    Scheduling in assembly type job-shops

    Assembly type job-shop scheduling is a generalization of the job-shop scheduling problem to include assembly operations. In the assembly type job-shops scheduling problem, there are n jobs which are to be processed on in workstations and each job has a due date. Each job visits one or more workstations in a predetermined route. The primary difference between this new problem and the classical job-shop problem is that two or more jobs can merge to foul\u27 a new job at a specified workstation, that is job convergence is permitted. This feature cannot be modeled by existing job-shop techniques. In this dissertation, we develop scheduling procedures for the assembly type job-shop with the objective of minimizing total weighted tardiness. Three types of workstations are modeled: single machine, parallel machine, and batch machine. We label this new scheduling procedure as SB. The SB procedure is heuristic in nature and is derived from the shifting bottleneck concept. SB decomposes the assembly type job-shop scheduling problem into several workstation scheduling sub-problems. Various types of techniques are used in developing the scheduling heuristics for these sub-problems including the greedy method, beam search, critical path analysis, local search, and dynamic programming. The performance of SB is validated on a set of test problems and compared with priority rules that are normally used in practice. The results show that SB outperforms the priority rules by an average of 19% - 36% for the test problems. SB is extended to solve scheduling problems with other objectives including minimizing the maximum completion time, minimizing weighted flow time and minimizing maximum weighted lateness. Comparisons with the test problems, indicate that SB outperforms the priority rules for these objectives as well. The SB procedure and its accompanying logic is programmed into an object oriented scheduling system labeled as LEKIN. The LEKIN program includes a standard library of scheduling rules and hence can be used as a platform for the development of new scheduling heuristics. In industrial applications LEKIN allows schedulers to obtain effective machine schedules rapidly. The results from this research allow us to increase shop utilization, improve customer satisfaction, and lower work-in-process inventory without a major capital investment

    The Job-shop scheduling is one of the most important industrial activities, especially in manufacturing planning. The problem complexity has increased along with the increase in the complexity of operations and product-mix. To solve this problem, numerous approaches have been developed incorporating discrete event simulation methodology. The scope and the purpose of this paper is to present a survey which covers most of the solving techniques of Job Shop Scheduling (JSS) problem. A classification of these techniques has been proposed: Traditional Techniques and Advanced Techniques. The traditional techniques to solve JSS could not fully satisfy the global competition and rapidly changing in customer requirements. Simulation and Artificial Intelligence (AI) have proven to be excellent strategic tool for scheduling problems in general and JSS in particular.     Satisfying flexible due dates in fuzzy job shop by means of hybrid evolutionary algorithms

    This paper tackles the job shop scheduling problem with fuzzy sets modelling uncertain durations and flexible due dates. The objective is to achieve high-service level by maximising due-date satisfaction, considering two different overall satisfaction measures as objective functions. We show how these functions model different attitudes in the framework of fuzzy multicriteria decision making and we define a measure of solution robustness based on an existing a-posteriori semantics of fuzzy schedules to further assess the quality of the obtained solutions. As solving method, we improve a memetic algorithm from the literature by incorporating a new heuristic mechanism to guide the search through plateaus of the fitness landscape. We assess the performance of the resulting algorithm with an extensive experimental study, including a parametric analysis, and a study of the algorithm’s components and synergy between them. We provide results on a set of existing and new benchmark instances for fuzzy job shop with flexible due dates that show the competitiveness of our method.This research has been supported by the Spanish Government under research grant TIN2016-79190-R

    A research survey: review of flexible job shop scheduling techniques

    In the last 25 years, extensive research has been carried out addressing the flexible job shop scheduling (JSS) problem. A variety of techniques ranging from exact methods to hybrid techniques have been used in this research. The paper aims at presenting the development of flexible JSS and a consolidated survey of various techniques that have been employed since 1990 for problem resolution. The paper comprises evaluation of publications and research methods used in various research papers. Finally, conclusions are drawn based on performed survey results. A total of 404 distinct publications were found addressing the FJSSP. Some of the research papers presented more than one technique/algorithm to solve the problem that is categorized into 410 different applications. Selected time period of these research papers is between 1990 and February 2014. Articles were searched mainly on major databases such as SpringerLink, Science Direct, IEEE Xplore, Scopus, EBSCO, etc. and other web sources.     Train scheduling with application to the UK rail network

    Nowadays, transforming the railway industry for better performance and making the best usage of the current capacity are the key issues in many countries. Operational research methods and in particular scheduling techniques have a substantial potential to offer algorithmic solutions to improve railway operation and control. This thesis looks at train scheduling and rescheduling problems in a microscopic level with regard to the track topology. All of the timetable components are fixed and we aim to minimize delay by considering a tardiness objective function and only allowing changes to the order and to the starting times of trains on blocks. Various operational and safety constraints should be considered. We have achieved further developments in the field including generalizations to the existing models in order to obtain a generic model that includes important additional constraints. We make use of the analogy between the train scheduling problem and job shop scheduling problem. The model is customized to the UK railway network and signaling system. Introduced solution methods are inspired by the successful results of the shifting bottleneck to solve the job shop scheduling problems. Several solution methods such as mathematical programming and different variants of the shifting bottleneck are investigated. The proposed methods are implemented on a real-world case study based on London Bridge area in the South East of the UK. It is a dense network of interconnected lines and complicated with regard to stations and junctions structure. Computational experiments show the efficiency and limitations of the mathematical programming model and one variant of the proposed shifting bottleneck algorithms. This study also addresses train routing and rerouting problems in a mesoscopic level regarding relaxing some of the detailed constraints. The aim is to make the best usage of routing options in the network to minimize delay propagation. In addition to train routes, train entry times and orders on track segment are defined. Hence, the routing and scheduling decisions are combined in the solutions arising from this problem. Train routing and rerouting problems are formulated as modified job shop problems to include the main safety and operational constraints. Novel shifting bottleneck algorithms are provided to solve the problem. Computational results are reported on the same case study based on London Bridge area and the results show the efficiency of one variant of the developed shifting bottleneck algorithms in terms of solution quality and runtime

    Sheet-Metal Production Scheduling Using AlphaGo Zero

    This work investigates the applicability of a reinforcement learning (RL) approach, specifically AlphaGo Zero (AZ), for optimizing sheet-metal (SM) production schedules with respect to tardiness and material waste. SM production scheduling is a complex job shop scheduling problem (JSSP) with dynamic operation times, routing flexibility and supplementary constraints. SM production systems are capable of processing a large number of highly heterogeneous jobs simultaneously. While very large relative to the JSSP literature, the SM-JSSP instances investigated in this work are small relative to the SM production reality. Given the high dimensionality of the SM-JSSP, computation of an optimal schedule is not tractable. Simple heuristic solutions often deliver bad results. We use AZ to selectively search the solution space. To this end, a single player AZ version is pretrained using supervised learning on schedules generated by a heuristic, fine-tuned using RL and evaluated through comparison with a heuristic baseline and Monte Carlo Tree Search. It will be shown that AZ outperforms the other approaches. The work’s scientific contribution is twofold: On the one hand, a novel scheduling problem is formalized such that it can be tackled using RL approaches. On the other hand, it is proved that AZ can be successfully modified to provide a solution for the problem at hand, whereby a new line of research into real-world applications of AZ is opened

    Efficient Algorithms for Unrelated Parallel Machine Scheduling Considering Time of Use Pricing and Demand Charges

    There is an ever-increasing focus on sustainability and energy consumption worldwide. Manufacturing is one of the major areas where energy reduction is not only environmentally beneficial, but also incredibly financially beneficial. These industrial consumers pay for their electricity according to prices that fluctuate throughout the day. These price fluctuations are in place to shift consumption away from “peak” times, when electricity is in the highest demand. In addition to this consumption cost, industrial consumers are charged according to their highest level of demand in a given window of time in the form of demand charges. This paper presents multiple solution methods to solve a parallel machine shop scheduling problem to minimize the total energy cost of the production schedule under Time of Use (TOU) and demand charge pricing. The greedy heuristic and genetic algorithm developed are designed to provide efficient solutions to this problem. The results of these methods are compared to a previously developed integer program (IP) solved using CPLEX with respect to the quality of the solution and the computational time required to solve it. Findings of these tests show that the greedy heuristic handles the test problems with only a small optimality gap to the genetic algorithm and optimal IP solution. The largest test problems could not be solved by the genetic algorithm in the provided time period due to difficulty generating an initial solution population. However, when successful the genetic algorithm performed comparably to the CPLEX solver in terms solution quality yet provided faster solve times

    Fast local search for fuzzy job shop scheduling

    In the sequel, we propose a new neighbourhood structure for local search for the fuzzy job shop scheduling problem. This is a variant of the well-known job shop problem, with uncertainty in task durations modelled using fuzzy numbers and where the goal is to minimise the expected makespan of the resulting schedule. The new neighbourhood structure is based in changing the relative order of subsequences of tasks within critical blocks. We study its theoretical properties and provide a makespan estimate which allows to select only feasible neighbours while covering a greater portion of the search space than a previous neighbourhood from the literature. Despite its larger search domain, experimental results show that this new structure notably reduces the computational load of local search with respect to the previous neighbourhood while maintaining or even improving solution quality
