Throughput optimization in MPR-capable multi-hop wireless networks
Recent advances in the physical layer have enabled the simultaneous reception of multiple packets by a node in wireless networks. This capability has the potential of improving the performance of multi-hop wireless networks by a logarithmic factor with respect to current technologies. However, to fully exploit multiple packet reception (MPR) capability, new routing and scheduling schemes must be designed. These schemes need to reformulate a historically underlying assumption in wireless networks which states that any concurrent transmission of two or more packets results in a collision and failure of all packet receptions. In this work, we present a generalized model for the throughput optimization problem in MPR-capable multi-hop wireless networks. The formulation incorporates not only the MPR protocol model to quantify interference, but also the multi-access channel. The former is related with the MAC and routing layers, and considers a packet as the unit of transmission. The latter accounts for the achievable capacity of links used by simultaneous packet transmissions. The problem is modeled as a joint routing and scheduling problem. The scheduling subproblem deals with finding the optimal schedulable sets, which are defined as subsets of links that can be scheduled or activated simultaneously. Among other results, we demonstrate that any solution of the scheduling subproblem can be built with |E| + 1 or fewer schedulable sets, where |E| is the number of links of the network. This result contrasts with a conjecture that states that a solution of the scheduling subproblem, in general, is composed of an exponential number of schedulable sets. The model can be applied to a wide range of networks, such as half and full duplex systems, networks with directional and omni-directional antennas with one or multiple transmit antennas per node. Due to the hardness of the problem, we propose several polynomial time schemes based on a combination of linear programming, approximation algorithm and greedy paradigms. We illustrate the use of the proposed schemes to study the impact of several design parameters such as decoding capability and number of transmit antennas on the performance of MPR-capable networks
Cross-layer schemes for performance optimization in wireless networks
Wireless networks are undergoing rapid progress and inspiring numerous applications. As the application of wireless networks becomes broader, they are expected to not only provide ubiquitous connectivity, but also support end users with certain service guarantees.
End-to-end delay is an important Quality of Service (QoS) metric in multihop wireless networks. This dissertation addresses how to minimize end-to-end delay through joint optimization of network layer routing and link layer scheduling. Two cross-layer schemes, a loosely coupled cross-layer scheme and a tightly coupled cross-layer scheme, are proposed. The two cross-layer schemes involve interference modeling in multihop wireless networks with omnidirectional antenna. In addition, based on the interference model, multicast schedules are optimized to minimize the total end-to-end delay.
Throughput is another important QoS metric in wireless networks. This dissertation addresses how to leverage the spatial multiplexing function of MIMO links to improve wireless network throughput. Wireless interference modeling of a half-duplex MIMO node is presented. Based on the interference model, routing, spatial multiplexing, and scheduling are jointly considered in one optimization model. The throughput optimization problem is first addressed in constant bit rate networks and then in variable bit rate networks. In a variable data rate network, transmitters can use adaptive coding and modulation schemes to change their data rates so that the data rates are supported by the Signal to Noise and Interference Ratio (SINR). Dynamic Time-domain Duplexing for Self-backhauled Millimeter Wave Cellular Networks
Millimeter wave (mmW) bands between 30 and 300 GHz have attracted
considerable attention for next-generation cellular networks due to vast
quantities of available spectrum and the possibility of very high-dimensional
antenna ar-rays. However, a key issue in these systems is range: mmW signals
are extremely vulnerable to shadowing and poor high-frequency propagation.
Multi-hop relaying is therefore a natural technology for such systems to
improve cell range and cell edge rates without the addition of wired access
points. This paper studies the problem of scheduling for a simple
infrastructure cellular relay system where communication between wired base
stations and User Equipment follow a hierarchical tree structure through fixed
relay nodes. Such a systems builds naturally on existing cellular mmW backhaul
by adding mmW in the access links. A key feature of the proposed system is that
TDD duplexing selections can be made on a link-by-link basis due to directional
isolation from other links. We devise an efficient, greedy algorithm for
centralized scheduling that maximizes network utility by jointly optimizing the
duplexing schedule and resources allocation for dense, relay-enhanced OFDMA/TDD
mmW networks. The proposed algorithm can dynamically adapt to loading, channel
conditions and traffic demands. Significant throughput gains and improved
resource utilization offered by our algorithm over the static,
globally-synchronized TDD patterns are demonstrated through simulations based

Hybrid Satellite-Terrestrial Communication Networks for the Maritime Internet of Things: Key Technologies, Opportunities, and Challenges
With the rapid development of marine activities, there has been an increasing
number of maritime mobile terminals, as well as a growing demand for high-speed
and ultra-reliable maritime communications to keep them connected.
Traditionally, the maritime Internet of Things (IoT) is enabled by maritime
satellites. However, satellites are seriously restricted by their high latency
and relatively low data rate. As an alternative, shore & island-based base
stations (BSs) can be built to extend the coverage of terrestrial networks
using fourth-generation (4G), fifth-generation (5G), and beyond 5G services.
Unmanned aerial vehicles can also be exploited to serve as aerial maritime BSs.
Despite of all these approaches, there are still open issues for an efficient
maritime communication network (MCN). For example, due to the complicated
electromagnetic propagation environment, the limited geometrically available BS
sites, and rigorous service demands from mission-critical applications,
conventional communication and networking theories and methods should be
tailored for maritime scenarios. Towards this end, we provide a survey on the
demand for maritime communications, the state-of-the-art MCNs, and key
technologies for enhancing transmission efficiency, extending network coverage,
and provisioning maritime-specific services. Future challenges in developing an
environment-aware, service-driven, and integrated satellite-air-ground MCN to
be smart enough to utilize external auxiliary information, e.g., sea state and
atmosphere conditions, are also discussed
Interference-Aware Scheduling for Connectivity in MIMO Ad Hoc Multicast Networks
We consider a multicast scenario involving an ad hoc network of co-channel
MIMO nodes in which a source node attempts to share a streaming message with
all nodes in the network via some pre-defined multi-hop routing tree. The
message is assumed to be broken down into packets, and the transmission is
conducted over multiple frames. Each frame is divided into time slots, and each
link in the routing tree is assigned one time slot in which to transmit its
current packet. We present an algorithm for determining the number of time
slots and the scheduling of the links in these time slots in order to optimize
the connectivity of the network, which we define to be the probability that all
links can achieve the required throughput. In addition to time multiplexing,
the MIMO nodes also employ beamforming to manage interference when links are
simultaneously active, and the beamformers are designed with the maximum
connectivity metric in mind. The effects of outdated channel state information
(CSI) are taken into account in both the scheduling and the beamforming
designs. We also derive bounds on the network connectivity and sum transmit
power in order to illustrate the impact of interference on network performance.
Our simulation results demonstrate that the choice of the number of time slots
is critical in optimizing network performance, and illustrate the significant
