    Control of Multiple Remote Servers for Quality-Fair Delivery of Multimedia Contents

    This paper proposes a control scheme for the quality-fair delivery of several encoded video streams to mobile users sharing a common wireless resource. Video quality fairness, as well as similar delivery delays are targeted among streams. The proposed controller is implemented within some aggregator located near the bottleneck of the network. The transmission rate among streams is adapted based on the quality of the already encoded and buffered packets in the aggregator. Encoding rate targets are evaluated by the aggregator and fed back to each remote video server (fully centralized solution), or directly evaluated by each server in a distributed way (partially distributed solution). Each encoding rate target is adjusted for each stream independently based on the corresponding buffer level or buffering delay in the aggregator. Communication delays between the servers and the aggregator are taken into account. The transmission and encoding rate control problems are studied with a control-theoretic perspective. The system is described with a multi-input multi-output model. Proportional Integral (PI) controllers are used to adjust the video quality and control the aggregator buffer levels. The system equilibrium and stability properties are studied. This provides guidelines for choosing the parameters of the PI controllers. Experimental results show the convergence of the proposed control system and demonstrate the improvement in video quality fairness compared to a classical transmission rate fair streaming solution and to a utility max-min fair approach

    The advent of H.264/AVC is going to change the way Digital Television programs are broadcast. Each program can be independently encoded or jointly encoded resulting thus in a more efficient way to distribute the available channel bandwidth. This paper presents a combined coding scheme for multi-program video transmission in which the channel capacity is distributed among the programs according to the program complexities. A complexity bit rate control algorithm based on the Structural Similarity Index (SSIM) is proposed. SSIM metric is presented under the hypothesis that the Human Visual System (HSV) is very specialized in extracting structural information from a video sequence but not in extracting the errors. Thus, a measurement on structural distortion should give a better correlation to the subjective impression. Current simulations have demonstrated very promising results showing that the algorithm can effectively control the complexity of the multi-program encoding process whilst improving overall subjective

    Predictive Encoder and Buffer Control for Statistical Multiplexing of Multimedia Contents

    International audienceStatistical multiplexing of video contents aims at transmitting several variable bit rate (VBR) encoded video streams over a band-limited channel. Rate-distortion (RD) models for the encoded streams are often used to control the video encoders. Buffering at the output of encoders is one of the several techniques used to smooth out the fluctuating bit rate of compressed video due to variations in the activity of video contents. In this paper, a statistical multiplexer is proposed where a closed-loop control of both video encoders and buffers is performed jointly. First, a predictive joint video encoder controller accounting for minimum quality, fairness, and smoothness constraints is considered. Second, all buffers are controlled simultaneously to regulate the buffering delays. This delay is adjusted according to a reference delay constraint. The main idea is to update the encoding rate for each video unit according to the average level of the buffers, to maximize the quality of each program and effectively use the available channel rate. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme yields a smooth and fair video quality among programs thanks to the predictive control. A similar buffering delay for all programs and an efficient use of the available channel rate are ensured thanks to the buffer management and to the predictive closed-loop control

    An Enhanced Feedback-Base Downlink Packet Scheduling Algorithm for Mobile TV in WIMAX Networks

    With high speed access network technology like WIMAX, there is the need for efficient management of radio resources where the throughput and Qos requirements for Multicasting Broadcasting Services (MBS) for example TV are to be met. An enhanced feedback-base downlink Packet scheduling algorithm that can be used in IEEE 802.16d/e networks for mobile TV “one way traffic”(MBS) is needed to support many users utilizing multiuser diversity of the broadband of WIMAX systems where a group of users(good/worst channels) share allocated resources (bandwidth). This paper proposes a WIMAX framework feedback-base (like a channel-awareness) downlink packet scheduling algorithm for Mobile TV traffics in IEEE806.16, in which network Physical Timing Slots (PSs) resource blocks are allocated in a dynamic way to mobile TV subscribers based on the Channel State information (CSI) feedback, and then considering users with worst channels with the aim of improving system throughput while system coverage is being guaranteed. The algorithm was examined by changing the PSs bandwidth allocation of the users and different number of users of a cell. Simulation results show our proposed algorithm performed better than other algorithms (blind algorithms) in terms of improvement in system throughput performance.     Distortion Exponent in MIMO Fading Channels with Time-Varying Source Side Information

    Transmission of a Gaussian source over a time-varying multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel is studied under strict delay constraints. Availability of a correlated side information at the receiver is assumed, whose quality, i.e., correlation with the source signal, also varies over time. A block-fading model is considered for the states of the time-varying channel and the time-varying side information; and perfect state information at the receiver is assumed, while the transmitter knows only the statistics. The high SNR performance, characterized by the \textit{distortion exponent}, is studied for this joint source-channel coding problem. An upper bound is derived and compared with lowers based on list decoding, hybrid digital-analog transmission, as well as multi-layer schemes which transmit successive refinements of the source, relying on progressive and superposed transmission with list decoding. The optimal distortion exponent is characterized for the single-input multiple-output (SIMO) and multiple-input single-output (MISO) scenarios by showing that the distortion exponent achieved by multi-layer superpositon encoding with joint decoding meets the proposed upper bound. In the MIMO scenario, the optimal distortion exponent is characterized in the low bandwidth ratio regime, and it is shown that the multi-layer superposition encoding performs very close to the upper bound in the high bandwidth expansion regime.Comment: Submitted to IEEE Transactions on Information Theor
