Joint Optimization of Detection Threshold and Resource Allocation in Infrastructure-based Multi-band Cognitive Radio Networks
[EN] Consider an infrastructure-based multi-band cognitive radio network (CRN) where secondary users (SUs) opportunistically access a set of sub-carriers when sensed as idle. The carrier sensing threshold which affects the access opportunities of SUs is conventionally regarded as static and treated independently from the resource allocation in the model. In this article, we study jointly the optimization of detection threshold and resource allocation with the goal of maximizing the total downlink capacity of SUs in such CRNs. The optimization problem is formulated considering three sets of variables, i.e., detection threshold, sub-carrier assignment and power allocation, with constraints on the PUs¿ rate loss and the power budget of the CR base station. Two schemes, referred to as offline and online algorithms respectively, are proposed to solve the optimization problem. While the offline algorithm finds the global optimal solution with high complexity, the online algorithm provides a close-to-optimal solution with much lower complexity and realtime capability. The performance of the proposed schemes is evaluated by extensive simulations and compared with the conventional static threshold selection algorithm specified in the IEEE 802.22 standard. This work is supported by the EU FP7 S2EuNet project (247083), the National Nature Science Foundation of China (NSF61121001), Program for New Century Excellent Talents in University (NCET) and the Spanish Ministry of Education

On Green Energy Powered Cognitive Radio Networks
Green energy powered cognitive radio (CR) network is capable of liberating
the wireless access networks from spectral and energy constraints. The
limitation of the spectrum is alleviated by exploiting cognitive networking in
which wireless nodes sense and utilize the spare spectrum for data
communications, while dependence on the traditional unsustainable energy is
assuaged by adopting energy harvesting (EH) through which green energy can be
harnessed to power wireless networks. Green energy powered CR increases the
network availability and thus extends emerging network applications. Designing
green CR networks is challenging. It requires not only the optimization of
dynamic spectrum access but also the optimal utilization of green energy. This
paper surveys the energy efficient cognitive radio techniques and the
optimization of green energy powered wireless networks. Existing works on
energy aware spectrum sensing, management, and sharing are investigated in
detail. The state of the art of the energy efficient CR based wireless access
network is discussed in various aspects such as relay and cooperative radio and
small cells. Envisioning green energy as an important energy resource in the
future, network performance highly depends on the dynamics of the available
spectrum and green energy. As compared with the traditional energy source, the
arrival rate of green energy, which highly depends on the environment of the
energy harvesters, is rather random and intermittent. To optimize and adapt the
usage of green energy according to the opportunistic spectrum availability, we
discuss research challenges in designing cognitive radio networks which are
powered by energy harvesters
Intelligent Wireless Communications Enabled by Cognitive Radio and Machine Learning
The ability to intelligently utilize resources to meet the need of growing
diversity in services and user behavior marks the future of wireless
communication systems. Intelligent wireless communications aims at enabling the
system to perceive and assess the available resources, to autonomously learn to
adapt to the perceived wireless environment, and to reconfigure its operating
mode to maximize the utility of the available resources. The perception
capability and reconfigurability are the essential features of cognitive radio
while modern machine learning techniques project great potential in system
adaptation. In this paper, we discuss the development of the cognitive radio
technology and machine learning techniques and emphasize their roles in
improving spectrum and energy utility of wireless communication systems. We
describe the state-of-the-art of relevant techniques, covering spectrum sensing
and access approaches and powerful machine learning algorithms that enable
spectrum- and energy-efficient communications in dynamic wireless environments.
We also present practical applications of these techniques and identify further
research challenges in cognitive radio and machine learning as applied to the
existing and future wireless communication systems
Dynamic Resource Allocation in Cognitive Radio Networks: A Convex Optimization Perspective
This article provides an overview of the state-of-art results on
communication resource allocation over space, time, and frequency for emerging
cognitive radio (CR) wireless networks. Focusing on the
interference-power/interference-temperature (IT) constraint approach for CRs to
protect primary radio transmissions, many new and challenging problems
regarding the design of CR systems are formulated, and some of the
corresponding solutions are shown to be obtainable by restructuring some
classic results known for traditional (non-CR) wireless networks. It is
demonstrated that convex optimization plays an essential role in solving these
problems, in a both rigorous and efficient way. Promising research directions
on interference management for CR and other related multiuser communication
systems are discussed.Comment: to appear in IEEE Signal Processing Magazine, special issue on convex

Performance Analysis of Wireless Network with Opportunistic Spectrum Sharing via Cognitive Radio Nodes
Cognitive radio (CR) is found to be an emerging key for efficient spectrum
utilization. In this paper, spectrum sharing among service providers with the
help of cognitive radio has been investigated. The technique of spectrum
sharing among service providers to share the licensed spectrum of licensed
service providers in a dynamic manner is considered. The performance of the
wireless network with opportunistic spectrum sharing techniques is analyzed.
Thus, the spectral utilization and efficiency of sensing is increased, the
interference is minimized, and the call blockage is reduced.Comment: 10 Pages, Journal of Electronic Science and Technology, Vol. 10, No.

Intelligent Approaches for Energy-Efficient Resource Allocation in the Cognitive Radio Network
The cognitive radio (CR) is evolved as the promising technology to alleviate the spectrum scarcity issues by allowing the secondary users (SUs) to use the licensed band in an opportunistic manner. Various challenges need to be addressed before the successful deployment of CR technology. This thesis work presents intelligent resource allocation techniques for improving energy efficiency (EE) of low battery powered CR nodes where resources refer to certain important parameters that directly or indirectly affect EE. As far as the primary user (PU) is concerned, the SUs are allowed to transmit on the licensed band until their transmission power would not cause any interference to the primary network. Also, the SUs must use the licensed band efficiently during the PU’s absence. Therefore, the two key factors such as protection to the primary network and throughput above the threshold are important from the PU’s and SUs’ perspective, respectively. In deployment of CR, malicious users may be more active to prevent the CR users from accessing the spectrum or cause unnecessary interference to the both primary and secondary transmission. Considering these aspects, this thesis focuses on developing novel approaches for energy-efficient resource allocation under the constraints of interference to the PR, minimum achievable data rate and maximum transmission power by optimizing the resource parameters such as sensing time and the secondary transmission power with suitably selecting SUs.
Two different domains considered in this thesis are the soft decision fusion (SDF)-based cooperative spectrum sensing CR network (CRN) models without and with the primary user emulation attack (PUEA). An efficient iterative algorithm called iterative Dinkelbach method (IDM) is proposed to maximize EE with suitable SUs in the absence of the attacker. In the proposed approaches, different constraints are evaluated considering the negative impact of the PUE attacker on the secondary transmission while maximizing EE with the PUE attacker. The optimization problem associated with the non-convex constraints is solved by our proposed iterative resource allocation algorithms (novel iterative resource allocation (NIRA) and novel adaptive resource allocation (NARA)) with suitable selection of SUs for jointly optimizing the sensing time and power allocation. In the CR enhanced vehicular ad hoc network (CR-VANET), the time varying channel responses with the vehicular movement are considered without and with the attacker. In the absence of the PUE attacker, an interference-aware power allocation scheme based on normalized least mean square (NLMS) algorithm is proposed to maximize EE considering the dynamic constraints. In the presence of the attacker, the optimization problem associated with the non-convex and time-varying constraints is solved by an efficient approach based on genetic algorithm (GA). Further, an investigation is attempted to apply the CR technology in industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) band through spectrum occupancy prediction, sub-band selection and optimal power allocation to the CR users using the real time indoor measurement data. Efficacies of the proposed approaches are verified through extensive simulation studies in the MATLAB environment and by comparing with the existing literature. Further, the impacts of different network parameters on the system performance are analyzed in detail. The proposed approaches will be highly helpful in designing energy-efficient CRN model with low complexity for future CR deployment

On Scalable Video Streaming over Cognitive Radio Cellular and Ad Hoc Networks
Video content delivery over wireless networks is expected to grow drastically
in the coming years. In this paper, we investigate the challenging problem of
video over cognitive radio (CR) networks. Although having high potential, this
problem brings about a new level of technical challenges. After reviewing
related work, we first address the problem of video over infrastructure-based
CR networks, and then extend the problem to video over non-infrastructure-based
ad hoc CR networks. We present formulations of cross-layer optimization
problems as well as effective algorithms to solving the problems. The proposed
algorithms are analyzed with respect to their optimality and validate with

Cellular-Base-Station Assisted Device-to-Device Communications in TV White Space
This paper presents a systematic approach to exploit TV white space (TVWS)
for device-to-device (D2D) communications with the aid of the existing cellular
infrastructure. The goal is to build a location-specific TVWS database, which
provides a look-up table service for any D2D link to determine its maximum
permitted emission power (MPEP) in an unlicensed digital TV (DTV) band. To
achieve this goal, the idea of mobile crowd sensing is firstly introduced to
collect active spectrum measurements from massive personal mobile devices.
Considering the incompleteness of crowd measurements, we formulate the problem
of unknown measurements recovery as a matrix completion problem and apply a
powerful fixed point continuation algorithm to reconstruct the unknown elements
from the known elements. By joint exploitation of the big spectrum data in its
vicinity, each cellular base station further implements a nonlinear support
vector machine algorithm to perform irregular coverage boundary detection of a
licensed DTV transmitter. With the knowledge of the detected coverage boundary,
an opportunistic spatial reuse algorithm is developed for each D2D link to
determine its MPEP. Simulation results show that the proposed approach can
successfully enable D2D communications in TVWS while satisfying the
interference constraint from the licensed DTV services. In addition, to our
best knowledge, this is the first try to explore and exploit TVWS inside the
DTV protection region resulted from the shadowing effect. Potential application
scenarios include communications between internet of vehicles in the
underground parking, D2D communications in hotspots such as subway, game
stadiums, and airports, etc.Comment: Accepted by IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications, to

Dynamic Profit Maximization of Cognitive Mobile Virtual Network Operator
We study the profit maximization problem of a cognitive virtual network
operator in a dynamic network environment. We consider a downlink OFDM
communication system with various network dynamics, including dynamic user
demands, uncertain sensing spectrum resources, dynamic spectrum prices, and
time-varying channel conditions. In addition, heterogenous users and imperfect
sensing technology are incorporated to make the network model more realistic.
By exploring the special structural of the problem, we develop a low-complexity
on-line control policies that determine pricing and resource scheduling without
knowing the statistics of dynamic network parameters. We show that the proposed
algorithms can achieve arbitrarily close to the optimal profit with a proper
trade-off with the queuing delay
