Integration of Control Systems: A Focus on Safety
PresentationThis abstract describes the importance of the design, integration and testing of control systems as a holistic structure in order to ensure process safety and operability. As a byproduct of todayâs era of large projects, it is increasingly common in the design and integration of modern control systems that individual components of the control systems are developed independently as standalone elements. This current trend in development focuses less on the integration of the components as a holistic system- including process control, safety logic, packaged equipment control, and operator interactions. These components, though having independent primary functions, must synchronize harmoniously to operate a facility with reliability and safety. The downside of independent testing is that while the shutdown functions of a safety system might be adequately checked, the interaction with the process control system could cause unforeseen results, leading to the inability to start up a process unit in an acceptable timeframe or even at all. Robust and standardized integrated testing of all components of a control system provides greater confidence in identifying potential operational or safety issues that could arise at commissioning or during operation, while allowing time to remedy with proper review and testing. Additionally, utilization of a process model or simulation can help to further strengthen confidence in the holistic system by simulating field devices to test logic in situ. Furthermore, this combined control system and process model can provide a higher level of operator training
Design and Development of Industrial Systems for Guidance and Control of Marine Surface Vessels
This paper discusses the design and development of industrial systems for guidance and control of marine surface vessels. In order to cover the large area of industrial marine guidance and control, focus has been given on the relatively high-level physical and logical design issues that dictate system capabilities, justified by a holistic view on GNC (Guidance, Navigation, and Control) systems. This project makes an effort to achieve this goal by structuring and categorizing the industrial systems and relating them to the academic framework found in the academic literature. This paper focuses on industrial methods of GNC and multi sensor monitoring system. Throughout this paper, an effort is made to relate issues, technical and safety wise to international regulations and standards in order to ensure realistic premises. The findings of this project are expected to be useful on developing remotely control self-navigated surface vessel which then could revolutionize the way of deploying and supporting underwater vehicle operation
Kajian Terapan Eko-Interior pada Objek Rancang Bangun Karya Baskoro Tedjo (Studi Kasus: Selasar Sunaryo Art Space di Bandung, Neo Calista Cafe di Bandung, dan Perpustakaan Bung Karno di Blitar)
Sustainable design appears as human effort in responsing the global environmental issues, which covers aspects of ecology as one of the main pillars. Eco-architecture and eco-interior appear as a single bi, therefore the existence of each influences each other. Dr. Ir. Baskoro Tedjo, MSEB. is one of Indonesia\u27s chief architects who has a view of eco-architecture in his works. The problem is still rare to find a design object with the implementation of a holistic eco interiors, especially in Indonesia. This study aims to examine the applied eco-Interior departing from ecological architecture to obtain comparative results of the three selected objects. The research method used is qualitive, using eco-interior\u27s parameters and aspects according to Kusumarini (2007). The analysis result shows that Baskoro Tedjo has consistency in the space organization, lighting systems, and air system aspects. On other aspects indicate that each object has vary applied focus to each other. The general conclusions can be drawn is the role of design principals and building managers influence the holistic applied eco interior. In particular, interior designer role in application of ecological interior, as a single entity with ecological architecture
Designing Reusable Systems that Can Handle Change - Description-Driven Systems : Revisiting Object-Oriented Principles
In the age of the Cloud and so-called Big Data systems must be increasingly
flexible, reconfigurable and adaptable to change in addition to being developed
rapidly. As a consequence, designing systems to cater for evolution is becoming
critical to their success. To be able to cope with change, systems must have
the capability of reuse and the ability to adapt as and when necessary to
changes in requirements. Allowing systems to be self-describing is one way to
facilitate this. To address the issues of reuse in designing evolvable systems,
this paper proposes a so-called description-driven approach to systems design.
This approach enables new versions of data structures and processes to be
created alongside the old, thereby providing a history of changes to the
underlying data models and enabling the capture of provenance data. The
efficacy of the description-driven approach is exemplified by the CRISTAL
project. CRISTAL is based on description-driven design principles; it uses
versions of stored descriptions to define various versions of data which can be
stored in diverse forms. This paper discusses the need for capturing holistic
system description when modelling large-scale distributed systems.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure and 1 table. Accepted by the 9th Int Conf on the

Critical perspectives on writing analytics
Writing Analytics focuses on the measurement and analysis of written texts for the purpose of understanding writing processes and products, in their educational contexts, and improving the teaching and learning of writing. This workshop adopts a critical, holistic perspective in which the definition of "the system" and "success" is not restricted to IR metrics such as precision and recall, but recognizes the many wider issues that aid or obstruct analytics adoption in educational settings, such as theoretical and pedagogical grounding, usability, user experience, stakeholder design engagement, practitioner development, organizational infrastructure, policy and ethics
An Evaluation View of an Ensemble Artefact for Decision Support using Action Design Research
This paper investigates the integration of content, context and process (CCP) into the Action Design Research (ADR) framework to account for the interplay of organisational issues in artefact design and development. The investigation is conducted through a case study in which successive ICT student teams incrementally build, over several semesters, a tailored, low cost business intelligence (BI) system as an ensemble artefact for an organisation in the not-for-profit (NFP) sector. During project development, CCPâs human-centred approach to evaluation complements ADRâs more prescribed technology-driven software testing. The integration of CCP into ADR as an evaluation view offers an holistic approach to assessing an ensemble artefact. The resultant conceptual framework is presented as a model with an explication of unexpected design and research outcomes
Introducing a Socio-Technical Perspective on Digital Competence Education Through Co-design
Digital competence and programming have been part of the Swedish school curricula since 2018. This paper demonstrates how co-design design activities can be conducted as a way to provide digital competence education from a socio-technical perspective. Such activities were conducted with novice designers in three sessions, each with two school classes, from a Swedish engineering upper secondary school program in 2019. The students gained hands-on experience with interaction design and co-design as they designed a mobile application using a Wizard-of-Oz prototyping system and evaluated the prototype with users. This trial is used to argue that time allocation for socio-technical perspectives on digital competence in the Swedish school curricula can be expanded to be able to provide students with a more holistic view of digitization beyond technical issues
Evolution of Serious Games to Support Lifelong Learning and Decision Making: Design and Implementation of a Financial Literacy Game
Considering the economic changes of recent time, financial literacy arises as a focal point of interest. COVID-19, coupled with the culmination of other societal issues, underlines the importance of understanding sensible personal finance. Nationwide lockdown and other economic constraints put us in immobilised positions to confide in safe and accessible entertainment havens such as games. Herein lies an interesting research opportunity to progress personal wellbeing and capability despite the extant issues of recent times. The paper demonstrates the design and implementation of an evolving serious game that supports lifelong learning and decision making relating to personal finance. The example is a useful account of serious gamesâ evolutionary potential to incrementally support users through lifelong learning. The gameâs holistic design incorporates autonomy, motivation, and support structures to ensure that lifelong learning and decision making is effectively managed through an evolving system. The corresponding implementation evidences the sheer potential of serious games
