This is an author's accepted manuscript of an article published in: “Applied Economics Letters"; Volume 21, Issue 7, 2014; copyright Taylor & Francis; available online at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/13504851.2013.872752The purpose of this article is to infer indicators about the export orientation of firms from the analysis of their corporate websites. Using a dataset of manufacturing firms, two logistic regressions were performed and compared: one considering some firm structural variables, and another considering some web-based variables. Results showed that the website features are good predictors of the export orientation of firms, performing as well as the classic economic variables.Blázquez Soriano, MD.; Doménech I De Soria, J. A Practical Procedure to Integrate the First 1:500 Urban Map of Valencia into a Tile-Based Geospatial Information System

[EN] The use of geographic data from early maps is a common approach to understanding urban geography as well as to study the evolution of cities over time. The specific goal of this paper is to provide a means for the integration of the first 1:500 urban map of the city of Valencia (Spain) on a tile-based geospatial system. We developed a workflow consisting of three stages: the digitization of the original 421 map sheets, the transformation to the European Terrestrial Reference System of 1989 (ETRS89), and the conversion to a tile-based file format, where the second stage is clearly the most mathematically involved. The second stage actually consists of two steps, one transformation from the pixel reference system to the 1929 local reference system followed by a second transformation from the 1929 local to the ETRS89 system. The last stage comprises a map reprojection to adapt to tile-based geospatial standards. The paper describes a pilot study of one map sheet and results showed that the affine and bilinear transformations performed well in both transformations with average residuals under 6 and 3 cm respectively. The online viewer developed in this study shows that the derived tile-based map conforms to common standards and lines up well with other raster and vector datasets. Surface Modification of Polypropilene Non-woven Substrates by Padding with Antistatic Agents for Deposition of Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) Nanofiber Webs by Electrospinning

In recent years, the electrospinning process has become one of the most interesting processes to obtain nanofiber webs with interesting properties for uses in a wide variety of industrial sectors such as filtration, chemical barriers, medical devices, etc., as a consequence of the relatively high surface-to-volume ratio. Among the wide variety of polymers, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) offers good advantages since it is water-soluble and this fact enables easy processing by electrospinning. There are many variables and parameters to be considered in order to optimize PVA nanofiber webs: some of them are related to the polymer solution, some others are related to the process, and some of them are related to the collector substrate. In this work a study on the effects of two different surface pre-treatments on a nonwoven polypropylene substrate as a collector of PVA nanofiber webs has been carried out. In particular, a chemical treatment with anionic antistatics and a physical treatment with lowpressure plasma have been investigated. The effects of these pre-treatments on morphology of PVA nanofiber webs have been evaluated by scanning electron microscopy. Results show that surface resistivity is one of the main parameters influencing the web formation as well as the nature of the electric charge achieved by the pre-treatment. The plasma treatment promotes changes in surface resistivity but it is not enough for good web deposition. Chemical pre-treatment (padding) with anionic antistatic leads to a decrease in surface resistivity up to values in the 1 × 109– 1 × 1011 Ω which is enough for good nanofiber deposition. This work was supported by the Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnologia, grant number DPI2007-66849-C02-02.Blanes, M.; Marco, B.; Gisbert, MJ.; Bonet Aracil, MA.; Balart Gimeno, RA. This is the Final Report for the project “Development of Regional Wind Resource and Wind Plant Output Datasets“(NREL subcontract number: AAM-8-77556-01 under prime contract number: DE-AC36-99GO10337). The report covers the period of the contract from October 15, 2007 through March 15, 2009. The final delivered outcomes of this project include: • This report detailing the work produced. • 30 validation reports for the purpose of tuning the mesoscale models. • The numerical weather prediction (NWP) simulations for 2004-2006 in NetCDF format with a spatial resolution of one arc-minute and a temporal resolution of ten minutes. • 30,544 original sites and 1499 additional that were extracted into time series data files for 2004-2006. These sites had the following information provided: o Wind speed at 100 meters (m) o Rated power output at 100 m o SCORE-lite o Mesoscale forecasts at 100 m power output at 100 m o “Perfect” forecasts o “Two-hourly” persistence forecasts o By-hour monthly climatology forecasts • Solar forecasts from mesoscale models for a regular grid of 8736 points • 28 validation reports for the final data set on publicly available data • 2 validation reports on confidentially sourced data • SCORE-lite validation report • Web-based graphical file server • Extension to the contract where each of the 32,043 sites had wind speed and wind direction pulled from the model runs at 10 m, 20 m, 50 m, 100 m, and 200 m. A paper was written based on this collaboration between the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and 3TIER. The paper was presented at the 7th International Workshop on Large Scale Integration of Wind Power and on Transmission Networks for Offshore Wind Farms, Madrid, May 2008. It was subsequently invited for publication in the Wind Engineering Journal, Volume 32, Number 4, 2008
