Multiple Coordinated Views for Searching and Navigating Web Content Repositories
The advantages and positive effects of multiple coordinated views on search performance have been documented in several studies. This paper describes the implementation of multiple coordinated views within the Media Watch on Climate Change, a domain-speciïŹc news aggregation portal available at
www.ecoresearch.net/climate that combines a portfolio of semantic services with a visual information exploration and retrieval interface. The system builds contextualized information spaces by enriching the content repository with geospatial, semantic and temporal annotations, and by applying semi-automated ontology learning to create a controlled vocabulary for structuring the stored information. Portlets visualize the different dimensions of the contextualized information spaces, providing the user with multiple views on the latest news media coverage. Context information facilitates access to complex datasets and helps users navigate large repositories of Web documents. Currently, the system synchronizes information landscapes, domain ontologies, geographic maps, tag clouds and just-in-time information retrieval agents that suggest similar topics and nearby locations
Information support and interactive planning in the digital factory : approach and industry-driven evaluation
In the modern world we are continuously surrounded by information. The human brain has to analyse and interpret this information to transform into useable knowledge that is then used in decision making activities. The advent and implementation of Industry 4.0 will make it a requirement for systems within factories to interact and share large quantities of information with each other. This large volume of information will make it even more difficult for the human resources within the factory to sift through the large amount of information required since there is a limit to the information that our brains can cope with. Just in time information retrieval (JITIR) within the digital factory environment aims to provide support to the human stakeholders in the system by proactively yet non-intrusively providing the required information at the right time based on the users context. This paper will therefore provide an insight into the cognitive difficulties experienced by humans in the digital factory and how JITIR can tackle these challenges. By validating the JITIR concept, several industry scenarios have been evaluated: an exemplary model, concerning the machine tool industry, is presented in the paper. The results of this research are a set of guidelines for the development of a digital factory support tool.peer-reviewe
Supporting decision making process with "Ideal" software agents: what do business executives want?
According to Simonâs (1977) decision making theory, intelligence is the first and most important phase in the decision making process. With the escalation of information resources available to business executives, it is becoming imperative to explore the potential and challenges of using agent-based systems to support the intelligence phase of decision-making. This research examines UK executivesâ perceptions of using agent-based support systems and the criteria for design and development of their âidealâ intelligent software agents. The study adopted an inductive approach using focus groups to generate a preliminary set of design criteria of âidealâ agents. It then followed a deductive approach using semi-structured interviews to validate and enhance the criteria. This qualitative research has generated unique insights into executivesâ perceptions of the design and use of agent-based support systems. The systematic content analysis of qualitative data led to the proposal and validation of design criteria at three levels. The findings revealed the most desirable criteria for agent based support systems from the end usersâ point view. The design criteria can be used not only to guide intelligent agent system design but also system evaluation
Representing and coding the knowledge embedded in texts of Health Science Web published articles
Despite the fact that electronic publishing is a common activity to scholars electronic journals are still based in the print model and do not take full advantage of the facilities offered by the Semantic Web environment. This is a report of the results of a research project with the aim of investigating the possibilities of electronic publishing journal articles both as text for human reading and in machine readable format recording the new knowledge contained in the article. This knowledge is identified with the scientific methodology elements such as problem, methodology, hypothesis, results, and conclusions. A model integrating all those elements is proposed which makes explicit and records the knowledge embedded in the text of scientific articles as an ontology. Knowledge thus represented enables its processing by intelligent software agents The proposed model aims to take advantage of these facilities enabling semantic retrieval and validation of the knowledge contained in articles. To validate and enhance the model a set of electronic journal articles were analyzed
An Approach to Model Checking of Multi-agent Data Analysis
The paper presents an approach to verification of a multi-agent data analysis
algorithm. We base correct simulation of the multi-agent system by a finite
integer model. For verification we use model checking tool SPIN. Protocols of
agents are written in Promela language and properties of the multi-agent data
analysis system are expressed in logic LTL. We run several experiments with
SPIN and the model.Comment: In Proceedings MOD* 2014, arXiv:1411.345
Write While You Search: Ambient Searching of a Digital Library in the Context of Writing
We consider ideas for a tighter integration of searching a digital library while writing a paper. A prototype system based on web services is described which allows us to explore the design space of ambient search tools to support and inspire the writing process.published or submitted for publicationis peer reviewe
