaction. Although evidence for the majority of these has been found, the matrix is not considered complete, but rather a framework for research to
explore the degree of validity of the interactions. Construction executives, managers, designers and developers of IT systems for construction can also benefit from the framework as an aid to recognizing the potential synergies when planning their lean and BIM adoption strategies
Specifications and Development of Interoperability Solution dedicated to Multiple Expertise Collaboration in a Design Framework
This paper describes the specifications of an interoperability platform based on the PPO (Product Process Organization) model developed by the French community IPPOP in the context of collaborative and innovative design. By using PPO model as a reference, this work aims to connect together heterogonous tools used by experts easing data and information exchanges. After underlining the growing needs of collaborative design process, this paper focuses on interoperability concept by describing current solutions and their limits. Then a solution based on the flexibility of the PPO model adapted to the philosophy of interoperability is proposed. To illustrate these concepts, several examples are more particularly described (robustness analysis, CAD and Product Lifecycle Management systems connections)
Process capability assessments in small development firms
[Abstract}: Assessment-based Software Process Improvement (SPI) programs such as the Capability Maturity Model (CMM), Bootstrap, and SPICE (ISO/IEC 15504) are based on formal frameworks and promote the use of systematic processes and management practices for software development. These approaches identify best practices for the management of software development and when applied, enable organizations to understand, control and improve development processes. The purpose of a SPI assessment is to compare the current processes used in an organization with a list of recommended or âbestâ practices.
This research investigates the adoption of SPI initiatives by four small software development firms. These four firms participated in a process improvement program which was sponsored by Software Engineering Australia (SEA) (Queensland). The assessment method was based on SPICE (ISO/IEC 15504) and included an initial assessment, recommendations, and a follow-up meeting. For each firm, before and after snapshots are provided of the capability as assessed on eight processes. The discussion which follows summarizes the improvements realized and considers the critical success factors relating to SPI adoption for small firms
How to Eat a Cake Without Having It: An Evaluation of the IFIP Working Group 8.1 Report on Information Systems Methodologies
This paper reviews some aspects of Olle et al. [1988]. After an analysis of the terms "method" and "methodology", it is concluded that the book is an exercise in information system (IS) development methodology. We then argue that the aim of the book, the provision of a framework which should help in understanding existing IS development methods, is only partly reached, and that much work towards this goal is still to be done. Finally, we indicate some of the improvements which can be made to the text with respect to the presentation of the material as well as to the attainment of the goal

The realization though is that software engineering specifically lags behind. Most software engineering methodologies that I have studied focus on the mission of software development. It is this realization and the need for structure that led me to review existing methodologies used within my company's software services organization. The definition of what a successful software services methodology entails is rather limited.
