Analyzing bootsrap and foundation font-end frameworks : a comparative study

    Get PDF
Most modern web applications use some kind of front-end frameworks for designing and creating content in a faster and more efficient way, which saves valuable time when creating responsive web sites. There are many front-end frameworks that vary enormously in terms of features and benefits, which could make the choice of front-end framework for the developer tricky. In this context, this paper focuses on an effective analysis of two of today's most popular front-end frameworks, Boostrap and Foundation, The results show that our analysis can be beneficial for developers to select the appropriate front end framework to customize their web applications

Delivering knowledge and solutions at your fingertips:strategy for mobile app development in agriculture

    Get PDF
The mobile revolution transformed our lives in the ways we socialize and conduct business.  Today, mobile technology is an essential element of every aspect of digital success. More people are accessing the Internet through mobile devices than through wired connections.  Mobile device users are always connected, actively leveraging information, knowledge and social activities.  The rapid growth of mobile usage in the world created many opportunities that leverage the ubiquity of mobile networks.  Clearly mobile revolution will continue, and organizations not only create mobile strategy, they devote more resources to deliver innovative mobile services and next must-have applications (apps) for the agricultural sector.  There are many design challenges and considerations in developing mobile apps that can be widely accepted by users in agricultural communities.  This paper discusses mobile apps in the agricultural domain, considerations and challenges for successful mobile app development and focuses on a cross-platform mobile development approach adopted by University of Florida/Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS).  This cross-platform framework is an intuitive approach to developing apps quickly, easily and cost effectively.  A mobile portal and sample mobile apps developed at UF/IFAS are presented.  Effective and quality mobile app deployment in agriculture needs a clear mobile strategy, creative ideas and collective efforts from developers, domain experts and organizations

    Reinventing CS50

    Get PDF
Computer Science 50 is Harvard College’s introductory course for majors and non-majors alike, enrollment in which both rose and fell along with the dotcoms. Although enrollment peaked in 1996 at 386 students, it had settled by 2002 in the neighborhood of 100. We set out in 2007 to combat that trend by tackling two problems. We hypothesized that CS50 suffered from two, one of perception and one of design. Although, per end-of-term surveys, the course had never lacked for good teachers or good content, the consensus on campus for years had been to beware this particular course. And the course’s own syllabus may very well have been dated in the eyes of students who had begun to carry regularly modern hardware and software in their backpacks and pockets. Not only did we proceed to revamp every one of CS50’s problem sets, we brought its syllabus more in line with technological trends already familiar to students. And we altered the tone of the course to appeal to those “less comfortable” with computing on campus. But we took care to preserve the course’s rigor and underlying fundamentals, lest we do our own students a disservice. Our new approach appears to be working. Between 2006 and 2007, enrollment in CS50 more than doubled from 132 to 282 (+114%). Between 2007 and 2008, enrollment increased another 17% to 330, though even more striking was that year’s 48% increase in female enrollment. By 2009, enrollment remained strong at 338. We present in this work what we have done and why we have done it.Engineering and Applied Science

Characteristics of expert web site developers : creativity, construction of meaning, and problem solving/program development

    Get PDF
This thesis examines the areas that determine what characteristics produce an expert Web developer. The focus of the study is in the following three areas: creativity, construction of meaning, and problem solving. To date, no other formal study of this type has been reported. We know much about the World Wide Web itself, but nothing about the people who create the Web sites. This thesis shows that the idea of an expert Web developer is a misconception. The top-rated sites seem to have been created by a team of developers, each bringing to the group a strength in at least one of the areas mentioned above

Governing Networks and Rule-Making in Cyberspace

    Get PDF
The global network environment defies traditional regulatory theories and policymaking practices. At present, policymakers and private sector organizations are searching for appropriate regulatory strategies to encourage and channel the global information infrastructure (“GII”). Most attempts to define new rules for the development of the GII rely on disintegrating concepts of territory and sector, while ignoring the new network and technological borders that transcend national boundaries. The GII creates new models and sources for rules. Policy leadership requires a fresh approach to the governance of global networks. Instead of foundering on old concepts, the GII requires a new paradigm for governance that recognizes the complexity of networks, builds constructive relationships among the various participants (including governments, systems operators, information providers, and citizens), and promotes incentives for the attainment of various public policy objectives in the private sector

When Artists Break Ground: Lessons from a Cleveland Neighborhood Partnership

This report is a review and lessons from the Artists in Residence program, a collaboration between CPAC and Northeast Shores. The organizations invested $2.2 million in a 3-year period into artist-neighborhood relationships in the Waterloo area in North Shore Collinwood. The report shares how the process worked: its strengths, its shortcomings and third-party recommendations and reflections. A wealth of data supplements the report to illustrate changes in neighborhood residents' perceptions, traction among audiences and changes to the neighborhood's landscape

Interactive Computer Science Exercises In edX

    Get PDF
This project focuses on improving online learning courses for Computer Science. My approach is to create a platform in which interactive exercises can be implemented for students to work on. Methodology includes creating plugins for interactive exercises using XBlock, a component architecture for building independent online courses on edX. The exercises are based on existing exercises like CodeCheck and Wiley’s InterActivities Exercise System. In order to integrate these exercises, I implemented CodeCheck XBlock and Interactive XBlock. These Xblocks allow students to work on interactive exercises on edX, and instructors to view and download students’ submissions
