    Software reuse issues affecting AdaNET

    The AdaNet program is reviewing its long-term goals and strategies. A significant concern is whether current AdaNet plans adequately address the major strategic issues of software reuse technology. The major reuse issues of providing AdaNet services that should be addressed as part of future AdaNet development are identified and reviewed. Before significant development proceeds, a plan should be developed to resolve the aforementioned issues. This plan should also specify a detailed approach to develop AdaNet. A three phased strategy is recommended. The first phase would consist of requirements analysis and produce an AdaNet system requirements specification. It would consider the requirements of AdaNet in terms of mission needs, commercial realities, and administrative policies affecting development, and the experience of AdaNet and other projects promoting the transfer software engineering technology. Specifically, requirements analysis would be performed to better understand the requirements for AdaNet functions. The second phase would provide a detailed design of the system. The AdaNet should be designed with emphasis on the use of existing technology readily available to the AdaNet program. A number of reuse products are available upon which AdaNet could be based. This would significantly reduce the risk and cost of providing an AdaNet system. Once a design was developed, implementation would proceed in the third phase

    Electricity demand in Asia and the effects on energy supply and the investment environment

    Demand for energy (including electricity) has been increasing more rapidly in developing Asian economies than anywhere else in the world and is expected to continue growing. To meet rising demand, these countries must address such issues as how to meet the resulting enormous capital requirements and how to prevent environmental deterioration. To calculate what those capital requirements may be, and to estimate potential environmental damage, the authors built econometric energy demand models for seven economies: China, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Republic of Korea, Taiwan (China), and Thailand. They estimate that electricity demand will increase an average 8.1 percent a year between 1993 and 2010. To finance power development projects, many governments are encouraging"build, operate, and own"or"build, operate, transfer"schemes, but there is a limit to the use of these schemes, which require foreign capital and thus reimbursements in hard currency. Because the seven governments must mobilize substantial domestic resources to finance capital requirements, it is essential that these countries develop or strengthen development of domestic bond and stock markets.     Robust Low-Cost Cathode for Commercial Applications

    Under funding from the NASA Commercial Technology Office, a cathode assembly was designed, developed, fabricated, and tested for use in plasma sources for ground-based materials processing applications. The cathode development activity relied on the large prior NASA investment and successful development of high-current, high-efficiency, long-life hollow cathodes for use on the International Space Station Plasma Contactor System. The hollow cathode was designed and fabricated based on known engineering criteria and manufacturing processes for compatibility with the requirements of the plasma source. The transfer of NASA GRC-developed hollow cathode technology for use as an electron emitter in the commercial plasma source is anticipated to yield a significant increase in process control, while eliminating the present issues of electron emitter lifetime and contamination

    Data-driven and production-oriented tendering design using artificial intelligence

    Construction projects are facing an increase in requirements since the projects are getting larger, more technology is integrated into the buildings, and new sustainability and CO2 equivalent emissions requirements are introduced. As a result, requirement management quickly gets overwhelming, and instead of having systematic requirement management, the construction industry tends to trust craftsmanship. One method for a more systematic requirement management approach successful in other industries is the systems engineering approach, focusing on requirement decomposition and linking proper verifications and validations. This research project explores if a systems engineering approach, supported by natural language processing techniques, can enable more systematic requirement management in construction projects and facilitate knowledge transfer from completed projects to new tendering projects.The first part of the project explores how project requirements can be extracted, digitised, and analysed in an automated way and how this can benefit the tendering specialists. The study is conducted by first developing a work support tool targeting tendering specialists and then evaluating the challenges and benefits of such a tool through a workshop and surveys. The second part of the project explores inspection data generated in production software as a requirement and quality verification method. First, a dataset containing over 95000 production issues is examined to understand the data quality level of standardisation. Second, a survey addressing production specialists evaluates the current benefits of digital inspection reporting. Third, future benefits of using inspection data for knowledge transfers are explored by applying the Knowledge Discovery in Databases method and clustering techniques. The results show that applying natural language processing techniques can be a helpful tool for analysing construction project requirements, facilitating the identification of essential requirements, and enabling benchmarking between projects. The results from the clustering process suggested in this thesis show that inspection data can be used as a knowledge base for future projects and quality improvement within a project-based organisation. However, higher data quality and standardisation would benefit the knowledge-generation process.This research project provides insights into how artificial intelligence can facilitate knowledge transfer, enable data-informed design choices in tendering projects, and automate the requirements analysis in construction projects as a possible step towards more systematic requirements management

The aim is to address three research questions in the context of IT concerning (1) the educational frameworks relevant for academics and students of IT, (2) the pathways into IT programs, and (3) graduates\u27 preparation for meeting future technologies. The analysis of current trends comes from survey data of IT faculty members and professional IT industry leaders. With these analyses, the IT Model Curricula of CC2005, IT2008, IT2017, extensive literature review, and the multinational insights of the authors into the status of IT, this paper presents a comprehensive overview and discussion of future directions of global IT education toward 2025

    Learning requirements engineering within an engineering ethos

    An interest in educating software developers within an engineering ethos may not align well with the characteristics of the discipline, nor address the underlying concerns of software practitioners. Education for software development needs to focus on creativity, adaptability and the ability to transfer knowledge. A change in the way learning is undertaken in a core Software Engineering unit within a university's engineering program demonstrates one attempt to provide students with a solid foundation in subject matter while at the same time exposing them to these real-world characteristics. It provides students with a process to deal with problems within a metacognitive-rich framework that makes complexity apparent and lets students deal with it adaptively. The results indicate that, while the approach is appropriate, student-learning characteristics need to be investigated further, so that the two aspects of learning may be aligned more closely

    Collaborative working has become possible using the innovative integrated systems in construction as many activities are performed globally with stakeholders situated in various locations. The Integrated VR based information systems can bind the fragmentation and provide communication and collaboration between the distributed stakeholders n various locations. The development of these technologies is vital for the uptake of these systems by the construction industry. This paper starts by emphasising the importance of construction IT research and reviews some future research directions in this area. In particular, the paper explores how virtual prototyping can improve the productivity and effectiveness of construction projects, and presents DIVERCITY, which is th as a case study of the research in virtual prototyping. Besides, the paper explores the requirements engineering of the DIVERCITY project. DIVERCITY has large and evolving requirements, which considered the perspectives of multiple stakeholders, such as clients, architects and contractors. However, practitioners are often unsure of the detail of how virtual environments would support the construction process, and how to overcome some barriers to the introduction of new technologies. This complicates the requirements engineering process
