    LTE Optimization and Resource Management in Wireless Heterogeneous Networks

    Mobile communication technology is evolving with a great pace. The development of the Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile system by 3GPP is one of the milestones in this direction. This work highlights a few areas in the LTE radio access network where the proposed innovative mechanisms can substantially improve overall LTE system performance. In order to further extend the capacity of LTE networks, an integration with the non-3GPP networks (e.g., WLAN, WiMAX etc.) is also proposed in this work. Moreover, it is discussed how bandwidth resources should be managed in such heterogeneous networks. The work has purposed a comprehensive system architecture as an overlay of the 3GPP defined SAE architecture, effective resource management mechanisms as well as a Linear Programming based analytical solution for the optimal network resource allocation problem. In addition, alternative computationally efficient heuristic based algorithms have also been designed to achieve near-optimal performance

    Future Trends and Challenges for Mobile and Convergent Networks

    Some traffic characteristics like real-time, location-based, and community-inspired, as well as the exponential increase on the data traffic in mobile networks, are challenging the academia and standardization communities to manage these networks in completely novel and intelligent ways, otherwise, current network infrastructures can not offer a connection service with an acceptable quality for both emergent traffic demand and application requisites. In this way, a very relevant research problem that needs to be addressed is how a heterogeneous wireless access infrastructure should be controlled to offer a network access with a proper level of quality for diverse flows ending at multi-mode devices in mobile scenarios. The current chapter reviews recent research and standardization work developed under the most used wireless access technologies and mobile access proposals. It comprehensively outlines the impact on the deployment of those technologies in future networking environments, not only on the network performance but also in how the most important requirements of several relevant players, such as, content providers, network operators, and users/terminals can be addressed. Finally, the chapter concludes referring the most notable aspects in how the environment of future networks are expected to evolve like technology convergence, service convergence, terminal convergence, market convergence, environmental awareness, energy-efficiency, self-organized and intelligent infrastructure, as well as the most important functional requisites to be addressed through that infrastructure such as flow mobility, data offloading, load balancing and vertical multihoming.Comment: In book 4G & Beyond: The Convergence of Networks, Devices and Services, Nova Science Publishers, 201

    Resource Allocation for Next Generation Radio Access Networks

    Driven by data hungry applications, the architecture of mobile networks is moving towards that of densely deployed cells where each cell may use a different access technology as well as a different frequency band. Next generation networks (NGNs) are essentially identified by their dramatically increased data rates and their sustainable deployment. Motivated by these requirements, in this thesis we focus on (i) capacity maximisation, (ii) energy efficient configuration of different classes of radio access networks (RANs). To fairly allocate the available resources, we consider proportional fair rate allocations. We first consider capacity maximisation in co-channel 4G (LTE) networks, then we proceed to capacity maximisation in mixed LTE (including licensed LTE small cells) and 802.11 (WiFi) networks. And finally we study energy efficient capacity maximisation of dense 3G/4G co-channel small cell networks. In each chapter we provide a network model and a scalable resource allocation approach which may be implemented in a centralised or distributed manner depending on the objective and network constraints

    A Survey on Long-Range Wide-Area Network Technology Optimizations

    Long-Range Wide-Area Network (LoRaWAN) enables flexible long-range service communications with low power consumption which is suitable for many IoT applications. The densification of LoRaWAN, which is needed to meet a wide range of IoT networking requirements, poses further challenges. For instance, the deployment of gateways and IoT devices are widely deployed in urban areas, which leads to interference caused by concurrent transmissions on the same channel. In this context, it is crucial to understand aspects such as the coexistence of IoT devices and applications, resource allocation, Media Access Control (MAC) layer, network planning, and mobility support, that directly affect LoRaWAN’s performance.We present a systematic review of state-of-the-art works for LoRaWAN optimization solutions for IoT networking operations. We focus on five aspects that directly affect the performance of LoRaWAN. These specific aspects are directly associated with the challenges of densification of LoRaWAN. Based on the literature analysis, we present a taxonomy covering five aspects related to LoRaWAN optimizations for efficient IoT networks. Finally, we identify key research challenges and open issues in LoRaWAN optimizations for IoT networking operations that must be further studied in the future

The electronic devices have more capabilities and resources over the years, which makes the users more and more demanding. The necessity of being connected to the global world leads to the arising of wireless access points in the cities to provide internet access to the people in order to keep the constant interaction with the world. Vehicular networks arise to support safety related applications and to improve the traïŹƒc ïŹ‚ow in the roads; however, nowadays they are also used to provide entertainment to the users present in the vehicles. The best way to increase the utilization of the vehicular networks is to give to the users what they want: a constant connection to the internet. Despite of all the advances in the vehicular networks, there were several issues to be solved. The presence of dedicated infrastructure to vehicular networks is not wide yet, which leads to the need of using the available Wi-Fi hotspots and the cellular networks as access networks. In order to make all the management of the mobility process and to keep the user’s connection and session active, a mobility protocol is needed. Taking into account the huge number of access points present at the range of a vehicle for example in a city, it will be beneïŹcial to take advantage of all available resources in order to improve all the vehicular network, either to the users and to the operators. The concept of multihoming allows to take advantage of all available resources with multiple simultaneous connections. This dissertation has as objectives the integration of a mobility protocol, the Network-Proxy Mobile IPv6 protocol, with a host-multihoming per packet solution in order to increase the performance of the network by using more resources simultaneously, the support of multi-hop communications, either in IPv6 or IPv4, the capability of providing internet access to the users of the network, and the integration of the developed protocol in the vehicular environment, with the WAVE, Wi-Fi and cellular technologies. The performed tests focused on the multihoming features implemented on this dissertation, and on the IPv4 network access for the normal users. The obtained results show that the multihoming addition to the mobility protocol improves the network performance and provides a better resource management. Also, the results show the correct operation of the developed protocol in a vehicular environment.Nos dias de hoje assistimos a uma grande evolução no mundo da tecnologia e das redes sem ïŹos. Os dispositivos eletrĂłnicos possuem cada vez mais capacidades e recursos, o que torna os utilizadores tambĂ©m cada vez mais exigentes. A necessidade de estar permanentemente ligado a uma rede global leva a que cada vez existam mais pontos de acesso Ă  internet para as pessoas estarem em constante interação com o mundo. As redes veiculares surgiram para suportar aplicaçÔes de segurança rodoviĂĄria e para melhorar o ïŹ‚uxo rodoviĂĄrio nas estradas, mas agora sĂŁo tambĂ©m vistas como uma forma de proporcionar entretenimento aos utilizadores presentes nos veĂ­culos. Apesar de todos os avanços na ĂĄrea de redes veiculares ainda existem muitos desaïŹos para serem resolvidos. A presença de infraestrutura dedicada para as redes veiculares ainda nĂŁo Ă© muito vasta, o que leva a ser necessĂĄrio a utilização de hotspots Wi-Fi e de rede celular como redes de acesso. Para fazer toda a gestĂŁo da mobilidade e tambĂ©m para manter a ligação do utilizador ativa Ă© necessĂĄrio utilizar um protocolo de mobilidade. Tendo em conta tambĂ©m o grande nĂșmero de pontos de acesso presentes ao alcance de um veĂ­culo numa cidade por exemplo, seria Ăștil poder usufruir de todos os recursos disponĂ­veis de modo a melhorar toda a rede veicular, quer para os utilizadores quer para os operadores. O conceito de multihoming permite usufruir de todos os recursos viĂĄveis ao alcance de um veĂ­culo, atravĂ©s de ligaçÔes simultĂąneas. Esta dissertação tem como objetivos a integração de um protocolo de mobilidade, o protocolo Network-Proxy Mobile IPv6, com uma abordagem de multihoming por pacote, de modo a aumentar o desempenho da rede veicular atravĂ©s da utilização de mais recursos em simultĂąneo, o suporte de comunicaçÔes em multi-hop, a capacidade de fornecer acesso Ă  internet para os utilizadores das redes veiculares, e a integração do protocolo desenvolvido num ambiente veicular, com as tecnologias de rede WAVE, Wi-Fi e celular. Os testes realizados focaram-se nas caracterĂ­sticas de multihoming implementadas e na utilização da rede veicular atravĂ©s uma rede IPv4 para os utilizadores comuns. Os resultados obtidos mostram que a adição de multihoming ao protocolo de mobilidade melhora o desempenho da rede e oferece uma melhor gestĂŁo dos recursos disponĂ­veis.
