    Performance optimization of a leagility inspired supply chain model: a CFGTSA algorithm based approach

    Lean and agile principles have attracted considerable interest in the past few decades. Industrial sectors throughout the world are upgrading to these principles to enhance their performance, since they have been proven to be efficient in handling supply chains. However, the present market trend demands a more robust strategy incorporating the salient features of both lean and agile principles. Inspired by these, the leagility principle has emerged, encapsulating both lean and agile features. The present work proposes a leagile supply chain based model for manufacturing industries. The paper emphasizes the various aspects of leagile supply chain modeling and implementation and proposes a new Hybrid Chaos-based Fast Genetic Tabu Simulated Annealing (CFGTSA) algorithm to solve the complex scheduling problem prevailing in the leagile environment. The proposed CFGTSA algorithm is compared with the GA, SA, TS and Hybrid Tabu SA algorithms to demonstrate its efficacy in handling complex scheduling problems

    Hierarchical Structure in Brazilian Industrial Firms: An Econometric Study

    The paper investigates different implications of theoretical models for hierarchical structure. A sample of 6578 firms in the Brazilian manufacturing industry is considered and explanatory factors pertaining structural characteristics, network technology, technological innovations, managerial innovations and Incentive mechanisms are investigated. Important joint effects are detected for all groups of variables in partial contrast with the related previous literature. Moreover, one detects significant joint effect of the newly considered group of incentive mechanisms variables. The evidence in terms of individual effects is largely consistent with the predicted effects from the theoretical literature on hierarchy.

    This lecture provides an introduction to the economics of Internet search engines. After a brief review of the historical development of the technology and the industry, I describe some of the economic features of the auction system used for displaying ads. It turns out that some relatively simple economic models provide significant insight into the operation of these auctions. In particular, the classical theory of two-sided matching markets turns out to be very useful in this context.

    Ranking of vitrified grinding wheel parameters by using analytical hierarchical process (AHP) for surface roughness of work piece in grinding operation

    Objective of grinding process is to generate high quality surface finish on work piece. There are many parameters which influence on the work piece roughness. Work piece material and characteristics, grinding wheel specification, grinding conditions and dressing conditions influence on the surface quality of the work piece. Selection of grinding wheel is important aspect for producing good quality of surface finish on the work piece. The main components of grinding wheel are the abrasive grains, bond material and porosity. Selection of correct grinding wheel is necessary for generating better surface finish on the work piece. Analytical Hierarchical Process (AHP) is used for ranking of vitrified bond grinding wheel parameters on surface roughness on the work piece in sub sequent grinding operation. The grit, grade, (Hardness of wheel) structure and type of abrasive are critically assisted in terms of the surface finish produced on work piece in the subsequent grinding operation. Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) shows that the abrasive grit of grinding wheel has first rank and grade (hardness) of the wheel has Second rank for the producing surface finish on the work piece after grinding operation. Structure and type of abrasive of wheel have a third and fourth rank respectively. Thus, AHP gives qualitative way of controlling work piece surface roughness in sub-sequent grinding operation by selecting proper grinding wheel of vitrified bond which helps the user to select the correct grinding wheel

    Quantitative modelling approaches for lean manufacturing under uncertainty

    [EN] Lean manufacturing (LM) applies different tools that help to eliminate waste as well as the opera-tions that do not add value to the product or processes to increase the value of each performedactivity. Here the main motivation is to study how quantitative modelling approaches can supportLM tools even under system and environment uncertainties. The main contributions of the articleare: (i) providing a systematic literature review of 99 works related to the modelling of uncertaintyin LM environments; (ii) proposing a methodology to classify the reviewed works; (iii) classifyingLM works under uncertainty; and (iv) identify quantitative models and their solution to deal withuncertainty in LM environments by identifying the main variables involved. Hence this article pro-vides a conceptual framework for future LM quantitative modelling under uncertainty as a guide foracademics, researchers and industrial practitioners. The main findings identify that LM under uncer-tainty has been empirically investigated mainly in the US, India and the UK in the automotive andaerospace manufacturing sectors using analytical and simulation models to minimise time and cost.Value stream mapping (VSM) and just in time (JIT) are the most used LM techniques to reduce wastein a context of system uncertainty.The research leading to these results received funding fromthe project 'Industrial Production and Logistics Optimizationin Industry 4.0' (i4OPT) (Ref.     Scoping Review of Kaizen and Green Practices: State of the Art and Future Directions

    ABSTRACT: Given the importance that environmental management is acquiring, the main aim of this work is to know what the state of the field kaizen and green practices is at present. A systematic narrative review is conducted in accordance with the PRISMA Statement. Two databases (Web of Science and Scopus) were searched. Finally, after applying the defined inclusion and exclusion criteria, 19 documents were analyzed. Based on the results, it might be concluded that, despite the growing interest in the relationship between kaizen and green practices, this is a topic in the early stages of development, with a clear predominance of case studies. It is, therefore, necessary to develop more research on this kaizen and green issue as improving environmental management is undeniably becoming a must in today's competitive environment. For instance, more research is needed on the application of kaizen tools as results obtained so far seem not to be conclusive. Additionally, more academic and rigorous studies should be developed on this topic as many of the analyzed papers seem to be clearly created for dissemination among practitioners, some of them lacking the traditional academic structure and scientific method during their development

    A case study of lean, sustainable manufacturing

    A small furniture production company has integrated lean tools and sustainability concepts with discrete event simulation modeling and analysis as well as mathematical optimization to make a positive impact on the environment, society and its own financial success. The principles of lean manufacturing that aid in the elimination of waste have helped the company meet ever increasing customer demands while preserving valuable resources for future generations. The implementation of lean and sustainable manufacturing was aided by the use of discrete event simulation and optimization to overcome deficits in lean’s traditional implementation strategies. Lean and green manufacturing can have a more significant, positive impact on multiple measures of operational performance when implemented concurrently rather than separately.
