    Design and implementation of the node identity internetworking architecture

    The Internet Protocol (IP) has been proven very flexible, being able to accommodate all kinds of link technologies and supporting a broad range of applications. The basic principles of the original Internet architecture include end-to-end addressing, global routeability and a single namespace of IP addresses that unintentionally serves both as locators and host identifiers. The commercial success and widespread use of the Internet have lead to new requirements, which include internetworking over business boundaries, mobility and multi-homing in an untrusted environment. Our approach to satisfy these new requirements is to introduce a new internetworking layer, the node identity layer. Such a layer runs on top of the different versions of IP, but could also run directly on top of other kinds of network technologies, such as MPLS and 2G/3G PDP contexts. This approach enables connectivity across different communication technologies, supports mobility, multi-homing, and security from ground up. This paper describes the Node Identity Architecture in detail and discusses the experiences from implementing and running a prototype

    An extranet in action: Globally networked academics and students

    The vexed issue of keeping staff and students up-to-date in the fast moving world of internetworking has been exercising the minds of many tertiary institutions for several years. One Australian Faculty of IT has partnered with industry in an attempt to keep the course materials up-to-date and relevant. This has led to major changes in the culture of the faculty as staff too have been trained in the certification subjects and must pass rigorous industry level examinations in order to be qualified to teach the material. This paper describes the programs and reports as well on the results of student surveys which were undertaken to see if the policy was meeting the needs of the students.     An investigation into internetworking education

    Computer network technology and the Internet grew rapidly in recent years. Their growth created a large demand from industry for the development of IT and internetworking professionals. These professionals need to be equipped with both technical hands-on skills and non-technical or soft skills. In order to supply new professionals to the industry, educational institutions need to address these skills training in their curricula. Technical hands-on skills in internetworking education can be emphasised through the practical use of equipment in classrooms. The provision of the networking equipment to the internetworking students is a challenge. Particularly, university students in developing countries may find that this equipment is ineffectively provided by their teaching institutions, because of the expense. Modern online learning tools, such as remote access laboratories, may be used to address this need. However, the provision of such tools will also need to concentrate upon the pedagogical values. In addition, traditional remote access laboratories provide only text-based access, which was originally designed for highly professional use. Novice students may struggle with learning in these virtual environments, especially when the physical equipment is not available locally. Furthermore, non-technical skills or soft skills are social skills that should not be neglected in graduates’ future workplaces. A traditional model of developing soft skills that was used in face-to-face classroom may not be as effective when applied in an online classroom. Research on students’ opinions about their soft skills development during attending internetworking courses is needed to be conducted. In order to address both research needs, this study was focused on two research aspects related to online learning in internetworking education. The first focus was on research into providing a suitable technical learning environment to distance internetworking students. The second focus was on the students’ opinions about their non-technical skills development. To provide a close equivalent of a face-to-face internetworking learning environment to remote students in Thailand, a transformation of a local internetworking laboratory was conducted. A new multimedia online learning environment integrated pedagogically-rich tools such as state model diagrams (SMDs), a real-time video streaming of equipment and a voice communication tool. Mixed research data were gathered from remote online and local student participants. The remote online participants were invited to use the new learning environment developed in this study. Qualitative research data were collected from twelve remote online students after their trial usage. Concurrently, another set of research data were collected from local students asking their opinion about the development of soft skills in the internetworking course. There were sixty six participants in this second set of research data. Although the research data was limited, restricting the researcher’s ability to generalise, it can be concluded that the provision of multimedia tools in an online internetworking learning environment was beneficial to distant students. The superiority of the traditional physical internetworking laboratory cannot be overlooked; however, the remote laboratory could be used as a supplementary self-practice tool. A concrete learning element such as a real-time video stream and diagrams simplified students learning processes in the virtual environment. Faster communication with the remote instructors and the equipment are also critical factors for a remote access network to be successful. However, unlike the face-to-face laboratory, the future challenge of the online laboratory will creating materials which will encourage students to build soft skills in their laboratory sessions

    Internetworking: an analysis and proposal

    As the number of computer networks has grown, so has the desire for users on these networks to communicate with each other, thus the need for internetworking. Unfortunately, many of these networks were not designed with internetworking capabilities in mind. The internetworking facilities offered by a typical network range from non-existent to state of the art. Two major efforts towards internetworking are the DARPA Internet protocols and the OSI Internetworking protocols. The goals of this thesis are to acquaint the reader with the qualities which are desired in an internetworking scheme, to describe how internetworking is accomplished currently, and how these protocols might be modified to better suit the needs of the internetwork user. To this end, this thesis will develop the functional requirements for an ideal internetwork, describe two current methods for internetworking, and analyze these methods against the ideal internetwork. The advantages and disadvantages of each internetworking method will be discussed. After this analysis, suggestions will be made as to how these internetworking schemes could more closely resemble the ideal internetwork

    Optimization of energy consumption in future intelligent energy networks (or Smart Grids) will be based on grid-integrated near-real-time communications between various grid elements in generation, transmission, distribution and loads. This paper discusses some of the challenges and opportunities of communications research in the areas of smart grid and smart metering. In particular, we focus on some of the key communications challenges for realizing interoperable and future-proof smart grid/metering networks, smart grid security and privacy, and how some of the existing networking technologies can be applied to energy management.     Quality-constrained routing in publish/subscribe systems

    Routing in publish/subscribe (pub/sub) features a communication model where messages are not given explicit destination addresses, but destinations are determined by matching the subscription declared by subscribers. For a dynamic computing environment with applications that have quality demands, this is not sufficient. Routing decision should, in such environments, not only depend on the subscription predicate, but should also take the quality-constraints of applications and characteristics of network paths into account. We identified three abstraction levels of these quality constraints: functional, middleware and network. The main contribution of the paper is the concept of the integration of these constraints into the pub/sub routing. This is done by extending the syntax of pub/sub system and applying four generic, proposed by us, guidelines. The added values of quality-constrained routing concept are: message delivery satisfying quality demands of applications, improvement of system scalability and more optimise use of the network resources. We discuss the use case that shows the practical value of our concept

    Accommodation Use by Individuals with Disabilities in Occupational Therapy Fieldwork

    The number of individuals enrolling in postsecondary education with a diagnosed disability is rising. However, the literature reflects a gap between mandated institutional policies and the extent of accommodation use and success. This study examines the use, type, and prevalence of accommodations used by students with disabilities completing occupational therapy fieldwork rotations, as well as the common barriers to accommodation access. Snowball sampling methodology was utilized to send out a 26-item questionnaire to occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants. Two hundred and ninety-two occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants answered the questionnaire to identify disability type, disclosure of disabilities, and types of accommodations used during fieldwork. Results indicated that 47 respondents (16.91%) reported having either a visible and/or invisible disability but of those respondents, only 25 (55.56%) disclosed their disability during postsecondary education. Of the respondents who identified having a disability during fieldwork, 22 (51.16%) perceived that their disability presented challenges, while only 17 (38.64%) requested accommodations. As more than half of respondents felt their disability presented challenges during their fieldwork, strategies are suggested to encourage students to feel more comfortable disclosing their disability. Through creating a culture of openness to disabilities and understanding individual student needs, there is a potential to help increase the rate of disclosure of disability and potentially decrease some of the challenges experienced by students with disabilities on fieldwork. Further research is needed to develop guidelines and programming for fieldwork educators on how to best incorporate accommodations into their programs

    Monitoring and Prevention the Smart Cities

    Nowadays, the intensive use of Technology Information (TI) provide solutions to problems of the high population density, energy conservation and cities management. This produces a newest concept of the city, Smart City. But the inclusion of TI in the city brings associated new problems, specifically the generation of electromagnetic fields from the available and new technological infrastructures installed in the city that did not exist before. This new scenario produces a negative effect on a particular group of the society, as are the group of persons with electromagnetic hypersensitivity pathology. In this work we propose a system that would allow you to detect and prevent the continuous exposure to such electromagnetic fields, without the need to include more devices or infrastructure which would only worsen these effects. Through the use of the architecture itself and Smart City services, it is possible to infer the necessary knowledge to know the situation of the EMF radiation and thus allow users to avoid the areas of greatest conflict. This knowledge, not only allows us to get EMF current map of the city, but also allows you to generate predictions and detect future risk situations.This work has been performed within project Smart University funded from the Vice President office for Information Technology at the University of Alicante
