    Cross-lingual question answering

    Question Answering has become an intensively researched area in the last decade, being seen as the next step beyond Information Retrieval in the attempt to provide more concise and better access to large volumes of available information. Question Answering builds on Information Retrieval technology for a first touch of possible relevant data and uses further natural language processing techniques to search for candidate answers and to look for clues that accept or invalidate the candidates as right answers to the question. Though most of the research has been carried out in monolingual settings, where the question and the answer-bearing documents share the same natural language, current approaches concentrate on cross-language scenarios, where the question and the documents are in different languages. Known in this context and common with the Information Retrieval research are three methods of crossing the language barrier: by translating the question, by translating the documents or by aligning both the question and the documents to a common inter-lingual representation. We present a cross-lingual English to German Question Answering system, for both factoid and definition questions, using a German monolingual system and translating the questions from English to German. Two different techniques of translation are evaluated: • direct translation of the English input question into German and • transfer-based translation, by using an intermediate representation that captures the “meaning” of the original question and is translated into the target language. For both translation techniques two types of translation tools are used: bilingual dictionaries and machine translation. The intermediate representation captures the semantic meaning of the question in terms of Question Type (QType), Expected Answer Type (EAType) and Focus, information that steers the workflow of the question answering process. The German monolingual Question Answering system can answer both factoid and definition questions and is based on several premises: • facts and definitions are usually expressed locally at the level of a sentence and its surroundings; • proximity of concepts within a sentence can be related to their semantic dependency; • for factoid questions, redundancy of candidate answers is a good indicator of their suitability; • definitions of concepts are expressed using fixed linguistic structures such as appositions, modifiers, and abbreviation extensions. Extensive evaluations of the monolingual system have shown that the above mentioned hypothesis holds true in most of the cases when dealing with a fairly large collection of documents, like the one used in the CLEF evaluation forum.Innerhalb der letzten zehn Jahre hat sich Question Answering zu einem intensiv erforschten Themengebiet gewandelt, es stellt den nächsten Schritt des Information Retrieval dar, mit dem Bestreben einen präziseren Zugang zu großen Datenbeständen von verfügbaren Informationen bereitzustellen. Das Question Answering setzt auf die Information Retrieval-Technologie, um mögliche relevante Daten zu suchen, kombiniert mit weiteren Techniken zur Verarbeitung von natürlicher Sprache, um mögliche Antwortkandidaten zu identifizieren und diese anhand von Hinweisen oder Anhaltspunkten entsprechend der Frage als richtige Antwort zu akzeptieren oder als unpassend zu erklären. Während ein Großteil der Forschung den einsprachigen Kontext voraussetzt, wobei Frage- und Antwortdokumente ein und dieselbe Sprache teilen, konzentrieren sich aktuellere Ansätze auf sprachübergreifende Szenarien, in denen die Frage- und Antwortdokumente in unterschiedlichen Sprachen vorliegen. Im Kontext des Information Retrieval existieren drei bekannte Ansätze, die versuchen auf unterschiedliche Art und Weise die Sprachbarriere zu überwinden: durch die Übersetzung der Frage, durch die Übersetzung der Dokumente oder durch eine Angleichung von sowohl der Frage als auch der Dokumente zu einer gemeinsamen interlingualen Darstellung. Wir präsentieren ein sprachübergreifendes Question Answering System vom Englischen ins Deutsche, das sowohl für Faktoid- als auch für Definitionsfragen funktioniert. Dazu verwenden wir ein einsprachiges deutsches System und übersetzen die Fragen vom Englischen ins Deutsche. Zwei unterschiedliche Techniken der Übersetzung werden untersucht: • die direkte Übersetzung der englischen Fragestellung ins Deutsche und • die Abbildungs-basierte Übersetzung, die eine Zwischendarstellung verwendet, um die „Semantik“ der ursprünglichen Frage zu erfassen und in die Zielsprache zu übersetzen. Für beide aufgelisteten Übersetzungstechniken werden zwei Übersetzungsquellen verwendet: zweisprachige Wörterbücher und maschinelle Übersetzung. Die Zwischendarstellung erfasst die Semantik der Frage in Bezug auf die Art der Frage (QType), den erwarteten Antworttyp (EAType) und Fokus, sowie die Informationen, die den Ablauf des Frage-Antwort-Prozesses steuern. Das deutschsprachige Question Answering System kann sowohl Faktoid- als auch Definitionsfragen beantworten und basiert auf mehreren Prämissen: • Fakten und Definitionen werden in der Regel lokal auf Satzebene ausgedrückt; • Die Nähe von Konzepten innerhalb eines Satzes kann auf eine semantische Verbindung hinweisen; • Bei Faktoidfragen ist die Redundanz der Antwortkandidaten ein guter Indikator für deren Eignung; • Definitionen von Begriffen werden mit festen sprachlichen Strukturen ausgedrückt, wie Appositionen, Modifikatoren, Abkürzungen und Erweiterungen. Umfangreiche Auswertungen des einsprachigen Systems haben gezeigt, dass die oben genannten Hypothesen in den meisten Fällen wahr sind, wenn es um eine ziemlich große Sammlung von Dokumenten geht, wie bei der im CLEF Evaluationsforum verwendeten Version

    Use Case Oriented Medical Visual Information Retrieval & System Evaluation

    Large amounts of medical visual data are produced daily in hospitals, while new imaging techniques continue to emerge. In addition, many images are made available continuously via publications in the scientific literature and can also be valuable for clinical routine, research and education. Information retrieval systems are useful tools to provide access to the biomedical literature and fulfil the information needs of medical professionals. The tools developed in this thesis can potentially help clinicians make decisions about difficult diagnoses via a case-based retrieval system based on a use case associated with a specific evaluation task. This system retrieves articles from the biomedical literature when querying with a case description and attached images. This thesis proposes a multimodal approach for medical case-based retrieval with focus on the integration of visual information connected to text. Furthermore, the ImageCLEFmed evaluation campaign was organised during this thesis promoting medical retrieval system evaluation

    Document Meta-Information as Weak Supervision for Machine Translation

    Data-driven machine translation has advanced considerably since the first pioneering work in the 1990s with recent systems claiming human parity on sentence translation for highresource tasks. However, performance degrades for low-resource domains with no available sentence-parallel training data. Machine translation systems also rarely incorporate the document context beyond the sentence level, ignoring knowledge which is essential for some situations. In this thesis, we aim to address the two issues mentioned above by examining ways to incorporate document-level meta-information into data-driven machine translation. Examples of document meta-information include document authorship and categorization information, as well as cross-lingual correspondences between documents, such as hyperlinks or citations between documents. As this meta-information is much more coarse-grained than reference translations, it constitutes a source of weak supervision for machine translation. We present four cumulatively conducted case studies where we devise and evaluate methods to exploit these sources of weak supervision both in low-resource scenarios where no task-appropriate supervision from parallel data exists, and in a full supervision scenario where weak supervision from document meta-information is used to supplement supervision from sentence-level reference translations.     Bootstrapping named entity resources for adaptive question answering systems

    Los Sistemas de Búsqueda de Respuestas (SBR) amplían las capacidades de un buscador de información tradicional con la capacidad de encontrar respuestas precisas a las preguntas del usuario. El objetivo principal es facilitar el acceso a la información y disminuir el tiempo y el esfuerzo que el usuario debe emplear para encontrar una información concreta en una lista de documentos relevantes. En esta investigación se han abordado dos trabajos relacionados con los SBR. La primera parte presenta una arquitectura para SBR en castellano basada en la combinación y adaptación de diferentes técnicas de Recuperación y de Extracción de Información. Esta arquitectura está integrada por tres módulos principales que incluyen el análisis de la pregunta, la recuperación de pasajes relevantes y la extracción y selección de respuestas. En ella se ha prestado especial atención al tratamiento de las Entidades Nombradas puesto que, con frecuencia, son el tema de las preguntas o son buenas candidatas como respuestas. La propuesta se ha encarnado en el SBR del grupo MIRACLE que ha sido evaluado de forma independiente durante varias ediciones en la tarea compartida CLEF@QA, parte del foro de evaluación competitiva Cross-Language Evaluation Forum (CLEF). Se describen aquí las participaciones y los resultados obtenidos entre 2004 y 2007. El SBR de MIRACLE ha obtenido resultados moderados en el desempeño de la tarea con tasas de respuestas correctas entre el 20% y el 30%. Entre los resultados obtenidos destacan los de la tarea principal de 2005 y la tarea piloto de Búsqueda de Respuestas en tiempo real de 2006, RealTimeQA. Esta última tarea, además de requerir respuestas correctas incluía el tiempo de respuesta como un factor adicional en la evaluación. Estos resultados respaldan la validez de la arquitectura propuesta como una alternativa viable para los SBR sobre colecciones textuales y también corrobora resultados similares para el inglés y otras lenguas. Por otro lado, el análisis de los resultados a lo largo de las diferentes ediciones de CLEF así como la comparación con otros SBR apunta nuevos problemas y retos. Según nuestra experiencia, los sistemas de QA son más complicados de adaptar a otros dominios y lenguas que los sistemas de Recuperación de Información. Este problema viene heredado del uso de herramientas complejas de análisis de lenguaje como analizadores morfológicos, sintácticos y semánticos. Entre estos últimos se cuentan las herramientas para el Reconocimiento y Clasificación de Entidades Nombradas (NERC en inglés) así como para la Detección y Clasificación de Relaciones (RDC en inglés). Debido a la di cultad de adaptación del SBR a distintos dominios y colecciones, en la segunda parte de esta tesis se investiga una propuesta diferente basada en la adquisición de conocimiento mediante métodos de aprendizaje ligeramente supervisado. El objetivo de esta investigación es adquirir recursos semánticos útiles para las tareas de NERC y RDC usando colecciones de textos no anotados. Además, se trata de eliminar la dependencia de herramientas de análisis lingüístico con el fin de facilitar que las técnicas sean portables a diferentes dominios e idiomas. En primer lugar, se ha realizado un estudio de diferentes algoritmos para NERC y RDC de forma semisupervisada a partir de unos pocos ejemplos (bootstrapping). Este trabajo propone primero una arquitectura común y compara diferentes funciones que se han usado en la evaluación y selección de resultados intermedios, tanto instancias como patrones. La principal propuesta es un nuevo algoritmo que permite la adquisición simultánea e iterativa de instancias y patrones asociados a una relación. Incluye también la posibilidad de adquirir varias relaciones de forma simultánea y mediante el uso de la hipótesis de exclusividad obtener mejores resultados. Como característica distintiva el algoritmo explora la colección de textos con una estrategia basada en indización, que permite adquirir conocimiento de grandes colecciones. La estrategia de selección de candidatos y la evaluación se basan en la construcción de un grafo de instancias y patrones, que justifica nuestro método para la selección de candidatos. Este procedimiento es semejante al frente de exploración de una araña web y permite encontrar las instancias más parecidas a las semillas con las evidencias disponibles. Este algoritmo se ha implementado en el sistema SPINDEL y para su evaluación se ha comenzado con el caso concreto de la adquisición de recursos para las clases de Entidades Nombradas más comunes, Persona, Lugar y Organización. El objetivo es adquirir nombres asociados a cada una de las categorías así como patrones contextuales que permitan detectar menciones asociadas a una clase. Se presentan resultados para la adquisición de dos idiomas distintos, castellano e inglés, y para el castellano, en dos dominios diferentes, noticias y textos de una enciclopedia colaborativa, Wikipedia. En ambos casos el uso de herramientas de análisis lingüístico se ha limitado de acuerdo con el objetivo de avanzar hacia la independencia de idioma. Las listas adquiridas mediante bootstrapping parten de menos de 40 semillas por clase y obtienen del orden de 30.000 instancias de calidad variable. Además se obtienen listas de patrones indicativos asociados a cada clase de entidad. La evaluación indirecta confirma la utilidad de ambos recursos en la clasificación de Entidades Nombradas usando un enfoque simple basado únicamente en diccionarios. La mejor configuración obtiene para la clasificación en castellano una medida F de 67,17 y para inglés de 55,99. Además se confirma la utilidad de los patrones adquiridos que en ambos casos ayudan a mejorar la cobertura. El módulo requiere menor esfuerzo de desarrollo que los enfoques supervisados, si incluimos la necesidad de anotación, aunque su rendimiento es inferior por el momento. En definitiva, esta investigación constituye un primer paso hacia el desarrollo de aplicaciones semánticas como los SBR que requieran menos esfuerzo de adaptación a un dominio o lenguaje nuevo.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Question Answering (QA) systems add new capabilities to traditional search engines with the ability to find precise answers to user questions. Their objective is to enable easier information access by reducing the time and effort that the user requires to find a concrete information among a list of relevant documents. In this thesis we have carried out two works related with QA systems. The first part introduces an architecture for QA systems for Spanish which is based on the combination and adaptation of different techniques from Information Retrieval (IR) and Information Extraction (IE). This architecture is composed by three modules that include question analysis, relevant passage retrieval and answer extraction and selection. The appropriate processing of Named Entities (NE) has received special attention because of their importance as question themes and candidate answers. The proposed architecture has been implemented as part of the MIRACLE QA system. This system has taken part in independent evaluations like the CLEF@QA track in the Cross-Language Evaluation Forum (CLEF). Results from 2004 to 2007 campaigns as well as the details and the evolution of the system have been described in deep. The MIRACLE QA system has obtained moderate performance with a first answer accuracy ranging between 20% and 30%. Nevertheless, it is important to highlight the results obtained in the 2005 main QA task and the RealTimeQA pilot task in 2006. The last one included response time as an important additional variable of the evaluation. These results back the proposed architecture as an option for QA from textual collection and confirm similar findings obtained for English and other languages. On the other hand, the analysis of the results along evaluation campaigns and the comparison with other QA systems point problems with current systems and new challenges. According to our experience, it is more dificult to tailor QA systems to different domains and languages than IR systems. The problem is inherited by the use of complex language analysis tools like POS taggers, parsers and other semantic analyzers, like NE Recognition and Classification (NERC) and Relation Detection and Characterization (RDC) tools. The second part of this thesis tackles this problem and proposes a different approach to adapting QA systems for di erent languages and collections. The proposal focuses on acquiring knowledge for the semantic analyzers based on lightly supervised approaches. The goal is to obtain useful resources that help to perform NERC or RDC using as few annotated resources as possible. Besides, we try to avoid dependencies from other language analysis tools with the purpose that these methods apply to different languages and domains. First of all, we have study previous work on building NERC and RDC modules with few supervision, particularly bootstrapping methods. We propose a common framework for different bootstrapping systems that help to unify different evaluation functions for intermediate results. The main proposal is a new algorithm that is able to simultaneously acquire instances and patterns associated to a relation of interest. It also uses mutual exclusion among relations to reduce concept drift and achieve better results. A distinctive characteristic is that it uses a query based exploration strategy of the text collection which enables their use for larger collections. Candidate selection and evaluation are based on incrementally building a graph of instances and patterns which also justifies our evaluation function. The discovery approach is analogous to the front of exploration in a web crawler and it is able to find the most similar instances to the available seeds. This algorithm has been implemented in the SPINDEL system. We have selected for evaluation the task of acquiring resources for the most common NE classes, Person, Location and Organization. The objective is to acquire name instances that belong to any of the classes as well as contextual patterns that help to detect mentions of NE that belong to that class. We present results for the acquisition of resources from raw text from two different languages, Spanish and English. We also performed experiments for Spanish in two different collections, news and texts from a collaborative encyclopedia, Wikipedia. Both cases are tackled with limited language analysis tools and resources. With an initial list of 40 instance seeds, the bootstrapping process is able to acquire large name lists containing up to 30.000 instances with a variable quality. Besides, large lists of indicative patterns are obtained too. Our indirect evaluation confirms the utility of both resources to classify NE using a simple dictionary recognition approach. Best results for Spanish obtained a F-score of 67,17 and for English this value is 55,99. The module requires much less development effort than annotation for supervised algorithms although the performance is not in pair yet. This research is a first step towards the development of semantic applications like QA for a new language or domain with no annotated corpora that requires less adaptation effort

    Stress detection in lifelog data for improved personalized lifelog retrieval system

    Stress can be categorized into acute and chronic types, with acute stress having short-term positive effects in managing hazardous situations, while chronic stress can adversely impact mental health. In a biological context, stress elicits a physiological response indicative of the fight-or-flight mechanism, accompanied by measurable changes in physiological signals such as blood volume pulse (BVP), galvanic skin response (GSR), and skin temperature (TEMP). While clinical-grade devices have traditionally been used to measure these signals, recent advancements in sensor technology enable their capture using consumer-grade wearable devices, providing opportunities for research in acute stress detection. Despite these advancements, there has been limited focus on utilizing low-resolution data obtained from sensor technology for early stress detection and evaluating stress detection models under real-world conditions. Moreover, the potential of physiological signals to infer mental stress information remains largely unexplored in lifelog retrieval systems. This thesis addresses these gaps through empirical investigations and explores the potential of utilizing physiological signals for stress detection and their integration within the state-of-the-art (SOTA) lifelog retrieval system. The main contributions of this thesis are as follows. Firstly, statistical analyses are conducted to investigate the feasibility of using low-resolution data for stress detection and emphasize the superiority of subject-dependent models over subject-independent models, thereby proposing the optimal approach to training stress detection models with low-resolution data. Secondly, longitudinal stress lifelog data is collected to evaluate stress detection models in real-world settings. It is proposed that training lifelog models on physiological signals in real-world settings is crucial to avoid detection inaccuracies caused by differences between laboratory and free-living conditions. Finally, a state-of-the-art lifelog interactive retrieval system called \lifeseeker is developed, incorporating the stress-moment filter function. Experimental results demonstrate that integrating this function improves the overall performance of the system in both interactive and non-interactive modes. In summary, this thesis contributes to the understanding of stress detection applied in real-world settings and showcases the potential of integrating stress information for enhancing personalized lifelog retrieval system performance

    A text mining approach for Arabic question answering systems

    As most of the electronic information available nowadays on the web is stored as text,developing Question Answering systems (QAS) has been the focus of many individualresearchers and organizations. Relatively, few studies have been produced for extractinganswers to “why” and “how to” questions. One reason for this negligence is that when goingbeyond sentence boundaries, deriving text structure is a very time-consuming and complexprocess. This thesis explores a new strategy for dealing with the exponentially large spaceissue associated with the text derivation task. To our knowledge, to date there are no systemsthat have attempted to addressing such type of questions for the Arabic language.We have proposed two analytical models; the first one is the Pattern Recognizer whichemploys a set of approximately 900 linguistic patterns targeting relationships that hold withinsentences. This model is enhanced with three independent algorithms to discover thecausal/explanatory role indicated by the justification particles. The second model is the TextParser which is approaching text from a discourse perspective in the framework of RhetoricalStructure Theory (RST). This model is meant to break away from the sentence limit. TheText Parser model is built on top of the output produced by the Pattern Recognizer andincorporates a set of heuristics scores to produce the most suitable structure representing thewhole text.The two models are combined together in a way to allow for the development of an ArabicQAS to deal with “why” and “how to” questions. The Pattern Recognizer model achieved anoverall recall of 81% and a precision of 78%. On the other hand, our question answeringsystem was able to find the correct answer for 68% of the test questions. Our results revealthat the justification particles play a key role in indicating intrasentential relations

    Mixed-Language Arabic- English Information Retrieval

    Includes abstract.Includes bibliographical references.This thesis attempts to address the problem of mixed querying in CLIR. It proposes mixed-language (language-aware) approaches in which mixed queries are used to retrieve most relevant documents, regardless of their languages. To achieve this goal, however, it is essential firstly to suppress the impact of most problems that are caused by the mixed-language feature in both queries and documents and which result in biasing the final ranked list. Therefore, a cross-lingual re-weighting model was developed. In this cross-lingual model, term frequency, document frequency and document length components in mixed queries are estimated and adjusted, regardless of languages, while at the same time the model considers the unique mixed-language features in queries and documents, such as co-occurring terms in two different languages. Furthermore, in mixed queries, non-technical terms (mostly those in non-English language) would likely overweight and skew the impact of those technical terms (mostly those in English) due to high document frequencies (and thus low weights) of the latter terms in their corresponding collection (mostly the English collection). Such phenomenon is caused by the dominance of the English language in scientific domains. Accordingly, this thesis also proposes reasonable re-weighted Inverse Document Frequency (IDF) so as to moderate the effect of overweighted terms in mixed queries

    Classifying Attitude by Topic Aspect for English and Chinese Document Collections

    The goal of this dissertation is to explore the design of tools to help users make sense of subjective information in English and Chinese by comparing attitudes on aspects of a topic in English and Chinese document collections. This involves two coupled challenges: topic aspect focus and attitude characterization. The topic aspect focus is specified by using information retrieval techniques to obtain documents on a topic that are of interest to a user and then allowing the user to designate a few segments of those documents to serve as examples for aspects that she wishes to see characterized. A novel feature of this work is that the examples can be drawn from documents in two languages (English and Chinese). A bilingual aspect classifier which applies monolingual and cross-language classification techniques is used to assemble automatically a large set of document segments on those same aspects. A test collection was designed for aspect classification by annotating consecutive sentences in documents from the Topic Detection and Tracking collections as aspect instances. Experiments show that classification effectiveness can often be increased by using training examples from both languages. Attitude characterization is achieved by classifiers which determine the subjectivity and polarity of document segments. Sentence attitude classification is the focus of the experiments in the dissertation because the best presently available test collection for Chinese attitude classification (the NTCIR-6 Chinese Opinion Analysis Pilot Task) is focused on sentence-level classification. A large Chinese sentiment lexicon was constructed by leveraging existing Chinese and English lexical resources, and an existing character-based approach for estimating the semantic orientation of other Chinese words was extended. A shallow linguistic analysis approach was adopted to classify the subjectivity and polarity of a sentence. Using the large sentiment lexicon with appropriate handling of negation, and leveraging sentence subjectivity density, sentence positivity and negativity, the resulting sentence attitude classifier was more effective than the best previously reported systems
