    E-Fulfillment and Multi-Channel Distribution ñ€“ A Review

    This review addresses the specific supply chain management issues of Internet fulfillment in a multi-channel environment. It provides a systematic overview of managerial planning tasks and reviews corresponding quantitative models. In this way, we aim to enhance the understanding of multi-channel e-fulfillment and to identify gaps between relevant managerial issues and academic literature, thereby indicating directions for future research. One of the recurrent patterns in todayñ€ℱs e-commerce operations is the combination of ñ€˜bricks-and-clicksñ€ℱ, the integration of e-fulfillment into a portfolio of multiple alternative distribution channels. From a supply chain management perspective, multi-channel distribution provides opportunities for serving different customer segments, creating synergies, and exploiting economies of scale. However, in order to successfully exploit these opportunities companies need to master novel challenges. In particular, the design of a multi-channel distribution system requires a constant trade-off between process integration and separation across multiple channels.     Tanzania Country Climate Risk Profile Series, Mufindi District

    The agricultural sector in Tanzania is facing high climatic risks. Frequent and severe temperature and precipitation, recurrent droughts and increased incidences of pests and diseases are some of the climate effects that have been observed. Catalyzed with rising input prices and price volatility, there has been a decline in food productivity and farmer incomes. The natural resources that support agricultural production—including rivers and forests—are also degrading due to extreme climate events. Projections indicate that these trends are likely to worsen in the coming decades, with temperatures increasing by nearly 2.7°C by and 4.5°C by 2060 and 2090 respectively (Irish Aid , 2018). At the same time, both day and night temperatures will become more extreme, and precipitation will begin to vary more dramatically by geographic area. Smallholder farmers are particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change because of their low access to the resources needed to adapt to changing conditions. Among smallholders, women are more vulnerable due to their outsized role in agriculture and the social limitations placed on their decision-making and inclusion. A lack of coordination and information symmetry between stakeholders have prevented the full implementation of policies aimed at mitigating climate change. The government, with the support of development partners, has put in place a number of policies, strategies and guidelines to address climate change. The National Agriculture Policy (2013), National Climate Change Strategy (2012), National Adaptation Programme of Action (2007), and the Climate Smart Agriculture guideline (2007) provide a framework for creating agricultural resiliency in the face of climate change. This Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) Profile documents the need for, and adoption of CSA practices at the local level in Mufindi District. This profile is an output of the CSA/SuPER project on Upscaling CSA with Small-Scale Food Producers Organized through Village Savings and Lending Associations (VSLA). The project is implemented by Cooperative Assistance and Relief Everywhere (CARE) International, the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) (now part of the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT), Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), and Wageningen University and Research (WUR). Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used to gather the information herein, in accordance with the methodology employed by Mwongera et al. (2015). Secondary information was collected through an extensive literature review. Primary information was collected from interviews with agricultural experts, farmer focus group discussions, stakeholder workshops, and farmer interviews in the Mufindi District. This profile is organized into six major sections based on the analytical steps of the study. The first section describes the contextual importance of agriculture to Mufindi livelihoods and households. The second describes historic and future climatic trends. The third section highlights farmers’ priority value chains. The fourth section addresses the challenges and cross-cutting issues in the sector. The fifth section details climate hazards experienced by farmers, as well as the current and proposed adaptation strategies. Finally, the sixth section outlines the policies related to CSA and the institutions that facilitate implementation of climate change initiatives

    Optimal Ordering and Pricing Policies for Seasonal Products: Impacts of Demand Uncertainty and Capital Constraint

    With a stochastic price-dependent market demand, this paper investigates how demand uncertainty and capital constraint affect retailer’s integrated ordering and pricing policies towards seasonal products. The retailer with capital constraint is normalized to be with zero capital endowment while it can be financed by an external bank. The problems are studied under a low and high demand uncertainty scenario, respectively. Results show that when demand uncertainty level is relatively low, the retailer faced with demand uncertainty always sets a lower price than the riskless one, while its order quantity may be smaller or larger than the riskless retailer’s which depends on the level of market size. When adding a capital constraint, the retailer will strictly prefer a higher price but smaller quantity policy. However, in a high demand uncertainty scenario, the impacts are more intricate. The retailer faced with demand uncertainty will always order a larger quantity than the riskless one if demand uncertainty level is high enough (above a critical value), while the capital-constrained retailer is likely to set a lower price than the well-funded one when demand uncertainty level falls within a specific interval. Therefore, it can be further concluded that the impact of capital constraint on the retailer’s pricing decision can be influenced by different demand uncertainty levels

    Stochastic Optimization Models for Perishable Products

    For many years, researchers have focused on developing optimization models to design and manage supply chains. These models have helped companies in different industries to minimize costs, maximize performance while balancing their social and environmental impacts. There is an increasing interest in developing models which optimize supply chain decisions of perishable products. This is mainly because many of the products we use today are perishable, managing their inventory is challenging due to their short shelf life, and out-dated products become waste. Therefore, these supply chain decisions impact profitability and sustainability of companies and the quality of the environment. Perishable products wastage is inevitable when demand is not known beforehand. A number of models in the literature use simulation and probabilistic models to capture supply chain uncertainties. However, when demand distribution cannot be described using standard distributions, probabilistic models are not effective. In this case, using stochastic optimization methods is preferred over obtaining approximate inventory management policies through simulation. This dissertation proposes models to help businesses and non-prot organizations make inventory replenishment, pricing and transportation decisions that improve the performance of their system. These models focus on perishable products which either deteriorate over time or have a fixed shelf life. The demand and/or supply for these products and/or, the remaining shelf life are stochastic. Stochastic optimization models, including a two-stage stochastic mixed integer linear program, a two-stage stochastic mixed integer non linear program, and a chance constraint program are proposed to capture uncertainties. The objective is to minimize the total replenishment costs which impact prots and service rate. These models are motivated by applications in the vaccine distribution supply chain, and other supply chains used to distribute perishable products. This dissertation also focuses on developing solution algorithms to solve the proposed optimization models. The computational complexity of these models motivated the development of extensions to standard models used to solve stochastic optimization problems. These algorithms use sample average approximation (SAA) to represent uncertainty. The algorithms proposed are extensions of the stochastic Benders decomposition algorithm, the L-shaped method (LS). These extensions use Gomory mixed integer cuts, mixed-integer rounding cuts, and piecewise linear relaxation of bilinear terms. These extensions lead to the development of linear approximations of the models developed. Computational results reveal that the solution approach presented here outperforms the standard LS method. Finally, this dissertation develops case studies using real-life data from the Demographic Health Surveys in Niger and Bangladesh to build predictive models to meet requirements for various childhood immunization vaccines. The results of this study provide support tools for policymakers to design vaccine distribution networks

    Pricing and warranty decisions in a two-period closed loop supply chain

    For a two-period closed loop supply chain (CLSC) consisting of a manufacturer and a retailer, Stackelberg game analyses are conducted to examine pricing and warranty decisions under two warranty models depending on who offers warranty for new and remanufactured products and the corresponding benchmark models with warranty for new products only. Next, we identify the conditions under which warranty for remanufactured products is offered and investigate how this warranty affects the CLSC operations. Subsequently, comparative studies are carried out to examine equilibrium decisions, profitability and consumer surplus of the CLSC between the two warranty models. Analytical results show that offering warranty for remanufactured products does not affect new product pricing in period 2, but influences pricing of new products in period 1 and remanufactured products in period 2, thereby enhancing remanufacturing, individual and channel profitability, and consumer surplus. Compared to the retailer warranty for remanufactured products, the manufacturer warranty can attain a more equitable profit distribution. If the warranty cost advantage of the manufacturer (retailer) is significant relative to that of the retailer (the manufacturer), the manufacturer (retailer) arises as a natural choice to offer warranty for remanufactured products as this decision enhances both profitability and consumer surplus
