Kernel Square-Loss Exemplar Machines for Image Retrieval
International audienceZepeda and PĂ©rez have recently demonstrated the promise of the exemplar SVM (ESVM) as a feature encoder for image retrieval. This paper extends this approach in several directions: We first show that replacing the hinge loss by the square loss in the ESVM cost function significantly reduces encoding time with negligible effect on accuracy. We call this model square-loss exemplar machine, or SLEM. We then introduce a kernelized SLEM which can be implemented efficiently through low-rank matrix decomposition , and displays improved performance. Both SLEM variants exploit the fact that the negative examples are fixed, so most of the SLEM computational complexity is relegated to an offline process independent of the positive examples. Our experiments establish the performance and computational advantages of our approach using a large array of base features and standard image retrieval datasets
Discriminate-and-Rectify Encoders: Learning from Image Transformation Sets
The complexity of a learning task is increased by transformations in the input space that preserve class identity. Visual object recognition for example is affected by changes in viewpoint, scale, illumination or planar transformations. While drastically altering the visual appearance, these changes are orthogonal to recognition and should not be reflected in the representation or feature encoding used for learning. We introduce a framework for weakly supervised learning of image embeddings that are robust to transformations and selective to the class distribution, using sets of transforming examples (orbit sets), deep parametrizations and a novel orbit-based loss. The proposed loss combines a discriminative, contrastive part for orbits with a reconstruction error that learns to rectify orbit transformations. The learned embeddings are evaluated in distance metric-based tasks, such as one-shot classification under geometric transformations, as well as face verification and retrieval under more realistic visual variability. Our results suggest that orbit sets, suitably computed or observed, can be used for efficient, weakly-supervised learning of semantically relevant image embeddings.This material is based upon work supported by the Center for Brains, Minds and Machines (CBMM), funded by NSF STC award CCF-1231216
A survey of outlier detection methodologies
Outlier detection has been used for centuries to detect and, where appropriate, remove anomalous observations from data. Outliers arise due to mechanical faults, changes in system behaviour, fraudulent behaviour, human error, instrument error or simply through natural deviations in populations. Their detection can identify system faults and fraud before they escalate with potentially catastrophic consequences. It can identify errors and remove their contaminating effect on the data set and as such to purify the data for processing. The original outlier detection methods were arbitrary but now, principled and systematic techniques are used, drawn from the full gamut of Computer Science and Statistics. In this paper, we introduce a survey of contemporary techniques for outlier detection. We identify their respective motivations and distinguish their advantages and disadvantages in a comparative review
Pix3D: Dataset and Methods for Single-Image 3D Shape Modeling
We study 3D shape modeling from a single image and make contributions to it
in three aspects. First, we present Pix3D, a large-scale benchmark of diverse
image-shape pairs with pixel-level 2D-3D alignment. Pix3D has wide applications
in shape-related tasks including reconstruction, retrieval, viewpoint
estimation, etc. Building such a large-scale dataset, however, is highly
challenging; existing datasets either contain only synthetic data, or lack
precise alignment between 2D images and 3D shapes, or only have a small number
of images. Second, we calibrate the evaluation criteria for 3D shape
reconstruction through behavioral studies, and use them to objectively and
systematically benchmark cutting-edge reconstruction algorithms on Pix3D.
Third, we design a novel model that simultaneously performs 3D reconstruction
and pose estimation; our multi-task learning approach achieves state-of-the-art
