    The role of logical interpretations on program development

    Stepwise refinement of algebraic specifications is a well known formal methodology for program development. However, traditional notions of refinement based on signature morphisms are often too rigid to capture a number of relevant transformations in the context of software design, reuse, and adaptation. This paper proposes a new approach to refinement in which signature morphisms are replaced by logical interpretations as a means to witness refinements. The approach is first presented in the context of equational logic, and later generalised to deductive systems of arbitrary dimension. This allows, for example, refining sentential into equational specifications and the latter into modal ones.The authors express their gratitude to the anonymous referees who raised a number of pertinent questions entailing a more precise characterisation of the paper's contributions and a clarification of their scope.     A Service Description Framework for Service Ecosystems

    Recently, service orientation has strongly influenced the way enterprise applications are built. Service ecosystems, which provide means to trade services between companies like goods, are an evaluation of service orientation. To allow service ordering, discovering, selection, and consumption, a common way to describe services is a necessity. This paper discusses existing approaches to describe certain service aspects. Finally, a Service Description Framework for service ecosystems is proposed and exemplified

    Symbolic Object Code Analysis

    Current software model checkers quickly reach their limit when being applied to verifying pointer safety properties in source code that includes function pointers and inlined assembly. This paper introduces an alternative technique for checking pointer safety violations, called Symbolic Object Code Analysis (SOCA), which is based on bounded symbolic execution, incorporates path-sensitive slicing, and employs the SMT solver Yices as its execution and verification engine. Extensive experimental results of a prototypic SOCA Verifier, using the Verisec suite and almost 10,000 Linux device driver functions as benchmarks, show that SOCA performs competitively to current source-code model checkers and that it also scales well when applied to real operating systems code and pointer safety issues.     Optimized Buffering of Time-Triggered Automotive Software

    The development of an automotive system involves the integration of many real-time software functionalities, and it is of utmost importance to guarantee strict timing requirements. However, the recent trend towards multi-core architectures poses significant challenges for the timely transfer of signals between processor cores so as to not violate data consistency. We have studied and adapted an existing buffering mechanism to work specifically for statically scheduled time-triggered systems, called static buffering protocol. We developed further buffering optimisation algorithms and heuristics, to reduce the memory consumption, processor utilisation, and end-to-end response times of time-triggered AUTOSAR designs on multi-core platforms. Our contributions are important because they enable deterministic time-triggered implementations to become competitive alternatives to their inherently non-deterministic event-triggered counterparts. We have prototyped a selection of optimisations in an industrial tool and evaluated them on realistic industrial automotive benchmarks
