ERP system implementation in UK Joinery SMEs
The capabilities of an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system to integrate all necessary business functions into a single system with a shared database efficiently and effectively has persuaded organisations to adopt them. Research shows that ERP implementation in both large and small to medium enterprises has been a difficult challenge for organisations throughout the years. Despite the many advantages of ERP systems, there isn t a clear and easy way of implementing them in Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs). The motivation for the research is to investigate the barriers to ERP software system implementation in an SME using a case study approach, and to identify the steps to overcome these barriers and investigate the claim of ERP vendors that their ERP solutions improve the performance of their customers, the profitability and efficiency of work processes. This research identifies the barriers to ERP implementation in an SME, provides an overview of the traditional and current approaches of ERP implementation and discusses the effects of adopting an ERP system on the company s overall performance. The research uses a mix of methods including case study research and action research. Un-structured interviews and semi structured interviews approaches with negotiation and change management techniques were also used in order to generate knowledge concerning the problems at the case study.
The case study has determined reasons for failed implementations, unlike previous research which suggests education level impact upon the implementation of the ERP system, the study demonstrates that an insufficient education level is not a necessary condition for resistance to change. It has also been shown in this research that high level management can have a direct influence on the ERP implementation in SMEs. This research suggests that SMEs need to standardize processes into business routines which will influence the introduction of a different knowledge store that helps the development of the new system; however employee s resistance to change, lack of trust of the new system and lack of knowledge has limited the implementation process by increasing mistakes and duplication of data. The ERP system has been evaluated by the end users at the case study organisation, and the results suggests that the implementation of an ERP system has improved the overall business and has increased the performance, the profitability and the efficiency of work processes. This research adds to the overall knowledge of ERP implementation in SMEs by deriving a better understanding of the problem in the body of knowledge and identifying the barriers to ERP implementation in SMEs. It provides recommendations that have been tested in the case study organisation for overcoming ERP implementation barriers in SMEs, and a financial model of the implementation costs and benefits. Finally, the recommendations presented in this thesis and suggested areas for further research set out the potential way forward to advance knowledge in this area
Shortening Changeover Time - An Industrial Study
This paper presents the results of the use of the Single Minute Exchange of Die method to shorten changeover time on machines in a polish production company. This project has been developed for a manufacturing company, whose products are fiberboard, hardboard and softboard products manufactured by a highly specialized industry using only pure wood fibers. Long changeover times used to conduct to bad results in timely delivery of orders. Therefore, in this work each element of the changeover time was analyzed to understand if it could be eliminated, moved or simplified. A decade of Portuguese research in e-government: Evolution, current standing, and ways forward
In this paper, we present an investigation of the Portuguese research on e-government. Bibliometric techniques are used to explore all the documents published by researchers affiliated to Portuguese institutions from 2005 to 2014 and listed in the Scopus® database. Research production, impact, source types, language used, subject areas, topics, scopes, methods, authors, institutions, networks, and international cooperation are analysed and discussed. We conclude that so that Portuguese research on e-government can evolve, more researchers should be involved, international cooperation should be developed, and more attention should be given to the study of the reasons behind the very good results of the country in the provision of e-government services, as measured by the international rankings. By establishing the evolution and current standing of e-government research in Portugal and exploring the ways forward, our conclusions may prove useful to e-government researchers, research managers, and research policy makers. © Copyright 2016 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd

Influencia de las nuevas tecnologías en la gestión del conocimiento y su contribución a la innovación en el sector bancario : implicaciones en un grupo financiero en el periodo (2006-15)
Knowledge constitutes one of the key intangible assets for organizations. However, the mere possession of knowledge, however valuable it may be, does not necessarily imply obtaining a competitive advantage. It is necessary to develop an efficient management of it, which implies the development of different activities and attitudes that promote the acquisition, assimilation and transformation of knowledge. In this sense, this work aims to provide empirical evidence of the importance of information technology and communication (ICT) and knowledge management (KM) in the innovation of the company as well as its performance. Based on this purpose, the following general objective is presented: The construction of a relational explanatory model that involves QA practices, innovation and ICT.
There are many studies that run in the search for the real causes of the presence of innovation in companies, although the number of investigations is diminished when they are focused on the field of the financial sector. Traditionally, the financial sector has been one of the areas of business .., where many resources have been invested in ICT, and this digital transformation is having a significant impact on the habits of customers who use, increasingly, different business channels .., cio. The main Spanish financial entities (Santander, BBVA and CaixaBank) provide all kinds of communication channels, m unications, such as forums, knowledge communities, social networks, apps, intranets, etc. to improve the capacity of the organization and create knowledge from both employees and customers. In the last decade, the increase in the use of Web 2.0 tools by the banking sector has been notable, as well as the orientation towards electronic banking of numerous entities fostered by the vertiginous development of ICT.
Therefore, taking into account the need to increase knowledge about the relationship cited above, the main differential aspect of this thesis is to expand knowledge about the creation of value in innovation through the use of ICT in CG and its effects in organizational performance in the financial sector. Specifically, based on hypotheses designed to corroborate whether the increase in the degree of use of ICT contributes to the innovation of products, services and improvements in CaixaBank's processes. In addition to an improvement in the capacity of the GC and the performance of the organization.
Thus, the results obtained in the case of the CaixaBank financial entity during the period from
2006 to 2015. It is clear that the increase in the degree of use of ICT in QA processes and innovation has allowed, among others, the digitalization of processes, multichannel, the creation of on-line services and multi-device Web 2.0 tools have facilitated the emergence of CaixaBank in social networks and the creation of communities of innovation and knowledge, both for customers and employees. It is therefore certified that CaixaBank fulfills the hypothesis on whether the degree of use of ICT benefits the innovation of financial products and services and the results of CaixaBank.El conocimiento constituye uno de los activos intangibles clave para las organizaciones. Sin embargo, la sola posesión del conocimiento, por muy valioso que sea, no implica obligatoriamente la obtención de una ventaja competitiva. Es necesario desarrollar una gestión eficiente del mismo, lo que implica el desarrollo de distintas actividades y actitudes que potencien la adquisición, asimilación y transformación del conocimiento. En este sentido, este trabajo pretende aportar evidencias empíricas de la importancia de las tecnologías de la información y la comunicación (TIC) y la gestión del conocimiento (GC) en la innovación de la empresa así como en su rendimiento. A partir de este propósito, se plantea como objetivo general el siguiente: La construcción de un modelo explicativo relacional que involucre las prácticas de GC, la innovación y las TIC. Son muchos los estudios que discurren en la búsqueda de las causas reales de la presencia de la innovación en las empresas, aunque el número de investigaciones se ve disminuido cuando son enfocadas en el ámbito del sector financiero. Tradicionalmente, el sector financiero ha sido uno de los ámbitos empresa..,riales en el que se han invertido muchos recursos en las TIC, y esta transformación digital está teniendo un notable impacto en los hábitos de los clientes que utilizan, cada vez más, diferentes canales de nego..,cio. Las principales entidades financieras españolas (Santander, BBVA y CaixaBank) proporcionan todo tipo de canales de co..,m unicaciones, como foros, comunidades de conocimiento, redes sociales, apps, intranets, etc. para mejorar la capacidad de la organización y crear conocimiento tanto procedente de los empleados como de los clientes. En la última década, el aumento de la utilización de herram ien..,tas Web 2.0 por parte del sector bancario ha sido notable, así como la orientación hacia la banca electrónica de numerosas entidades propiciado por el vertiginoso desarrollo de las TIC. Por tanto, teniendo en cuenta la necesidad de aumentar los conocimientos acerca de la relación citada anteriormente, el principal aspecto diferencial de esta tesis es ampliar el conocimiento sobre la creación de valor en la innovación mediante la utilización de las TIC en la GC y sus efectos en el desempeño organizacional en el sector financiero. Concretamente a partir de las hipótesis orientadas a corroborar si el aumento del grado de utilización de las TIC contribuye a la innovación de productos, servicios y mejoras en los procesos de CaixaBank. Además de una mejora en la capacidad de la GC y el rendimiento de la organización. Así pues, se presentan los resultados obtenidos en el caso de la entidad financiera CaixaBank durante el período que va del año 2006 hasta el 2015. Quedando de manifiesto que el aumento del grado de utilización de las TIC en los procesos de GC y la innovación, ha permitido entre otros, la digitalización de procesos, la multicanalidad, la creación de servicios on-line y multidispositivo. Las herramientas Web 2.0 han facilitado la aparición de CaixaBank en las redes sociales y la creación de las comunidades de innovación y conocimiento, tanto de clientes como de empleados. Certificándose pues que en CaixaBank se cumplen las hipótesis sobre si el grado de utilización de las TIC beneficia la innovación de productos y servicios financieros y los resultados de CaixaBank.Postprint (published version
Políticas de Copyright de Publicações Científicas em Repositórios Institucionais: O Caso do INESC TEC
A progressiva transformação das práticas científicas, impulsionada pelo desenvolvimento das novas Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação (TIC), têm possibilitado aumentar o acesso à informação, caminhando gradualmente para uma abertura do ciclo de pesquisa. Isto permitirá resolver a longo prazo uma adversidade que se tem colocado aos investigadores, que passa pela existência de barreiras que limitam as condições de acesso, sejam estas geográficas ou financeiras. Apesar da produção científica ser dominada, maioritariamente, por grandes editoras comerciais, estando sujeita às regras por estas impostas, o Movimento do Acesso Aberto cuja primeira declaração pública, a Declaração de Budapeste (BOAI), é de 2002, vem propor alterações significativas que beneficiam os autores e os leitores. Este Movimento vem a ganhar importância em Portugal desde 2003, com a constituição do primeiro repositório institucional a nível nacional. Os repositórios institucionais surgiram como uma ferramenta de divulgação da produção científica de uma instituição, com o intuito de permitir abrir aos resultados da investigação, quer antes da publicação e do próprio processo de arbitragem (preprint), quer depois (postprint), e, consequentemente, aumentar a visibilidade do trabalho desenvolvido por um investigador e a respetiva instituição. O estudo apresentado, que passou por uma análise das políticas de copyright das publicações científicas mais relevantes do INESC TEC, permitiu não só perceber que as editoras adotam cada vez mais políticas que possibilitam o auto-arquivo das publicações em repositórios institucionais, como também que existe todo um trabalho de sensibilização a percorrer, não só para os investigadores, como para a instituição e toda a sociedade. A produção de um conjunto de recomendações, que passam pela implementação de uma política institucional que incentive o auto-arquivo das publicações desenvolvidas no âmbito institucional no repositório, serve como mote para uma maior valorização da produção científica do INESC TEC.The progressive transformation of scientific practices, driven by the development of new Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), which made it possible to increase access to information, gradually moving towards an opening of the research cycle. This opening makes it possible to resolve, in the long term, the adversity that has been placed on researchers, which involves the existence of barriers that limit access conditions, whether geographical or financial. Although large commercial publishers predominantly dominate scientific production and subject it to the rules imposed by them, the Open Access movement whose first public declaration, the Budapest Declaration (BOAI), was in 2002, proposes significant changes that benefit the authors and the readers. This Movement has gained importance in Portugal since 2003, with the constitution of the first institutional repository at the national level. Institutional repositories have emerged as a tool for disseminating the scientific production of an institution to open the results of the research, both before publication and the preprint process and postprint, increase the visibility of work done by an investigator and his or her institution. The present study, which underwent an analysis of the copyright policies of INESC TEC most relevant scientific publications, allowed not only to realize that publishers are increasingly adopting policies that make it possible to self-archive publications in institutional repositories, all the work of raising awareness, not only for researchers but also for the institution and the whole society. The production of a set of recommendations, which go through the implementation of an institutional policy that encourages the self-archiving of the publications developed in the institutional scope in the repository, serves as a motto for a greater appreciation of the scientific production of INESC TEC

Anuário Científico – 2009 & 2010 Resumos de Artigos, Comunicações, Teses, Patentes, Livros e Monografias de Mestrado
O Conselho Técnico-Científico do Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa (ISEL), na senda da consolidação da divulgação do conhecimento e da ciência desenvolvidos pelo nosso corpo docente, propõe-se publicar mais uma edição do Anuário Científico, relativa à produção científica de 2009 e 2010.
A investigação, enquanto vertente estratégica do Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa (ISEL), tem concorrido para o seu reconhecimento nacional e internacional como instituição de referência e de qualidade na área do ensino das engenharias.
É também nesta vertente que o ISEL consubstancia a sua ligação à sociedade portuguesa e internacional através da transferência de tecnologia e de conhecimento, resultantes da sua atividade científica e pedagógica, contribuindo para o seu desenvolvimento e crescimento de forma sustentada.
São parte integrante do Anuário Científico todos os conteúdos com afiliação ISEL resultantes de resumos de artigos publicados em livros, revistas e atas de congressos que os docentes do ISEL apresentaram em fóruns e congressos nacionais e internacionais, bem como teses e patentes.
Desde 2002, ano da publicação da primeira edição, temos assistido a uma evolução crescente do número de publicações de conteúdos científicos, fruto do trabalho desenvolvido pelos docentes que se têm empenhado com afinco e perseverança.
Contudo, nestes dois anos (2009 e 2010) constatou-se um decréscimo no número de publicações, principalmente em 2010. Uma das causas poderá estar diretamente relacionada com a redução do financiamento ao ensino superior uma vez que limita toda a investigação no âmbito da atividade de I&D e da produção científica.
Na sequência da implementação do Processo de Bolonha em 2006, o ISEL promoveu a criação de cursos de Mestrado disponibilizando uma oferta educativa mais completa e diversificada aos seus alunos, mas também de outras instituições, dotando-os de competências inovadoras apropriadas ao mercado de trabalho que hoje se carateriza mais competitivo e dinâmico. Terminados os períodos escolar e de execução das monografias dos alunos, os resumos destas são igualmente parte integrante deste Anuário, no que concerne à conclusão dos Mestrados em 2009 e 2010.A fim de permitir uma maior acessibilidade à comunidade científica e à sociedade civil, o Anuário Científico será editado de ora avante em formato eletrónico.
Excecionalmente esta edição contempla publicações referentes a dois anos – 2009 e 2010
