    Algebraic Methods in the Congested Clique

    In this work, we use algebraic methods for studying distance computation and subgraph detection tasks in the congested clique model. Specifically, we adapt parallel matrix multiplication implementations to the congested clique, obtaining an O(n1−2/ω)O(n^{1-2/\omega}) round matrix multiplication algorithm, where ω<2.3728639\omega < 2.3728639 is the exponent of matrix multiplication. In conjunction with known techniques from centralised algorithmics, this gives significant improvements over previous best upper bounds in the congested clique model. The highlight results include: -- triangle and 4-cycle counting in O(n0.158)O(n^{0.158}) rounds, improving upon the O(n1/3)O(n^{1/3}) triangle detection algorithm of Dolev et al. [DISC 2012], -- a (1+o(1))(1 + o(1))-approximation of all-pairs shortest paths in O(n0.158)O(n^{0.158}) rounds, improving upon the O~(n1/2)\tilde{O} (n^{1/2})-round (2+o(1))(2 + o(1))-approximation algorithm of Nanongkai [STOC 2014], and -- computing the girth in O(n0.158)O(n^{0.158}) rounds, which is the first non-trivial solution in this model.     Next Generation Cloud Computing: New Trends and Research Directions

    The landscape of cloud computing has significantly changed over the last decade. Not only have more providers and service offerings crowded the space, but also cloud infrastructure that was traditionally limited to single provider data centers is now evolving. In this paper, we firstly discuss the changing cloud infrastructure and consider the use of infrastructure from multiple providers and the benefit of decentralising computing away from data centers. These trends have resulted in the need for a variety of new computing architectures that will be offered by future cloud infrastructure. These architectures are anticipated to impact areas, such as connecting people and devices, data-intensive computing, the service space and self-learning systems.
