    The main contribution of this MS Thesis is centered around taking steps towards successful multi-modal demonstrations using Northeastern's legged-aerial robot, Husky Carbon. This work discusses the challenges involved in achieving multi-modal locomotion such as trotting-hovering and thruster-assisted incline walking and reports progress made towards overcoming these challenges. Animals like birds use a combination of legged and aerial mobility, as seen in Chukars' wing-assisted incline running (WAIR), to achieve multi-modal locomotion. Chukars use forces generated by their flapping wings to manipulate ground contact forces and traverse steep slopes and overhangs. Husky's design takes inspiration from birds such as Chukars. This MS thesis presentation outlines the mechanical and electrical details of Husky's legged and aerial units. The thesis presents simulated incline walking using a high-fidelity model of the Husky Carbon over steep slopes of up to 45 degrees.Comment: Masters thesi

    A Bio-inspired architecture for adaptive quadruped locomotion over irregular terrain

    Tese de doutoramento Programa Doutoral em Engenharia Electrónica e de ComputadoresThis thesis presents a tentative advancement on walking control of small quadruped and humanoid position controlled robots, addressing the problem of walk generation by combining dynamical systems approach to motor control, insights from neuroethology research on vertebrate motor control and computational neuroscience. Legged locomotion is a complex dynamical process, despite the seemingly easy and natural behavior of the constantly present proficiency of legged animals. Research on locomotion and motor control in vertebrate animals from the last decades has brought to the attention of roboticists, the potential of the nature’s solutions to robot applications. Recent knowledge on the organization of complex motor generation and on mechanics and dynamics of locomotion has been successfully exploited to pursue agile robot locomotion. The work presented on this manuscript is part of an effort on the pursuit in devising a general, model free solution, for the generation of robust and adaptable walking behaviors. It strives to devise a practical solution applicable to real robots, such as the Sony’s quadruped AIBO and Robotis’ DARwIn- OP humanoid. The discussed solutions are inspired on the functional description of the vertebrate neural systems, especially on the concept of Central Pattern Generators (CPGs), their structure and organization, components and sensorimotor interactions. They use a dynamical systems approach for the implementation of the controller, especially on the use of nonlinear oscillators and exploitation of their properties. The main topics of this thesis are divided into three parts. The first part concerns quadruped locomotion, extending a previous CPG solution using nonlinear oscillators, and discussing an organization on three hierarchical levels of abstraction, sharing the purpose and knowledge of other works. It proposes a CPG solution which generates the walking motion for the whole-leg, which is then organized in a network for the production of quadrupedal gaits. The devised solution is able to produce goal-oriented locomotion and navigation as directed through highlevel commands from local planning methods. In this part, active balance on a standing quadruped is also addressed, proposing a method based on dynamical systems approach, exploring the integration of parallel postural mechanisms from several sensory modalities. The solutions are all successfully tested on the quadruped AIBO robot. In the second part, is addressed bipedal walking for humanoid robots. A CPG solution for biped walking based on the concept of motion primitives is proposed, loosely based on the idea of synergistic organization of vertebrate motor control. A set of motion primitives is shown to produce the basis of simple biped walking, and generalizable to goal-oriented walking. Using the proposed CPG, the inclusion of feedback mechanisms is investigated, for modulation and adaptation of walking, through phase transition control according to foot load information. The proposed solution is validated on the humanoid DARwIn-OP, and its application is evaluated within a whole-body control framework. The third part sidesteps a little from the other two topics. It discusses the CPG as having an alternative role to direct motor generation in locomotion, serving instead as a processor of sensory information for a feedback based motor generation. In this work a reflex based walking controller is devised for the compliant quadruped Oncilla robot, to serve as purely feedback based walking generation. The capabilities of the reflex network are shown in simulations, followed by a brief discussion on its limitations, and how they could be improved by the inclusion of a CPG.Esta tese apresenta uma tentativa de avanço no controlo de locomoção para pequenos robôs quadrúpedes e bipedes controlados por posição, endereçando o problema de geração motora através da combinação da abordagem de sistemas dinâmicos para o controlo motor, e perspectivas de investigação neuroetologia no controlo motor vertebrado e neurociência computacional. Andar é um processo dinâmico e complexo, apesar de parecer um comportamento fácil e natural devido à presença constante de animais proficientes em locomoção terrestre. Investigação na área da locomoção e controlo motor em animais vertebrados nas últimas decadas, trouxe à atenção dos roboticistas o potencial das soluções encontradas pela natureza aplicadas a aplicações robóticas. Conhecimento recente relativo à geração de comportamentos motores complexos e da mecânica da locomoção tem sido explorada com sucesso na procura de locomoção ágil na robótica. O trabalho apresentado neste documento é parte de um esforço no desenho de uma solução geral, e independente de modelos, para a geração robusta e adaptável de comportamentos locomotores. O foco é desenhar uma solução prática, aplicável a robôs reais, tal como o quadrúpede Sony AIBO e o humanóide DARwIn-OP. As soluções discutidas são inspiradas na descrição funcional do sistema nervoso vertebrado, especialmente no conceito de Central Pattern Generators (CPGs), a sua estrutura e organização, componentes e interacção sensorimotora. Estas soluções são implementadas usando uma abordagem em sistemas dinâmicos, focandos o uso de osciladores não lineares e a explorando as suas propriedades. Os tópicos principais desta tese estão divididos em três partes. A primeira parte explora o tema de locomoção quadrúpede, expandindo soluções prévias de CPGs usando osciladores não lineares, e discutindo uma organização em três níveis de abstracção, partilhando as ideias de outros trabalhos. Propõe uma solução de CPG que gera os movimentos locomotores para uma perna, que é depois organizado numa rede, para a produção de marcha quadrúpede. A solução concebida é capaz de produzir locomoção e navegação, comandada através de comandos de alto nível, produzidos por métodos de planeamento local. Nesta parte também endereçado o problema da manutenção do equilíbrio num robô quadrúpede parado, propondo um método baseado na abordagem em sistemas dinâmicos, explorando a integração de mecanismos posturais em paralelo, provenientes de várias modalidades sensoriais. As soluções são todas testadas com sucesso no robô quadrupede AIBO. Na segunda parte é endereçado o problema de locomoção bípede. É proposto um CPG baseado no conceito de motion primitives, baseadas na ideia de uma organização sinergética do controlo motor vertebrado. Um conjunto de motion primitives é usado para produzir a base de uma locomoção bípede simples e generalizável para navegação. Esta proposta de CPG é usada para de seguida se investigar a inclusão de mecanismos de feedback para modulação e adaptação da marcha, através do controlo de transições entre fases, de acordo com a informação de carga dos pés. A solução proposta é validada no robô humanóide DARwIn-OP, e a sua aplicação no contexto do framework de whole-body control é também avaliada. A terceira parte desvia um pouco dos outros dois tópicos. Discute o CPG como tendo um papel alternativo ao controlo motor directo, servindo em vez como um processador de informação sensorial para um mecanismo de locomoção puramente em feedback. Neste trabalho é desenhado um controlador baseado em reflexos para a geração da marcha de um quadrúpede compliant.     Climbing and Walking Robots

    With the advancement of technology, new exciting approaches enable us to render mobile robotic systems more versatile, robust and cost-efficient. Some researchers combine climbing and walking techniques with a modular approach, a reconfigurable approach, or a swarm approach to realize novel prototypes as flexible mobile robotic platforms featuring all necessary locomotion capabilities. The purpose of this book is to provide an overview of the latest wide-range achievements in climbing and walking robotic technology to researchers, scientists, and engineers throughout the world. Different aspects including control simulation, locomotion realization, methodology, and system integration are presented from the scientific and from the technical point of view. This book consists of two main parts, one dealing with walking robots, the second with climbing robots. The content is also grouped by theoretical research and applicative realization. Every chapter offers a considerable amount of interesting and useful information

    Locomotion Control of Hexapod Walking Robot with Four Degrees of Freedom per Leg

    V této práci představujeme nového šestinohého robota jménem HAntR, kterého jsme vytvořili dle potřeb Laboratoře výpočetní robotiky Centra umělé inteligence fakulty Elektrotechnické Českého vysokého učení technického v Praze. Jeho hlavním účelem jest vylepšit schopnosti pohybu v těžkém terénu původního robotu přidáním čtvrtého stupně volnosti každé noze. Na základě nově navržené nohy jsme také přepracovali celé tělo robotu tak, aby splnilo i další požadavky, jako například menší rozměry, či možnost osazení alespoň šesti Lithium-Iontovými monočlánky. V práci pečlivě popisujeme motivace a úvahy, které nás k výslednému návrhu vedly. Uvádíme řešení přímé i inverzní kinematické úlohy řešené pomocí podmínky na ideální orientaci konce nohy a uvažující i důležité kinematické singularity. Navržený robot byl vyzkoušen v několika experimentech, při kterých byl použit námi navržený řídicí systém napsaný v jazyce C++. Ukázalo se, že HAntR vydrží díky zvýšené energetické hustotě a lepšímu rozkladu sil v končetinách autonomně fungovat přes hodinu. Robot je také schopen jít rychlostí až 0.42m/s, což předčí mnohé srovnatelné roboty. Při experimentu, kdy robot stál na nakloněné rovině, bylo prokázáno zlepšení oproti předchozímu robotu. A také jsme dle pokynů této práce potvrdili, že i HAntR je schopen adaptivní chůze spoléhající pouze na poziční zpětnou vazbu.In this thesis a novel six-legged robot called HAntR is presented. The robot was developed according to needs of the Robotics Laboratory, at the Artificial Intelligent Center, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Czech Technical University in Prague. Its main purpose is enhancing rough-terrain movement capabilities by upgrading a former design by adding fourth degree of freedom to each leg. We also revised robot torso to fit new leg design and incorporate other requirements such as smaller dimensions with space for at least six Lithium-Ion cells. We thoroughly describe motivations and considerations that led us to the presented particular solution. Further, the solutions of forward and inverse kinematic tasks with partial orientation constraint and important singularities avoidance are presented. The proposed design has been evaluated in several experimental deployments, which utilised developed software controller written in C++. Endurance tests showed, that HAntR is able to remotely operate for over an hour thanks to increased energy density. Maximal speed test resulted to 0.42m/s during tripod gait, which outpaces most of the comparable robotic platforms. Experiment where HAntR stood on platform with varying inclination showed qualitative improvement against former robot. Finally, in accord with the thesis assignment, we proved that HAntR is able to perform walking with adaptive gait using positional feedback only

    Gait transition and modulation in a quadruped robot : a brainstem-like modulation approach

    In this article, we propose a bio-inspired architecture for a quadruped robot that is able to initiate/stop locomotion; generate different gaits, and to easily select and switch between the different gaits according to the speed and/or the behavioral context. This improves the robot stability and smoothness while locomoting. We apply nonlinear oscillators to model Central Pattern Generators (CPGs). These generate the rhythmic locomotor movements for a quadruped robot. The generated trajectories are modulated by a tonic signal, that encodes the required activity and/or modulation. This drive signal strength is mapped onto sets of CPG parameters. By increasing the drive signal, locomotion can be elicited and velocity increased while switching to the appropriate gaits. This drive signal can be specified according to sensory information or set a priori. The system is implemented in a simulated and real AIBO robot. Results demonstrate the adequacy of the architecture to generate and modulate the required coordinated trajectories according to a velocity increase; and to smoothly and easily switch among the different motor behaviors.The authors gratefully acknowledge Keir Pearson for all the discussions and help.     Modeling and analysis on bipedal wheel-legged robot with sprawling mechanism

    Mobile robots have a wide range of applications; they can be used not only in service industries such as manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare, and other specialized fields. As a result, the technology of mobile robots has garnered global attention. Most legged mobile robot use mammal-type mechanism because of the robot can walk at narrow space and can walk faster than sprawling mechanism. However, this type of legged robot has low wide range motion and foot placement is limited as well. Moreover, the stability of the mammal type is lower than sprawling makes this configuration able to locate its center of gravity at low position with wider support polygon. Therefore, this project has proposed a hybrid design and modelled of bipedal robot with combination of mammal and sprawling mechanism. The DH parameters is done in kinematics solution for both forward and inverse kinematics of each leg. Forward kinematics equation is used to measure the output Cartesian position robot from the feedback signal of each joint of each leg. On the other hand, inverse kinematic is used to translate the Cartesian trajectory input to the angular input for each joint of each leg. The multibody dynamic structure of the robot is approached in modeling this robot using MATLAB SIMULINK-Simscape to simulate the motion of the robot and the leg trajectory of the leg motion is designed for robot’s leg working envelope test. The dynamic performance angle are observed from the simulation results for each joint and the input angle is same as an output angle. Moreover, the results of trajectory motion and robot workspace is equality with the desired motion

    Planning Hybrid Driving-Stepping Locomotion for Ground Robots in Challenging Environments

    Ground robots capable of navigating a wide range of terrains are needed in several domains such as disaster response or planetary exploration. Hybrid driving-stepping locomotion is promising since it combines the complementary strengths of the two locomotion modes. However, suitable platforms require complex kinematic capabilities which need to be considered in corresponding locomotion planning methods. High terrain complexities induce further challenges for the planning problem. We present a search-based hybrid driving-stepping locomotion planning approach for robots which possess a quadrupedal base with legs ending in steerable wheels allowing for omnidirectional driving and stepping. Driving is preferred on sufficiently flat terrain while stepping is considered in the vicinity of obstacles. Steps are handled in a hierarchical manner: while only the connection between suitable footholds is considered during planning, those steps in the resulting path are expanded to detailed motion sequences considering the robot stability. To enable precise locomotion in challenging terrain, the planner takes the individual robot footprint into account. The method is evaluated in simulation and in real-world applications with the robots Momaro and Centauro. The results indicate that the planner provides bounded sub-optimal paths in feasible time. However, the required fine resolution and high-dimensional robot representation result in too large state spaces for more complex scenarios exceeding computation time and memory constraints. To enable the planner to be applicable in those scenarios, the method is extended to incorporate three levels of representation. In the vicinity of the robot, the detailed representation is used to obtain reliable paths for the near future. With increasing distance from the robot, the resolution gets coarser and the degrees of freedom of the robot representation decrease. To compensate this loss of information, those representations are enriched with additional semantics increasing the scene understanding. We further present how the most abstract representation can be used to generate an informed heuristic. Evaluation shows that planning is accelerated by multiple orders of magnitude with comparable result quality. However, manually designing the additional representations and tuning the corresponding cost functions requires a high effort. Therefore, we present a method to support the generation of an abstract representation through a convolutional neural network (CNN). While a low-dimensional, coarse robot representation and corresponding action set can be easily defined, a CNN is trained on artificially generated data to represent the abstract cost function. Subsequently, the abstract representation can be used to generate a similar informed heuristic, as described above. The CNN evaluation on multiple data sets indicates that the learned cost function generalizes well to realworld scenes and that the abstraction quality outperforms the manually tuned approach. Applied to hybrid driving-stepping locomotion planning, the heuristic achieves similar performance while design and tuning efforts are minimized. Since a learning-based method turned out to be beneficial to support the search-based planner, we finally investigate if the whole planning problem can be solved by a learning-based approach. Value Iteration Networks (VINs) are known to show good generalizability and goal-directed behavior, while being limited to small state spaces. Inspired by the above-described results, we extend VINs to incorporate multiple levels of abstraction to represent larger planning problems with suitable state space sizes. Experiments in 2D grid worlds show that this extension enables VINs to solve significantly larger planning tasks. We further apply the method to omnidirectional driving of the Centauro robot in cluttered environments which indicates limitations but also emphasizes the future potential of learning-based planning methods.Planung von Hybrider Fahr-Lauf-Lokomotion für Bodenroboter in Anspruchsvollen Umgebungen Bodenroboter, welche eine Vielzahl von Untergründen überwinden können, werden in vielen Anwendungsgebieten benötigt. Beispielszenarien sind die Katastrophenhilfe oder Erkundungsmissionen auf fremden Planeten. In diesem Kontext ist hybride Fahr-/Lauf-Fortbewegung vielversprechend, da sie die sich ergänzenden Stärken der beiden Fortbewegungsarten miteinander vereint. Um dies zu realisieren benötigen entsprechende Roboter allerdings komplexe kinematische Fähigkeiten, welche auch in adäquaten Ansätzen für die Planung dieser Fortbewegung berücksichtigt werden müssen. Anspruchsvolle Umgebungen mit komplexen Untergründen erhöhen dabei zusätzlich die Anforderungen an die Bewegungsplanung. In dieser Arbeit wird ein suchbasierter Ansatz für kombinierte Fahr-/Lauf-Fortbewegungsplanung vorgestellt. Die adressierten Zielplattformen sind vierbeinige Roboter, deren Beine in lenkbaren Rädern enden, so dass sie omnidirektional fahren und laufen können. Auf ausreichend ebenem Untergrund wird generell Fahren bevorzugt, während der Planer Laufmanöver in der Nähe von Hindernissen in Erwägung zieht. Schritte werden dabei in einer hierarchischen Art undWeise realisiert: Während des Planens werden nur Verbindungen zwischen geeigneten Auftrittsflächen gesucht. Nur solche Schritte, die im Ergebnispfad enthalten sind, werden anschließend zu detaillierten Bewegungsabläufen verfeinert, welche die Balance des Roboters sicherstellen. Um präzise Fortbewegung in anspruchsvollen Umgebungen zu ermöglichen, betrachtet der Planer die spezifischen Aufstandsflächen der vier Füße. Der Ansatz wurde sowohl in simulierten als auch in realen Tests mit den Robotern Momaro und Centauro evaluiert, wobei der Planer in der Lage war, Lösungspfade von ausreichender Qualität in zulässiger Zeit zu generieren. Allerdings ergeben die benötigte feine Planungsauflösung und die hochdimensionale Roboterrepräsentation große Zustandsräumen. Diese würden für komplexere oder größere Planungsprobleme die zulässige Rechenzeit und den verfügbaren Speicher überschreiten. Damit der Planer auch eben diese komplexeren oder größeren Planungsprobleme handhaben kann, wird eine Erweiterung des Ansatzes beschrieben, welche mehrere Repräsentationslevel mit einbezieht. In unmittelbarer Umgebung des Roboters wird die zuvor beschriebene detaillierte Repräsentation genutzt, um hochwertige Pfade für die nahe Zukunft zu erzeugen. Mit zunehmendem Abstand vom Roboter wird die Auflösung gröber und die Anzahl der Freiheitsgrade in der Roboterrepräsentation sinkt. Um den mit dieser Vergröberung einhergehenden Informationsverlust zu kompensieren, werden diese Repräsentationen mit zusätzlicher Semantik ausgestattet, welche das Szenenverständnis erhöht. Darüber hinaus wird beschrieben, wie die Repräsentation mit dem höchsten Abstraktionsgrad zur Berechnung einer effektiven Heuristik genutzt werden kann. Die Evaluation in Simulationsumgebungen zeigt, dass der Planungsprozess um mehrere Größenordnungen beschleunigt werden kann, während die Ergebnisqualität vergleichbar bleibt. Allerdings sind das manuelle Gestalten der zusätzlichen Repräsentationen und das dazugehörige Parametrisieren der Kostenfunktionen sehr arbeitsintensiv. Um diesen Aufwand zu reduzieren, wird daher eine Methode beschrieben, welche die Gestaltung einer abstrakten Repräsentation durch ein Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) unterstützt. Während eine grobe, niedrigdimensionale Roboterrepräsentation und ein dazugehöriges Aktionsset einfach definiert werden können, wird ein CNN auf künstlich erzeugten Daten trainiert, um die abstrakte Kostenfunktion zu lernen. Anschließend kann die so erzeugte abstrakte Repräsentation genutzt werden, um die bereits zuvor erwähnte effektive Heuristik zu berechnen. In der Evaluation des CNNs auf verschiedenen Datensätzen zeigt sich, dass die gelernte Kostenfunktion auch mit Daten aus realen Umgebungen funktioniert und dass die generelle Ergebnisqualität oberhalb der Ergebnisse mit manuell erzeugten Repräsentationen liegt. Die Anwendnung der Methode zur Planung hybrider Fahr-/Lauf-Fortbewegung zeigt, dass die so erzeugte Heuristik gleichwertige Ergebnisse wie die Heuristik auf Basis manuell erzeugter Repräsentation liefert, während der Aufwand zur Gestaltung und Parametrisierung deutlich verringert wurde. Da sich gezeigt hat, dass eine lernbasierte Methode den klassischen suchbasierten Ansatz effektiv unterstützen kann, wird in dieser Arbeit abschließend untersucht, ob das gesamte Planungsproblem durch eine lernbasierte Methode gelöst werden kann. Value Iteration Networks (VINs) sind in diesem Zusammenhang ein vielversprechender Ansatz, da sie bekanntlich ein gutes zielorientiertes Planungsverhalten lernen und das Gelernte auf unbekannte Situationen verallgemeinern können. Allerdings ist ihre bisherige Anwendung auf kleine Zustandsräume begrenzt. Durch die zuvor beschriebenen Ergebnisse motiviert, wird eine Erweiterung von VINs beschrieben, so dass diese auf verschiedenen Abstraktionsleveln planen, um größere Planungsprobleme in Zustandsräumen entsprechender Größe darzustellen. Experimente in 2D-Rasterumgebungen zeigen, dass die beschriebene Methode VINs in die Lage versetzt, deutlich größere Planungsprobleme zu lösen. Darüber hinaus wird die beschriebene Methode benutzt, um omnidirektionale Fahrmanöver für den Centauro-Roboter in anspruchsvollen Umgebungen zu planen. Gleichzeitig werden hier aber auch die momentanen, hardware-bedingten Grenzen rein lernbasierter Ansätze sowie ihr zukünftiges Potential aufgezeigt
