Receiver Architectures for MIMO-OFDM Based on a Combined VMP-SP Algorithm
Iterative information processing, either based on heuristics or analytical
frameworks, has been shown to be a very powerful tool for the design of
efficient, yet feasible, wireless receiver architectures. Within this context,
algorithms performing message-passing on a probabilistic graph, such as the
sum-product (SP) and variational message passing (VMP) algorithms, have become
increasingly popular.
In this contribution, we apply a combined VMP-SP message-passing technique to
the design of receivers for MIMO-ODFM systems. The message-passing equations of
the combined scheme can be obtained from the equations of the stationary points
of a constrained region-based free energy approximation. When applied to a
MIMO-OFDM probabilistic model, we obtain a generic receiver architecture
performing iterative channel weight and noise precision estimation,
equalization and data decoding. We show that this generic scheme can be
particularized to a variety of different receiver structures, ranging from
high-performance iterative structures to low complexity receivers. This allows
for a flexible design of the signal processing specially tailored for the
requirements of each specific application. The numerical assessment of our
solutions, based on Monte Carlo simulations, corroborates the high performance
of the proposed algorithms and their superiority to heuristic approaches
High-Rate Space-Time Coded Large MIMO Systems: Low-Complexity Detection and Channel Estimation
In this paper, we present a low-complexity algorithm for detection in
high-rate, non-orthogonal space-time block coded (STBC) large-MIMO systems that
achieve high spectral efficiencies of the order of tens of bps/Hz. We also
present a training-based iterative detection/channel estimation scheme for such
large STBC MIMO systems. Our simulation results show that excellent bit error
rate and nearness-to-capacity performance are achieved by the proposed
multistage likelihood ascent search (M-LAS) detector in conjunction with the
proposed iterative detection/channel estimation scheme at low complexities. The
fact that we could show such good results for large STBCs like 16x16 and 32x32
STBCs from Cyclic Division Algebras (CDA) operating at spectral efficiencies in
excess of 20 bps/Hz (even after accounting for the overheads meant for pilot
based training for channel estimation and turbo coding) establishes the
effectiveness of the proposed detector and channel estimator. We decode perfect
codes of large dimensions using the proposed detector. With the feasibility of
such a low-complexity detection/channel estimation scheme, large-MIMO systems
with tens of antennas operating at several tens of bps/Hz spectral efficiencies
can become practical, enabling interesting high data rate wireless
applications.Comment: v3: Performance/complexity comparison of the proposed scheme with
other large-MIMO architectures/detectors has been added (Sec. IV-D). The

Turbo receivers for interleave-division multiple-access systems
In this paper several turbo receivers for Interleave-Division Multiple-Access (IDMA) systems will be discussed. The multiple access system model is presented first. The optimal, Maximum A Posteriori (MAP) algorithm, is then presented. It will be shown that the use of a precoding technique at the emitter side is applicable to IDMA systems. Several low complexity Multi-User Detector (MUD), based on the Gaussian approximation, will be next discussed. It will be shown that the MUD with Probabilistic Data Association (PDA) algorithm provides faster convergence of the turbo receiver. The discussed turbo receivers will be evaluated by means of Bit Error Rate (BER) simulations and EXtrinsic Information Transfer (EXIT) charts
Merging Belief Propagation and the Mean Field Approximation: A Free Energy Approach
We present a joint message passing approach that combines belief propagation
and the mean field approximation. Our analysis is based on the region-based
free energy approximation method proposed by Yedidia et al. We show that the
message passing fixed-point equations obtained with this combination correspond
to stationary points of a constrained region-based free energy approximation.
Moreover, we present a convergent implementation of these message passing
fixedpoint equations provided that the underlying factor graph fulfills certain
technical conditions. In addition, we show how to include hard constraints in
the part of the factor graph corresponding to belief propagation. Finally, we
demonstrate an application of our method to iterative channel estimation and
decoding in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system
Two-tier channel estimation aided near-capacity MIMO transceivers relying on norm-based joint transmit and receive antenna selection
We propose a norm-based joint transmit and receive antenna selection (NBJTRAS) aided near-capacity multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system relying on the assistance of a novel two-tier channel estimation scheme. Specifically, a rough estimate of the full MIMO channel is first generated using a low-complexity, low-training-overhead minimum mean square error based channel estimator, which relies on reusing a modest number of radio frequency (RF) chains. NBJTRAS is then carried out based on this initial full MIMO channel estimate. The NBJTRAS aided MIMO system is capable of significantly outperforming conventional MIMO systems equipped with the same modest number of RF chains, while dispensing with the idealised simplifying assumption of having perfectly known channel state information (CSI). Moreover, the initial subset channel estimate associated with the selected subset MIMO channel matrix is then used for activating a powerful semi-blind joint channel estimation and turbo detector-decoder, in which the channel estimate is refined by a novel block-of-bits selection based soft-decision aided channel estimator (BBSB-SDACE) embedded in the iterative detection and decoding process. The joint channel estimation and turbo detection-decoding scheme operating with the aid of the proposed BBSB-SDACE channel estimator is capable of approaching the performance of the near-capacity maximumlikelihood (ML) turbo transceiver associated with perfect CSI. This is achieved without increasing the complexity of the ML turbo detection and decoding process
Reciprocity Calibration for Massive MIMO: Proposal, Modeling and Validation
This paper presents a mutual coupling based calibration method for
time-division-duplex massive MIMO systems, which enables downlink precoding
based on uplink channel estimates. The entire calibration procedure is carried
out solely at the base station (BS) side by sounding all BS antenna pairs. An
Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm is derived, which processes the
measured channels in order to estimate calibration coefficients. The EM
algorithm outperforms current state-of-the-art narrow-band calibration schemes
in a mean squared error (MSE) and sum-rate capacity sense. Like its
predecessors, the EM algorithm is general in the sense that it is not only
suitable to calibrate a co-located massive MIMO BS, but also very suitable for
calibrating multiple BSs in distributed MIMO systems.
The proposed method is validated with experimental evidence obtained from a
massive MIMO testbed. In addition, we address the estimated narrow-band
calibration coefficients as a stochastic process across frequency, and study
the subspace of this process based on measurement data. With the insights of
this study, we propose an estimator which exploits the structure of the process
in order to reduce the calibration error across frequency. A model for the
calibration error is also proposed based on the asymptotic properties of the
estimator, and is validated with measurement results.Comment: Submitted to IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications,

Effects of channel estimation on multiuser virtual MIMO-OFDMA relay-based networks
A practical multiuser cooperative transmission scheme denoted as Virtual Maximum Ratio Transmission (VMRT) for multiple-input multiple-output-orthogonal frequency division multiple access (MIMO-OFDMA) relay-based networks is proposed and evaluated in the presence of a realistic channel estimation algorithm and using low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. It is shown that this scheme is robust against channel estimation errors. It offers diversity and array gain, keeping the complexity low with a multiuser and multiantenna channel estimation algorithm that is simple and efficient. In addition, the combination with LDPC codes provides improved gains; diversity gains larger than 6 dB can be easily obtained with a reduced number of relays. Thus, this scheme can be used to extend coverage or increase system throughput by using simple cooperative OFDMA-based relays. The authors would like to thank Jae-Yun Ko for his valuable
