    Real-time video-plus-depth content creation utilizing time-of-flight sensor - from capture to display

    Recent developments in 3D camera technologies, display technologies and other related fields have been aiming to provide 3D experience for home user and establish services such as Three-Dimensional Television (3DTV) and Free-Viewpoint Television (FTV). Emerging multiview autostereoscopic displays do not require any eyewear and can be watched by multiple users at the same time, thus are very attractive for home environment usage. To provide a natural 3D impression, autostereoscopic 3D displays have been design to synthesize multi-perspective virtual views of a scene using Depth-Image-Based Rendering (DIBR) techniques. One key issue of DIBR is that scene depth information in a form of a depth map is required in order to synthesize virtual views. Acquiring this information is quite complex and challenging task and still an active research topic. In this thesis, the problem of dynamic 3D video content creation of real-world visual scenes is addressed. The work assumed data acquisition setting including Time-of-Flight (ToF) depth sensor and a single conventional video camera. The main objective of the work is to develop efficient algorithms for the stages of synchronous data acquisition, color and ToF data fusion, and final view-plus-depth frame formatting and rendering. The outcome of this thesis is a prototype 3DTV system capable for rendering live 3D video on a 3D autostereoscopic display. The presented system makes extensive use of the processing capabilities of modern Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) in order to achieve real-time processing rates while providing an acceptable visual quality. Furthermore, the issue of arbitrary view synthesis is investigated in the context of DIBR and a novel approach based on depth layering is proposed. The proposed approach is applicable for general virtual views synthesis, i.e. in terms of different camera parameters such as position, orientation, focal length and varying sensors spatial resolutions. The experimental results demonstrate real-time capability of the proposed method even for CPU-based implementations. It compares favorably to other view synthesis methods in terms of visual quality, while being more computationally efficient

    Internet of Underwater Things and Big Marine Data Analytics -- A Comprehensive Survey

    The Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT) is an emerging communication ecosystem developed for connecting underwater objects in maritime and underwater environments. The IoUT technology is intricately linked with intelligent boats and ships, smart shores and oceans, automatic marine transportations, positioning and navigation, underwater exploration, disaster prediction and prevention, as well as with intelligent monitoring and security. The IoUT has an influence at various scales ranging from a small scientific observatory, to a midsized harbor, and to covering global oceanic trade. The network architecture of IoUT is intrinsically heterogeneous and should be sufficiently resilient to operate in harsh environments. This creates major challenges in terms of underwater communications, whilst relying on limited energy resources. Additionally, the volume, velocity, and variety of data produced by sensors, hydrophones, and cameras in IoUT is enormous, giving rise to the concept of Big Marine Data (BMD), which has its own processing challenges. Hence, conventional data processing techniques will falter, and bespoke Machine Learning (ML) solutions have to be employed for automatically learning the specific BMD behavior and features facilitating knowledge extraction and decision support. The motivation of this paper is to comprehensively survey the IoUT, BMD, and their synthesis. It also aims for exploring the nexus of BMD with ML. We set out from underwater data collection and then discuss the family of IoUT data communication techniques with an emphasis on the state-of-the-art research challenges. We then review the suite of ML solutions suitable for BMD handling and analytics.     FULL 3D RECONSTRUCTION OF DYNAMIC NON-RIGID SCENES: ACQUISITION AND ENHANCEMENT

    Recent advances in commodity depth or 3D sensing technologies have enabled us to move closer to the goal of accurately sensing and modeling the 3D representations of complex dynamic scenes. Indeed, in domains such as virtual reality, security, surveillance and e-health, there is now a greater demand for aff ordable and flexible vision systems which are capable of acquiring high quality 3D reconstructions. Available commodity RGB-D cameras, though easily accessible, have limited fi eld-of-view, and acquire noisy and low-resolution measurements which restricts their direct usage in building such vision systems. This thesis targets these limitations and builds approaches around commodity 3D sensing technologies to acquire noise-free and feature preserving full 3D reconstructions of dynamic scenes containing, static or moving, rigid or non-rigid objects. A mono-view system based on a single RGB-D camera is incapable of acquiring full 360 degrees 3D reconstruction of a dynamic scene instantaneously. For this purpose, a multi-view system composed of several RGB-D cameras covering the whole scene is used. In the first part of this thesis, the domain of correctly aligning the information acquired from RGB-D cameras in a multi-view system to provide full and textured 3D reconstructions of dynamic scenes, instantaneously, is explored. This is achieved by solving the extrinsic calibration problem. This thesis proposes an extrinsic calibration framework which uses the 2D photometric and 3D geometric information, acquired with RGB-D cameras, according to their relative (in)accuracies, a ffected by the presence of noise, in a single weighted bi-objective optimization. An iterative scheme is also proposed, which estimates the parameters of noise model aff ecting both 2D and 3D measurements, and solves the extrinsic calibration problem simultaneously. Results show improvement in calibration accuracy as compared to state-of-art methods. In the second part of this thesis, the domain of enhancement of noisy and low-resolution 3D data acquired with commodity RGB-D cameras in both mono-view and multi-view systems is explored. This thesis extends the state-of-art in mono-view template-free recursive 3D data enhancement which targets dynamic scenes containing rigid-objects, and thus requires tracking only the global motions of those objects for view-dependent surface representation and fi ltering. This thesis proposes to target dynamic scenes containing non-rigid objects which introduces the complex requirements of tracking relatively large local motions and maintaining data organization for view-dependent surface representation. The proposed method is shown to be e ffective in handling non-rigid objects of changing topologies. Building upon the previous work, this thesis overcomes the requirement of data organization by proposing an approach based on view-independent surface representation. View-independence decreases the complexity of the proposed algorithm and allows it the flexibility to process and enhance noisy data, acquired with multiple cameras in a multi-view system, simultaneously. Moreover, qualitative and quantitative experimental analysis shows this method to be more accurate in removing noise to produce enhanced 3D reconstructions of non-rigid objects. Although, extending this method to a multi-view system would allow for obtaining instantaneous enhanced full 360 degrees 3D reconstructions of non-rigid objects, it still lacks the ability to explicitly handle low-resolution data. Therefore, this thesis proposes a novel recursive dynamic multi-frame 3D super-resolution algorithm together with a novel 3D bilateral total variation regularization to filter out the noise, recover details and enhance the resolution of data acquired from commodity cameras in a multi-view system. Results show that this method is able to build accurate, smooth and feature preserving full 360 degrees 3D reconstructions of the dynamic scenes containing non-rigid objects

    Fruit Detection and Tree Segmentation for Yield Mapping in Orchards

    Accurate information gathering and processing is critical for precision horticulture, as growers aim to optimise their farm management practices. An accurate inventory of the crop that details its spatial distribution along with health and maturity, can help farmers efficiently target processes such as chemical and fertiliser spraying, crop thinning, harvest management, labour planning and marketing. Growers have traditionally obtained this information by using manual sampling techniques, which tend to be labour intensive, spatially sparse, expensive, inaccurate and prone to subjective biases. Recent advances in sensing and automation for field robotics allow for key measurements to be made for individual plants throughout an orchard in a timely and accurate manner. Farmer operated machines or unmanned robotic platforms can be equipped with a range of sensors to capture a detailed representation over large areas. Robust and accurate data processing techniques are therefore required to extract high level information needed by the grower to support precision farming. This thesis focuses on yield mapping in orchards using image and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data captured using an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV). The contribution is the framework and algorithmic components for orchard mapping and yield estimation that is applicable to different fruit types and orchard configurations. The framework includes detection of fruits in individual images and tracking them over subsequent frames. The fruit counts are then associated to individual trees, which are segmented from image and LiDAR data, resulting in a structured spatial representation of yield. The first contribution of this thesis is the development of a generic and robust fruit detection algorithm. Images captured in the outdoor environment are susceptible to highly variable external factors that lead to significant appearance variations. Specifically in orchards, variability is caused by changes in illumination, target pose, tree types, etc. The proposed techniques address these issues by using state-of-the-art feature learning approaches for image classification, while investigating the utility of orchard domain knowledge for fruit detection. Detection is performed using both pixel-wise classification of images followed instance segmentation, and bounding-box regression approaches. The experimental results illustrate the versatility of complex deep learning approaches over a multitude of fruit types. The second contribution of this thesis is a tree segmentation approach to detect the individual trees that serve as a standard unit for structured orchard information systems. The work focuses on trellised trees, which present unique challenges for segmentation algorithms due to their intertwined nature. LiDAR data are used to segment the trellis face, and to generate proposals for individual trees trunks. Additional trunk proposals are provided using pixel-wise classification of the image data. The multi-modal observations are fine-tuned by modelling trunk locations using a hidden semi-Markov model (HSMM), within which prior knowledge of tree spacing is incorporated. The final component of this thesis addresses the visual occlusion of fruit within geometrically complex canopies by using a multi-view detection and tracking approach. Single image fruit detections are tracked over a sequence of images, and associated to individual trees or farm rows, with the spatial distribution of the fruit counting forming a yield map over the farm. The results show the advantage of using multi-view imagery (instead of single view analysis) for fruit counting and yield mapping. This thesis includes extensive experimentation in almond, apple and mango orchards, with data captured by a UGV spanning a total of 5 hectares of farm area, over 30 km of vehicle traversal and more than 7,000 trees. The validation of the different processes is performed using manual annotations, which includes fruit and tree locations in image and LiDAR data respectively. Additional evaluation of yield mapping is performed by comparison against fruit counts on trees at the farm and counts made by the growers post-harvest. The framework developed in this thesis is demonstrated to be accurate compared to ground truth at all scales of the pipeline, including fruit detection and tree mapping, leading to accurate yield estimation, per tree and per row, for the different crops. Through the multitude of field experiments conducted over multiple seasons and years, the thesis presents key practical insights necessary for commercial development of an information gathering system in orchards

    Sensing physical fields: Inverse problems for the diffusion equation and beyond

    Due to significant advances made over the last few decades in the areas of (wireless) networking, communications and microprocessor fabrication, the use of sensor networks to observe physical phenomena is rapidly becoming commonplace. Over this period, many aspects of sensor networks have been explored, yet a thorough understanding of how to analyse and process the vast amounts of sensor data collected, remains an open area of research. This work therefore, aims to provide theoretical, as well as practical, advances this area. In particular, we consider the problem of inferring certain underlying properties of the monitored phenomena, from our sensor measurements. Within mathematics, this is commonly formulated as an inverse problem; whereas in signal processing it appears as a (multidimensional) sampling and reconstruction problem. Indeed it is well known that inverse problems are notoriously ill-posed and very demanding to solve; meanwhile viewing it as the latter also presents several technical challenges. In particular, the monitored field is usually nonbandlimited, the sensor placement is typically non-regular and the space-time dimensions of the field are generally non-homogeneous. Furthermore, although sensor production is a very advanced domain, it is near impossible and/or extremely costly to design sensors with no measurement noise. These challenges therefore motivate the need for a stable, noise robust, yet simple sampling theory for the problem at hand. In our work, we narrow the gap between the domains of inverse problems and modern sampling theory, and in so doing, extend existing results by introducing a framework for solving the inverse source problems for a class of some well-known physical phenomena. Some examples include: the reconstruction of plume sources, thermal monitoring of multi-core processors and acoustic source estimation, to name a few. We assume these phenomena and their sources can be described using partial differential equation (PDE) and parametric source models, respectively. Under this assumption, we obtain a well-posed inverse problem. Initially, we consider a phenomena governed by the two-dimensional diffusion equation -- i.e. 2-D diffusion fields, and assume that we have access to its continuous field measurements. In this setup, we derive novel exact closed-form inverse formulae that solve the inverse diffusion source problem, for a class of localized and non-localized source models. In our derivation, we prove that a particular 1-D sequence of, so called, generalized measurements of the field is governed by a power-sum series, hence it can be efficiently solved using existing algebraic methods such as Prony's method. Next, we show how to obtain these generalized measurements, by using Green's second identity to combine the continuous diffusion field with a family of well-chosen sensing functions. From these new inverse formulae, we therefore develop novel noise robust centralized and distributed reconstruction methods for diffusion fields. Specifically, we extend these inverse formulae to centralized sensor networks using numerical quadrature; conversely for distributed networks, we propose a new physics-driven consensus scheme to approximate the generalized measurements through localized interactions between the sensor nodes. Finally we provide numerical results using both synthetic and real data to validate the proposed algorithms. Given the insights gained, we eventually turn to the more general problem. That is, the two- and three-dimensional inverse source problems for any linear PDE with constant coefficients. Extending the previous framework, we solve the new class of inverse problems by establishing an otherwise subtle link with modern sampling theory. We achieved this by showing that, the desired generalized measurements can be computed by taking linear weighted-sums of the sensor measurements. The advantage of this is two-fold. First, we obtain a more flexible framework that permits the use of more general sensing functions, this freedom is important for solving the 3-D problem. Second, and remarkably, we are able to analyse many more physical phenomena beyond diffusion fields. We prove that computing the proper sequence of generalized measurements for any such field, via linear sums, reduces to approximating (a family of) exponentials with translates of a particular prototype function. We show that this prototype function depends on the Green's function of the field, and then derive an explicit formula to evaluate the proper weights. Furthermore, since we now have more freedom in selecting the sensing functions, we discuss how to make the correct choice whilst emphasizing how to retrieve the unknown source parameters from the resulting (multidimensional) Prony-like systems. Based on this new theory we develop practical, noise robust, sensor network strategies for solving the inverse source problem, and then present numerical simulation results to verify the performance of our proposed schemes.Open Acces

    Methods for Light Field Display Profiling and Scalable Super-Multiview Video Coding

    Light field 3D displays reproduce the light field of real or synthetic scenes, as observed by multiple viewers, without the necessity of wearing 3D glasses. Reproducing light fields is a technically challenging task in terms of optical setup, content creation, distributed rendering, among others; however, the impressive visual quality of hologramlike scenes, in full color, with real-time frame rates, and over a very wide field of view justifies the complexity involved. Seeing objects popping far out from the screen plane without glasses impresses even those viewers who have experienced other 3D displays before.Content for these displays can either be synthetic or real. The creation of synthetic (rendered) content is relatively well understood and used in practice. Depending on the technique used, rendering has its own complexities, quite similar to the complexity of rendering techniques for 2D displays. While rendering can be used in many use-cases, the holy grail of all 3D display technologies is to become the future 3DTVs, ending up in each living room and showing realistic 3D content without glasses. Capturing, transmitting, and rendering live scenes as light fields is extremely challenging, and it is necessary if we are about to experience light field 3D television showing real people and natural scenes, or realistic 3D video conferencing with real eye-contact.In order to provide the required realism, light field displays aim to provide a wide field of view (up to 180°), while reproducing up to ~80 MPixels nowadays. Building gigapixel light field displays is realistic in the next few years. Likewise, capturing live light fields involves using many synchronized cameras that cover the same display wide field of view and provide the same high pixel count. Therefore, light field capture and content creation has to be well optimized with respect to the targeted display technologies. Two major challenges in this process are addressed in this dissertation.The first challenge is how to characterize the display in terms of its capabilities to create light fields, that is how to profile the display in question. In clearer terms this boils down to finding the equivalent spatial resolution, which is similar to the screen resolution of 2D displays, and angular resolution, which describes the smallest angle, the color of which the display can control individually. Light field is formalized as 4D approximation of the plenoptic function in terms of geometrical optics through spatiallylocalized and angularly-directed light rays in the so-called ray space. Plenoptic Sampling Theory provides the required conditions to sample and reconstruct light fields. Subsequently, light field displays can be characterized in the Fourier domain by the effective display bandwidth they support. In the thesis, a methodology for displayspecific light field analysis is proposed. It regards the display as a signal processing channel and analyses it as such in spectral domain. As a result, one is able to derive the display throughput (i.e. the display bandwidth) and, subsequently, the optimal camera configuration to efficiently capture and filter light fields before displaying them.While the geometrical topology of optical light sources in projection-based light field displays can be used to theoretically derive display bandwidth, and its spatial and angular resolution, in many cases this topology is not available to the user. Furthermore, there are many implementation details which cause the display to deviate from its theoretical model. In such cases, profiling light field displays in terms of spatial and angular resolution has to be done by measurements. Measurement methods that involve the display showing specific test patterns, which are then captured by a single static or moving camera, are proposed in the thesis. Determining the effective spatial and angular resolution of a light field display is then based on an automated analysis of the captured images, as they are reproduced by the display, in the frequency domain. The analysis reveals the empirical limits of the display in terms of pass-band both in the spatial and angular dimension. Furthermore, the spatial resolution measurements are validated by subjective tests confirming that the results are in line with the smallest features human observers can perceive on the same display. The resolution values obtained can be used to design the optimal capture setup for the display in question.The second challenge is related with the massive number of views and pixels captured that have to be transmitted to the display. It clearly requires effective and efficient compression techniques to fit in the bandwidth available, as an uncompressed representation of such a super-multiview video could easily consume ~20 gigabits per second with today’s displays. Due to the high number of light rays to be captured, transmitted and rendered, distributed systems are necessary for both capturing and rendering the light field. During the first attempts to implement real-time light field capturing, transmission and rendering using a brute force approach, limitations became apparent. Still, due to the best possible image quality achievable with dense multi-camera light field capturing and light ray interpolation, this approach was chosen as the basis of further work, despite the massive amount of bandwidth needed. Decompression of all camera images in all rendering nodes, however, is prohibitively time consuming and is not scalable. After analyzing the light field interpolation process and the data-access patterns typical in a distributed light field rendering system, an approach to reduce the amount of data required in the rendering nodes has been proposed. This approach, on the other hand, requires rectangular parts (typically vertical bars in case of a Horizontal Parallax Only light field display) of the captured images to be available in the rendering nodes, which might be exploited to reduce the time spent with decompression of video streams. However, partial decoding is not readily supported by common image / video codecs. In the thesis, approaches aimed at achieving partial decoding are proposed for H.264, HEVC, JPEG and JPEG2000 and the results are compared.The results of the thesis on display profiling facilitate the design of optimal camera setups for capturing scenes to be reproduced on 3D light field displays. The developed super-multiview content encoding also facilitates light field rendering in real-time. This makes live light field transmission and real-time teleconferencing possible in a scalable way, using any number of cameras, and at the spatial and angular resolution the display actually needs for achieving a compelling visual experience
