Imaging Extended Emission-Line Regions of Obscured AGN with the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam Survey
Narrow-line regions excited by active galactic nuclei (AGN) are important for
studying AGN photoionization and feedback. Their strong [O III] lines can be
detected with broadband images, allowing morphological studies of these systems
with large-area imaging surveys. We develop a new technique to reconstruct the
[O III] images using the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Survey aided with
spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The technique involves a
careful subtraction of the galactic continuum to isolate emission from the [O
III]5007 and [O III]4959 lines. Compared to traditional
targeted observations, this technique is more efficient at covering larger
samples with less dedicated observational resources. We apply this technique to
an SDSS spectroscopically selected sample of 300 obscured AGN at redshifts 0.1
- 0.7, uncovering extended emission-line region candidates with sizes up to
tens of kpc. With the largest sample of uniformly derived narrow-line region
sizes, we revisit the narrow-line region size-luminosity relation. The area and
radii of the [O III] emission-line regions are strongly correlated with the AGN
luminosity inferred from the mid-infrared (15 m rest-frame) with a
power-law slope of (statistical and systemic
errors), consistent with previous spectroscopic findings. We discuss the
implications for the physics of AGN emission-line region and future
applications of this technique, which should be useful for current and
next-generation imaging surveys to study AGN photoionization and feedback with

The Dwarf Galaxy Population of the Dorado group down to Mv=-11
We present V and I CCD photometry of suspected low-surface brightness dwarf
galaxies detected in a survey covering ~2.4 deg^2 around the central region of
the Dorado group of galaxies. The low-surface brightness galaxies were chosen
based on their sizes and magnitudes at the limiting isophote of 26.0V\mu. The
selected galaxies have magnitudes brighter than V=20 (Mv=-11 for an assumed
distance to the group of 17.2 Mpc), with central surface brightnesses \mu0>22.5
V mag/arcsec^2, scale lengths h>2'', and diameters > 14'' at the limiting
isophote. Using these criteria, we identified 69 dwarf galaxy candidates. Four
of them are large very low-surface brightness galaxies that were detected on a
smoothed image, after masking high surface brightness objects. Monte Carlo
simulations performed to estimate completeness, photometric uncertainties and
to evaluate our ability to detect extended low-surface brightness galaxies show
that the completeness fraction is, on average, > 80% for dwarf galaxies with
and 22.5<\mu0<25.5 V mag/arcsec^2, for the range of sizes
considered by us (D>14''). The V-I colors of the dwarf candidates vary from
-0.3 to 2.3 with a peak on V-I=0.98, suggesting a range of different stellar
populations in these galaxies. The projected surface density of the dwarf
galaxies shows a concentration towards the group center similar in extent to
that found around five X-ray groups and the elliptical galaxy NGC1132 studied
by Mulchaey and Zabludoff (1999), suggesting that the dwarf galaxies in Dorado
are probably physically associated with the overall potential well of the

Optical photometry of the UCM Lists I and II
We present Johnson B CCD photometry for the whole sample of galaxies of the
Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) Survey Lists I and II. They constitute
a well-defined and complete sample of galaxies in the Local Universe with
active star formation. The data refer to 191 S0 to Irr galaxies at an averaged
redshift of 0.027, and complement the already published Gunn r, J and K
photometries. In this paper the observational and reduction features are
discussed in detail, and the new colour information is combined to search for
clues on the properties of the galaxies, mainly by comparing our sample with

The extensive age gradient of the Carina dwarf galaxy
The evolution of small systems such as dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSph) is
likely to have been a balance between external environmental effects and
internal processes within their own relatively shallow potential wells.
Assessing how strong such environmental interactions may have been is therefore
an important element in understanding the baryonic evolution of dSphs and their
derived dark matter distribution.
Here we present results from a wide-area CTIO/MOSAIC II photometric survey of
the Carina dSph, reaching down to about two magnitudes below the oldest main
sequence turn-off (MSTO). This data-set enables us to trace the structure of
Carina in detail out to very large distances from its center, and as a function
of stellar age.
We observe the presence of an extended structure made up primarily of ancient
MSTO stars, at distances between 25arcmin-60arcmin from Carina's center,
confirming results in the literature that Carina extends well beyond its
nominal tidal radius.
The large number statistics of our survey reveals features such as isophote
twists and tails that had gone undetected in other previous shallower surveys.
This is the first time that such unambiguous signs of tidal disruption have
been found in a Milky Way "classical" dwarf other than Sagittarius.
We also demonstrate the presence of a negative age gradient in Carina
directly from its MSTOs, and trace it out to very large distances from the
galaxy center. The signs of interaction with the Milky Way make it unclear
whether the age gradient was already in place before Carina underwent tidal

Disc galaxies with multiple triaxial structures. II. JHK surface photometry and numerical simulations
We present detailed JHK surface photometry with ellipse fits of 13 galaxies
selected from previous optical observations as likely candidates for having a
secondary bar or a triaxial bulge within the primary bar. We have found 7
double-barred galaxies, 3 double-barred galaxies with an additional
intermediate structure with twisted isophotes, and 3 galaxies with a bar and
central twisted isophotes. A global analysis of the structural parameter
characteristics in the I- and K-bands is presented. Various numerical models of
galaxies with bars within bars are also analysed using the ellipse fitting
technique and compared to the observations. A thorough review of the possible
hypotheses able to explain this phenomenon is given with emphasis on the most

Optical photometry of the UCM Lists I and II. II-B band surface photometry and morphological discussion
We present Johnson B surface photometry for the UCM Survey galaxies.
One-dimensional bulge-disk decomposition is attempted, discussing on fitting
functions and computational procedures. The results from this decomposition,
jointly with concentration indices and an asymmetry coefficient, are employed
to study the morphological properties of these galaxies. We also compare our
results with the previous morphological classification established using Gunn r
imaging data and with other samples of galaxies. No major statistical
differences in morphology are found between red and blue data, although some
characteristics such as size and luminosity concentration vary. We find a
correlation between luminosity and size. Several parameters are used to
