    Land Use Influence on the Characteristics of Groundwater Inputs to the Great Bay Estuary, New Hampshire

    This research examines the sources and factors affecting nutrient-laden groundwater discharge to the Great Bay Estuary. To further understand this relationship, examination of groundwater residence time, a review of historic land uses, and nitrate source tracking strategies were used. Seven submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) sites were selected, and groundwater monitoring networks were installed to examine the relationship between land use and groundwater quality at the discharge zones. Field activities were performed in the summer and fall of 2003 and 2004. Estuarine water intrusion in groundwater discharge samples confounded the analyses for major ion chemistry and boron isotopes. CFC-derived and modeled groundwater ages in the study area averaged 23.2 years (±15.0 years). CFC analysis enabled correlation of nitrate concentrations at the SGD sites with the historic land use coverage for the years 1974 (for most of the sites) or 1962 (SGD 58.4). Two types of correlation were made: 1) between the agricultural and residential land use for all observed nitrate concentrations in the recharge areas, and 2) correlation with the nitrate concentrations between developed and undeveloped land uses. Both statistical correlations (Kendall’s Tau and Spearman’s Rho) indicated a connection between the increase of residential land use of the last three decades with the high nitrate-bearing groundwater discharging to the Great Bay (NH). The geochemical composition of the SGD water was also investigated by using simple mixing models that attempted to explain the water chemistry characteristics of the targeted SGD sites. Based on these models it was concluded that overburden groundwater comprises 75% to 95% of the groundwater discharging at the SGD sites. A significant correlation (Tau’s, p=0.021) between nitrate-bearing groundwater and CFCderived groundwater ages was detected supporting the hypothesis that high nitrate bearing groundwater will be discharged to the Great Bay in the near future accounting for the increase of residential land use of 1990’s. Continuous monitoring of SGD sites was suggested to be included as part of the periodic environmental quality monitoring activities of the Great Bay. Long-term step-wise sampling for groundwater dating is required to develop a stronger chronological evolution of groundwater nitrate inputs. Further research should concentrate on detailing the overburden water chemistry, flow paths, and nitrogen loading characteristics

    Segmented switchers and retailer pricing strategies

    Empirical studies reveal a surprisingly wide variety of price promotion strategies among retailers, even among Internet sellers of undifferentiated homogenous goods such as books and music CD’s. Several empirical findings remain puzzling, particularly that within the same market some small retailers decide to deeply discount, while other small retailers forgo the price-sensitive switchers and price high to play their niche. We present theoretical and empirical analyses that address these varied pricing strategies. Our model of three asymmetric firms shows that under multiple switcher segments, where different switchers compare prices at different retailers, firm-specific loyalty is not sufficient to explain the variety of retailer pricing strategies. We demonstrate that a retailer’s pricing strategy is driven by the ratio of the size of switcher segments for which the retailer competes to its loyal segment size. The relative switcher-to-loyal ratios among retailers explain when a firm is more or less inclined to discount deeply or frequently. We thereby identify when a small firm finds it optimal to play the niche and price high, despite having few loyals, or to discount and go for the switchers. Our analysis reveals several interesting findings, such as a small firm that benefits from strategically limiting its access to switchers. The results of two empirical studies confirm our model’s predictions for varied retailer pricing strategies in the context of Internet booksellers

    Deeper Integration and Voting on the Common European External Tariff

    Since the 1987 Single European Act, the European Union has deepened its integration process. In the case of the determination of the common external tariff, deeper integration implies that the tariff reflected union-wide preferences. If integration is still shallow, though, the observed tariff will reflect the preferences of a pivotal national government. How governments voted, however, was not public information. This paper uses a unique dataset to test the deep vs. shallow integration hypothesis in an effort to shed light on how decisions are made in the EU.     Strategies for Representing Tone in African Writing Systems

    Tone languages provide some interesting challenges for the designers of new orthographies. One approach is to omit tone marks, just as stress is not marked in English (zero marking). Another approach is to do phonemic tone analysis and then make heavy use of diacritic symbols to distinguish the `tonemes' (exhaustive marking). While orthographies based on either system have been successful, this may be thanks to our ability to manage inadequate orthographies rather than to any intrinsic advantage which is afforded by one or the other approach. In many cases, practical experience with both kinds of orthography in sub-Saharan Africa has shown that people have not been able to attain the level of reading and writing fluency that we know to be possible for the orthographies of non-tonal languages. In some cases this can be attributed to a sociolinguistic setting which does not favour vernacular literacy. In other cases, the orthography itself might be to blame. If the orthography of a tone language is difficult to user or to learn, then a good part of the reason, I believe, is that the designer either has not paid enough attention to the function of tone in the language, or has not ensured that the information encoded in the orthography is accessible to the ordinary (non-linguist) user of the language. If the writing of tone is not going to continue to be a stumbling block to literacy efforts, then a fresh approach to tone orthography is required, one which assigns high priority to these two factors. This article describes the problems with orthographies that use too few or too many tone marks, and critically evaluates a wide range of creative intermediate solutions. I review the contributions made by phonology and reading theory, and provide some broad methodological principles to guide someone who is seeking to represent tone in a writing system. The tone orthographies of several languages from sub-Saharan Africa are presented throughout the article, with particular emphasis on some tone languages of Cameroon

    GaBoDS: The Garching-Bonn Deep Survey -- IX. A sample of 158 shear-selected mass concentration candidates

    The aim of the present work is the construction of a mass-selected galaxy cluster sample based on weak gravitational lensing methods. This sample will be subject to spectroscopic follow-up observations. We apply the mass aperture statistics and a derivative of it to 19 square degrees of high quality, single colour wide field imaging data obtained with the WFI@MPG/ESO 2.2m telescope. For the statistics a family of filter functions is used that approximates the expected tangential radial shear profile and thus allows for the efficient detection of mass concentrations. We identify 158 possible mass concentrations. This is the first time that such a large and blindly selected sample is published. 72 of the detections are associated with concentrations of bright galaxies. For about 22 of those we found spectra in the literature, indicating or proving that the galaxies seen are indeed spatially concentrated. 15 of those were previously known to be clusters or have meanwhile been secured as such. We currently follow-up a larger number of them spectroscopically to obtain deeper insight into their physical properties. The remaining 55% of the possible mass concentrations found are not associated with any optical light, or could not be classified unambiguously.
