    Neural Spectro-polarimetric Fields

    Modeling the spatial radiance distribution of light rays in a scene has been extensively explored for applications, including view synthesis. Spectrum and polarization, the wave properties of light, are often neglected due to their integration into three RGB spectral bands and their non-perceptibility to human vision. Despite this, these properties encompass substantial material and geometric information about a scene. In this work, we propose to model spectro-polarimetric fields, the spatial Stokes-vector distribution of any light ray at an arbitrary wavelength. We present Neural Spectro-polarimetric Fields (NeSpoF), a neural representation that models the physically-valid Stokes vector at given continuous variables of position, direction, and wavelength. NeSpoF manages inherently noisy raw measurements, showcases memory efficiency, and preserves physically vital signals, factors that are crucial for representing the high-dimensional signal of a spectro-polarimetric field. To validate NeSpoF, we introduce the first multi-view hyperspectral-polarimetric image dataset, comprised of both synthetic and real-world scenes. These were captured using our compact hyperspectral-polarimetric imaging system, which has been calibrated for robustness against system imperfections. The multi-sensor fusion methods are widely used in many applications, such as autonomous systems, remote sensing, video surveillance, and the military. These methods can obtain the complementary properties of targets by considering multiple sensors. On the other hand, they can achieve a detailed environment description and accurate detection of interest targets based on the information from different sensors.This book collects novel developments in the field of multi-sensor, multi-source, and multi-process information fusion. Articles are expected to emphasize one or more of the three facets: architectures, algorithms, and applications. Published papers dealing with fundamental theoretical analyses, as well as those demonstrating their application to real-world problems

    Deep learning-based change detection in remote sensing images:a review

    Images gathered from different satellites are vastly available these days due to the fast development of remote sensing (RS) technology. These images significantly enhance the data sources of change detection (CD). CD is a technique of recognizing the dissimilarities in the images acquired at distinct intervals and are used for numerous applications, such as urban area development, disaster management, land cover object identification, etc. In recent years, deep learning (DL) techniques have been used tremendously in change detection processes, where it has achieved great success because of their practical applications. Some researchers have even claimed that DL approaches outperform traditional approaches and enhance change detection accuracy. Therefore, this review focuses on deep learning techniques, such as supervised, unsupervised, and semi-supervised for different change detection datasets, such as SAR, multispectral, hyperspectral, VHR, and heterogeneous images, and their advantages and disadvantages will be highlighted. In the end, some significant challenges are discussed to understand the context of improvements in change detection datasets and deep learning models. Overall, this review will be beneficial for the future development of CD methods

    Food Tray Sealing Fault Detection in Multi-Spectral Images Using Data Fusion and Deep Learning Techniques

    A correct food tray sealing is required to preserve food properties and safety for consumers. Traditional food packaging inspections are made by human operators to detect seal defects. Recent advances in the field of food inspection have been related to the use of hyperspectral imaging technology and automated vision-based inspection systems. A deep learning-based approach for food tray sealing fault detection using hyperspectral images is described. Several pixel-based image fusion methods are proposed to obtain 2D images from the 3D hyperspectral image datacube, which feeds the deep learning (DL) algorithms. Instead of considering all spectral bands in region of interest around a contaminated or faulty seal area, only relevant bands are selected using data fusion. These techniques greatly improve the computation time while maintaining a high classification ratio, showing that the fused image contains enough information for checking a food tray sealing state (faulty or normal), avoiding feeding a large image datacube to the DL algorithms. Additionally, the proposed DL algorithms do not require any prior handcraft approach, i.e., no manual tuning of the parameters in the algorithms are required since the training process adjusts the algorithm. The experimental results, validated using an industrial dataset for food trays, along with different deep learning methods, demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. In the studied dataset, an accuracy of 88.7%, 88.3%, 89.3%, and 90.1% was achieved for Deep Belief Network (DBN), Extreme Learning Machine (ELM), Stacked Auto Encoder (SAE), and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), respectively

    Advanced sparse optimization algorithms for interferometric imaging inverse problems in astronomy

    In the quest to produce images of the sky at unprecedented resolution with high sensitivity, new generation of astronomical interferometers have been designed. To meet the sensing capabilities of these instruments, techniques aiming to recover the sought images from the incompletely sampled Fourier domain measurements need to be reinvented. This goes hand-in-hand with the necessity to calibrate the measurement modulating unknown effects, which adversely affect the image quality, limiting its dynamic range. The contribution of this thesis consists in the development of advanced optimization techniques tailored to address these issues, ranging from radio interferometry (RI) to optical interferometry (OI). In the context of RI, we propose a novel convex optimization approach for full polarization imaging relying on sparsity-promoting regularizations. Unlike standard RI imaging algorithms, our method jointly solves for the Stokes images by enforcing the polarization constraint, which imposes a physical dependency between the images. These priors are shown to enhance the imaging quality via various performed numerical studies. The proposed imaging approach also benefits from its scalability to handle the huge amounts of data expected from the new instruments. When it comes to deal with the critical and challenging issues of the direction-dependent effects calibration, we further propose a non-convex optimization technique that unifies calibration and imaging steps in a global framework, in which we adapt the earlier developed imaging method for the imaging step. In contrast to existing RI calibration modalities, our method benefits from well-established convergence guarantees even in the non-convex setting considered in this work and its efficiency is demonstrated through several numerical experiments. Last but not least, inspired by the performance of these methodologies and drawing ideas from them, we aim to solve image recovery problem in OI that poses its own set of challenges primarily due to the partial loss of phase information. To this end, we propose a sparsity regularized non-convex optimization algorithm that is equipped with convergence guarantees and is adaptable to both monochromatic and hyperspectral OI imaging.     The first objective of the thesis is to investigate the problem of reconstructing a small-scale object (a few millimeters or smaller) in 3D. In Chapter 3, we show how this problem can be solved effectively by a new multifocus multiview 3D reconstruction procedure which includes a new Fixed-Lens multifocus image capture and a calibrated image registration technique using analytic homography transformation. The experimental results using the real and synthetic images demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed solutions by showing that both the fixed-lens image capture and multifocus stacking with calibrated image alignment significantly reduce the errors in the camera poses and produce more complete 3D reconstructed models as compared with those by the conventional moving lens image capture and multifocus stacking. The second objective of the thesis is modelling the dual-pixel (DP) camera. In Chapter 4, to understand the potential of the DP sensor for computer vision applications, we study the formation of the DP pair which links the blur and the depth information. A mathematical DP model is proposed which can benefit depth estimation by the blur. These explorations motivate us to propose an end-to-end DDDNet (DP-based Depth and Deblur Network) to jointly estimate the depth and restore the image . Moreover, we define a reblur loss, which reflects the relationship of the DP image formation process with depth information, to regularize our depth estimate in training. To meet the requirement of a large amount of data for learning, we propose the first DP image simulator which allows us to create datasets with DP pairs from any existing RGBD dataset. As a side contribution, we collect a real dataset for further research. Extensive experimental evaluation on both synthetic and real datasets shows that our approach achieves competitive performance compared to state-of-the-art approaches. Another (third) objective of this thesis is to tackle the multifocus image fusion problem, particularly for long multifocus image sequences. Multifocus image stacking/fusion produces an in-focus image of a scene from a number of partially focused images of that scene in order to extend the depth of field. One of the limitations of the current state of the art multifocus fusion methods is not considering image registration/alignment before fusion. Consequently, fusing unregistered multifocus images produces an in-focus image containing misalignment artefacts. In Chapter 5, we propose image registration by projective transformation before fusion to remove the misalignment artefacts. We also propose a method based on 3D deconvolution to retrieve the in-focus image by formulating the multifocus image fusion problem as a 3D deconvolution problem. The proposed method achieves superior performance compared to the state of the art methods. It is also shown that, the proposed projective transformation for image registration can improve the quality of the fused images. Moreover, we implement a multifocus simulator to generate synthetic multifocus data from any RGB-D dataset. The fourth objective of this thesis is to explore new ways to detect the polarization state of light. To achieve the objective, in Chapter 6, we investigate a new optical filter namely optical rotation filter for detecting the polarization state with a fewer number of images. The proposed method can estimate polarization state using two images, one with the filter and another without. The accuracy of estimating the polarization parameters using the proposed method is almost similar to that of the existing state of the art method. In addition, the feasibility of detecting the polarization state using only one RGB image captured with the optical rotation filter is also demonstrated by estimating the image without the filter from the image with the filter using a generative adversarial network

    A CNN-based fusion method for feature extraction from sentinel data

    Sensitivity to weather conditions, and specially to clouds, is a severe limiting factor to the use of optical remote sensing for Earth monitoring applications. A possible alternative is to benefit from weather-insensitive synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. In many real-world applications, critical decisions are made based on some informative optical or radar features related to items such as water, vegetation or soil. Under cloudy conditions, however, optical-based features are not available, and they are commonly reconstructed through linear interpolation between data available at temporally-close time instants. In this work, we propose to estimate missing optical features through data fusion and deep-learning. Several sources of information are taken into account—optical sequences, SAR sequences, digital elevation model—so as to exploit both temporal and cross-sensor dependencies. Based on these data and a tiny cloud-free fraction of the target image, a compact convolutional neural network (CNN) is trained to perform the desired estimation. To validate the proposed approach, we focus on the estimation of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), using coupled Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 time-series acquired over an agricultural region of Burkina Faso from May–November 2016. Several fusion schemes are considered, causal and non-causal, single-sensor or joint-sensor, corresponding to different operating conditions. Experimental results are very promising, showing a significant gain over baseline methods according to all performance indicators
