Constructing a Virtual Training Laboratory Using Intelligent Agents

This paper reports on the results and experiences of the Trilogy project; a collaborative project concerned with the development of a virtual research laboratory using intelligence agents. This laboratory is designed to support the training of research students in telecommunications traffic engineering. Training research students involves a number of basic activities. They may seek guidance from, or exchange ideas with, more experienced colleagues. High quality academic papers, books and research reports provide a sound basis for developing and maintaining a good understanding of an area of research. Experimental tools enable new ideas to be evaluated, and hypotheses tested. These three components-collaboration, information and experimentation- are central to any research activity, and a good training environment for research should integrate them in a seamless fashion. A component-based product line architecture for workflow management systems

This paper presents a component-based product line for workflow management systems. The process followed to design the product line was based on the Catalysis method. Extensions were made to represent variability across the process. The domain of workflow management systems has been shown to be appropriate to the application of the product line approach as there are a standard architecture and models established by a regulatory board, the Workflow Management Coalition. In addition, there is a demand for similar workflow management systems but with some different features. The product line architecture was evaluated with Rapide simulation tools. The evaluation was based on selected scenarios, thus, avoiding implementation issues. The strategy that has been used to populate the architecture and experiment with the product line is shown. Modular HLA RTI services: The GRIDS approach

The Generic Runtime Infrastructure for Distributed Simulation (GRIDS) has been developed to investigate modularity issues in distributed simulation. It could be argued that although the HLA RTI is a widespread solution to distributed simulation, it cannot include all possible services. This paper investigates an approach to extending the distributed simulation services available in the HLA RTI. One example of this is bridging support for HLA/DIS legacy integration. This paper therefore presents GRIDS, how GRIDS can be used to provide modular service support for the HLA RTI, and a case study on legacy integration to demonstrate our approach

Object-Oriented Business Solutions

This report summarises the presentations, discussions, and main results of the ECOOP’01 Workshop on Object-Oriented Business Solutions (WOOBS). It was not a pure scientific meeting, but a mixed gathering where people from the industry and the academia met to exchange ideas, experiences and build a network of relationships with others committed to the emergence of object-oriented business solutions. WOOBS had an invited talk on quality of service, twelve presentations and lively discussions during and after them. The main conclusions were on the importance of Multi-Organisational Web-Based Systems in today’s e-commerce world, which justifies the study of a new multidisciplinary paradigm called Web-Oriented Programming

Forum Session at the First International Conference on Service Oriented Computing (ICSOC03)

The First International Conference on Service Oriented Computing (ICSOC) was held in Trento, December 15-18, 2003. The focus of the conference ---Service Oriented Computing (SOC)--- is the new emerging paradigm for distributed computing and e-business processing that has evolved from object-oriented and component computing to enable building agile networks of collaborating business applications distributed within and across organizational boundaries. Of the 181 papers submitted to the ICSOC conference, 10 were selected for the forum session which took place on December the 16th, 2003. The papers were chosen based on their technical quality, originality, relevance to SOC and for their nature of being best suited for a poster presentation or a demonstration. This technical report contains the 10 papers presented during the forum session at the ICSOC conference. In particular, the last two papers in the report ere submitted as industrial papers

AgentAPI: an API for the development of managed agents

Managed agents, namely SNMP agents, costs too much to develop, test and maintain. Although assuming simplicity since its origins, the SNMP model has several intrinsic aspects that make the development of management applications a complex task. However, there are tools available which intend to simplify this process by generating automatic code based on the management information definition. Unfortunately, these tools are usually complicated to use and require a strong background of programming experience and network management knowledge. This paper describes an API for managed agent development which also provides multiprotocol capabilities. Without changing the code, the resulting agent can be managed by SNMP, web browsers, wap browsers, CORBA or any other access method either simultaneously or individually
