    Control, Process Facilitation, and Requirements Change in Offshore Requirements Analysis: The Provider Perspective

    Process, technology, and project factors have been increasingly driving organizations to offshore early software development phases, such as requirements analysis. This emerging trend necessitates greater control and process facilitation between client and vendor sites. The effectiveness of control and facilitation has, however, not been examined within the context of requirements analysis and change. In this study, we examine the role of control and facilitation in managing changing requirements and on success of requirements gathering in the Indian offshore software development environment. Firms found that control by client-site coordinators had a positive impact on requirements analysis success while vender site-coordinators did not have similar influence. Process facilitation by client site-coordinators affected requirements phase success indirectly through control. The study concludes with recommendations for research and practice

    Consequences to flood management of using different probability distributions to estimate extreme rainfall

    The design of flood defences, such as pumping stations, takes into consideration the predicted return periods of extreme precipitation depths. Most commonly these are estimated by fitting the Generalised Extreme Value (GEV) or the Generalised Pareto (GP) probability distributions to the annual maxima series or to the partial duration series. In this paper, annual maxima series of precipitation depths obtained from daily rainfall data measured at three selected stations in southeast UK are analysed using a range of probability distributions. These analyses demonstrate that GEV or GP distributions do not always provide the best fit to the data, and that extreme rainfall estimates for long return periods (e.g. 1 in 100 years) can differ by more than 40% depending on the distribution model used. Since a large number of properties in the UK and elsewhere currently benefit from flood defences designed using the GEV or GP probability distributions, the results from this study question whether the level of protection they offer are appropriate in locations where data demonstrate clearly that alternative probability distributions may have a better fit to the local rainfall data. This work: (a) raises awareness of the limitations of common practices in extreme rainfall analysis; (b) suggests a simple way forward to incorporate uncertainties that is easily applicable to local rainfall data worldwide; and thus (c) contributes to improve flood risk management. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd

    Improved H_2 Storage in Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks Using Li^+, Na^+, and K^+ Dopants, with an Emphasis on Delivery H_2 Uptake

    We use grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations with first principles based force fields to show that alkali metal (Li^+, Na^+, and K^+)-doped zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) lead to significant improvement of H_2 uptake at room temperature. For example, at 298 K and 100 bar, Li-ZIF-70 totally binds to 3.08 wt % H_2, Na-ZIF-70 to 2.19 wt % H_2, and K-ZIF-70 to 1.62 wt % H_2, much higher than 0.74 wt % H_2 for pristine ZIF-70. Thus, the dopant effect follows the order of Li-ZIF > Na-ZIF > K-ZIF, which correlates with the H_2 binding energies to the dopants. Moreover, the total H_2 uptake is higher at lower temperatures: 243 K > 273 K > 298 K. On the other hand, delivery H_2 uptake, which is the difference between the total adsorption at the charging pressure (say 100 bar) and the discharging pressure (say 5 bar), is the important factor for practical on-board hydrogen storage in vehicles. We show that delivery H_2 uptake leads to Na-ZIF-70 (1.37 wt %) > K-ZIF-70 (1.25 wt %) > Li-ZIF-70 (1.07 wt %) > ZIF-70 (0.68 wt %), which is different from the trend from the total and excess uptake. Moreover, the delivery uptake increases with increasing temperatures (i.e., 298 K > 273 K > 243 K)! To achieve high delivery H_2 uptake at room temperature, the large free volume of ZIFs is required. We find that higher H_2 binding energy needs not always lead to higher delivery H_2 uptake

    Cosmic Pathways for Compact Groups in the Milli-Millennium Simulation

    We detected 10 compact galaxy groups (CGs) at z=0z=0 in the semi-analytic galaxy catalog of Guo et al. (2011) for the milli-Millennium Cosmological Simulation (sCGs in mGuo2010a). We aimed to identify potential canonical pathways for compact group evolution and thus illuminate the history of observed nearby compact groups. By constructing merger trees for z=0z=0 sCG galaxies, we studied the cosmological evolution of key properties, and compared them with z=0z=0 Hickson CGs (HCGs). We found that, once sCG galaxies come within 1 (0.5) Mpc of their most massive galaxy, they remain within that distance until z=0z=0, suggesting sCG "birth redshifts". At z=0z=0 stellar masses of sCG most-massive galaxies are within 1010M/M101110^{10} \lesssim M_{\ast}/M_{\odot} \lesssim 10^{11}. In several cases, especially in the two 4- and 5-member systems, the amount of cold gas mass anti-correlates with stellar mass, which in turn correlates with hot gas mass. We define the angular difference between group members' 3D velocity vectors, Δθvel\Delta\theta_{\rm vel}, and note that many of the groups are long-lived because their small values of Δθvel\Delta\theta_{\rm vel} indicate a significant parallel component. For triplets in particular, Δθvel\Delta\theta_{\rm vel} values range between 2020^{\circ} and 4040^{\circ} so that galaxies are coming together along roughly parallel paths, and pairwise separations do not show large pronounced changes after close encounters. The best agreement between sCG and HCG physical properties is for MM_{\ast} galaxy values, but HCG values are higher overall, including for SFRs. Unlike HCGs, due to a tail at low SFR and MM_{\ast}, and a lack of M1011MM_{\ast}\gtrsim 10^{11}M_{\odot} galaxies, only a few sCG galaxies are on the star-forming main sequence.Comment: Style fixes to better match ApJ published version.
