An Efficient, Fast Converging Adaptive Filter for Network Echo Cancellation
This paper discusses a fast efficient adaptive filtering algorithm for network echo cancellers PNLMS++ (proportionate normalized least mean squares ++). Compared to the conventional normalized least mean squares (NLMS) algorithm, PNLMSI++ converges much more quickly when the echo path is sparse. When the echo path is dispersive, the convergence rate is the same as NLMS. In addition, the new algorithm diverges at the same rate and to the same misalignment level as NLMS during periods of undetected double-talk. PNLMS++ is only 50% more computationally complex than NLMS and requires no additional memor
Simultaneous Transmission and Reception: Algorithm, Design and System Level Performance
Full Duplex or Simultaneous transmission and reception (STR) in the same
frequency at the same time can potentially double the physical layer capacity.
However, high power transmit signal will appear at receive chain as echoes with
powers much higher than the desired received signal. Therefore, in order to
achieve the potential gain, it is imperative to cancel these echoes. As these
high power echoes can saturate low noise amplifier (LNA) and also digital
domain echo cancellation requires unrealistically high resolution
analog-to-digital converter (ADC), the echoes should be cancelled or suppressed
sufficiently before LNA. In this paper we present a closed-loop echo
cancellation technique which can be implemented purely in analogue domain. The
advantages of our method are multiple-fold: it is robust to phase noise, does
not require additional set of antennas, can be applied to wideband signals and
the performance is irrelevant to radio frequency (RF) impairments in transmit
chain. Next, we study a few protocols for STR systems in carrier sense multiple
access (CSMA) network and investigate MAC level throughput with realistic
assumptions in both single cell and multiple cells. We show that STR can reduce
hidden node problem in CSMA network and produce gains of up to 279% in maximum
throughput in such networks. Finally, we investigate the application of STR in
cellular systems and study two new unique interferences introduced to the
system due to STR, namely BS-BS interference and UE-UE interference. We show
that these two new interferences will hugely degrade system performance if not
treated appropriately. We propose novel methods to reduce both interferences
and investigate the performances in system level.Comment: 20 pages. This manuscript will appear in the IEEE Transactions on

Using heterogeneous satellites for passive detection of moving aerial target
Passive detection of a moving aerial target is critical for intelligent surveillance. Its implementation can use signals transmitted from satellites. Nowadays, various types of satellites co-exist which can be used for passive detection. As a result, a satellite signal receiver may receive signals from multiple heterogeneous satellites, causing difficult in echo signal detection. In this paper, a passive moving aerial target detection method leveraging signals from multiple heterogeneous satellites is proposed. In the proposed method, a plurality of direct wave signals is separated in a reference channel first. Then, an adaptive filter with normalized least-mean-square (NLMS) is adopted to suppress direct-path interference (DPI) and multi-path interference (MPI) in a surveillance channel. Next, the maximum values of the cross ambiguity function (CAF) and the fourth order cyclic cumulants cross ambiguity function (FOCCCAF) correspond into each separated direct wave signal and echo signal will be utilized as the detection statistic of each distributed sensor. Finally, final detection probabilities are calculated by decision fusion based on results from distributed sensors. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, extensive simulation studies are conducted. The corresponding simulation results show that the proposed fusion detection method can significantly improve the reliability of moving aerial target detection using multiple heterogeneous satellites. Moveover, we also show that the proposed detection method is able to significantly improve the detection performance by using multiple collaborative heterogeneous satellites
Performance Investigation on Scan-On-Receive and Adaptive Digital Beam-Forming for High-Resolution Wide-Swath Synthetic Aperture Radar
The work investigates the performance of the Smart Multi-Aperture Radar Technique (SMART) Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) system for high-resolution wide-swath imaging based on Scan-on-Receive (SCORE) algorithm for receive beam steering. SCORE algorithm works under model mismatch conditions in presence of topographic height. A study on the potentiality of an adaptive approach for receive beam steering based on spatial spectral estimation is presented. The impact of topographic height on SCORE performance in different operational scenarios is examined, with reference to a realistic SAR system. The SCORE performance is compared to that of the adaptive approach by using the CramĂšr Rao lower bound analysis
Robustness of ToF estimators - an Empirical Evaluation
The performance of ToF estimators for acoustic tone bursts is empirically evaluated. In indoor applications, the observed waveform is likely to be disrupted by multiple echoes. These echoes can cause complex interference patterns. The paper presents the results of a comparison study of the robustness of various ToF estimators against such type of disruptions
High Speed Dim Air Target Detection Using Airborne Radar under Clutter and Jamming Effects
The challenging potential problems associated with using airborne radar in detection of high Speed Maneuvering Dim Target (HSMDT) are the highly noise, jamming and clutter effects. The problem is not only how to remove clutter and jamming as well as the range migration and Doppler ambiguity estimation problems due to high relative speed between the targets and airborne radar. Some of the recently published works ignored the range migration problems, while the others ignored the Doppler ambiguity estimation. In this paper a new hybrid technique using Optimum Space Time Adaptive Processing (OSTAP), Second Order Keystone Transform (SOKT), and the Improved Fractional Radon Transform (IFrRT) was proposed. The OSTAP was applied as anti-jamming and clutter rejection method, the SOKT corrects the range curvature and part of the range walk, then the IFrRT estimates the targetâ radial acceleration and corrects the residual range walk. The simulation demonstrates the validity and effectiveness of the proposed technique, and its advantages over the previous researches by comparing its probability of detection with the traditional methods. The new approach increases the probability of detection, and also overcomes the limitation of Doppler frequency ambiguity
