    Modeling of occupant's head movement behavior in motion sickness study via time delay neural network

    Passengers are more susceptible to experiencing motion sickness (MS) than drivers. The difference in the severity of MS is due to their different head movement behavior during curve driving. When negotiating a curve, the passengers tilt their heads towards the lateral acceleration direction while the drivers tilt their heads against it. Thus, to reduce the passengers’ level of MS, they need to reduce their head’s tilting angle towards the lateral acceleration direction. Designing MS minimization strategies is easier if the correlation between the head movement and lateral acceleration is known mathematically. Therefore, this paper proposes the utilization of a time delay neural network (TDNN) to model the correlation of the occupant’s head movement and lateral acceleration. An experiment was conducted to gather real-time data for the modeling process. The results show that TDNN manages to model the correlation by producing a similar output response to the actual response. Thus, it is expected that the correlation model could be used as an occupant’s head movement predictor tool in future studies of MS

    Motion sickness mitigation in autonomous vehicle: a mini-review

    An autonomous vehicle is a rapidly evolving technology that received attention from researchers due to its potential benefits. Besides the advantages, there are also non-negligible issues that need to be overcome in the middle of the autonomous vehicle development process. Among all the challenges, one of the important topics that have not gained adequate consideration is motion sickness (MS). This paper reviews the benefit and challenges of autonomous vehicles, MS factors, the quantifying methods of MS, and the mitigation strategies of MS. Considering the importance of minimizing MS, it is concluded that the number of strategies to lessen MS's severity is still lacking; hence, requiring more attention from automotive researchers

    Application of machine learning techniques for railway health monitoring

    Emerging wireless sensor networking (WSN) and modern machine learning techniques have encouraged interest in the development of vehicle health monitoring (VHM) systems that ensure secure and reliable operation of the rail vehicle. The performance of rail vehicles running on railway tracks is governed by the dynamic behaviours of railway bogies especially in the cases of lateral instability and track irregularities. In order to ensure safety and reliability of railway in this chapter, a forecasting model has been developed to investigate vertical acceleration behaviour of railway wagons attached to a moving locomotive using modern machine learning techniques. Initially, an energy-efficient data acquisition model has been proposed for WSN applications using popular learning algorithms. Later, a prediction model has been developed to investigate both front and rear body vertical acceleration behaviour. Different types of models can be built using a uniform platform to evaluate their performances and estimate different attributes’ correlation coefficient (CC), root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), root relative squared error (RRSE), relative absolute error (RAE) and computation complexity for each of the algorithm. Finally, spectral analysis of front and rear body vertical condition is produced from the predicted data using Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and used to generate precautionary signals and system status which can be used by the locomotive driver for deciding upon necessary actions

    Driving-Style Assessment from a Motion Sickness Perspective Based on Machine Learning Techniques

    Ride comfort improvement in driving scenarios is gaining traction as a research topic. This work presents a direct methodology that utilizes measured car signals and combines data processing techniques and machine learning algorithms in order to identify driver actions that negatively affect passenger motion sickness. The obtained clustering models identify distinct driving patterns and associate them with the motion sickness levels suffered by the passenger, allowing a comfort-based driving recommendation system that reduces it. The designed and validated methodology shows satisfactory results, achieving (from a real datasheet) trained models that identify diverse interpretable clusters, while also shedding light on driving pattern differences.     Preview-based techniques for vehicle suspension control: a state-of-the-art review

    Abstract Automotive suspension systems are key to ride comfort and handling performance enhancement. In the last decades semi-active and active suspension configurations have been the focus of intensive automotive engineering research, and have been implemented by the industry. The recent advances in road profile measurement and estimation systems make road-preview-based suspension control a viable solution for production vehicles. Despite the availability of a significant body of papers on the topic, the literature lacks a comprehensive and up-to-date survey on the variety of proposed techniques for suspension control with road preview, and the comparison of their effectiveness. To cover the gap, this literature review deals with the research conducted over the past decades on the topic of semi-active and active suspension controllers with road preview. The main formulations are reported for each control category, and the respective features are critically analysed, together with the most relevant performance indicators. The paper also discusses the effect of the road preview time on the resulting system performance, and identifies control development trends

    A Context Aware Classification System for Monitoring Driver’s Distraction Levels

    Understanding the safety measures regarding developing self-driving futuristic cars is a concern for decision-makers, civil society, consumer groups, and manufacturers. The researchers are trying to thoroughly test and simulate various driving contexts to make these cars fully secure for road users. Including the vehicle’ surroundings offer an ideal way to monitor context-aware situations and incorporate the various hazards. In this regard, different studies have analysed drivers’ behaviour under different case scenarios and scrutinised the external environment to obtain a holistic view of vehicles and the environment. Studies showed that the primary cause of road accidents is driver distraction, and there is a thin line that separates the transition from careless to dangerous. While there has been a significant improvement in advanced driver assistance systems, the current measures neither detect the severity of the distraction levels nor the context-aware, which can aid in preventing accidents. Also, no compact study provides a complete model for transitioning control from the driver to the vehicle when a high degree of distraction is detected. The current study proposes a context-aware severity model to detect safety issues related to driver’s distractions, considering the physiological attributes, the activities, and context-aware situations such as environment and vehicle. Thereby, a novel three-phase Fast Recurrent Convolutional Neural Network (Fast-RCNN) architecture addresses the physiological attributes. Secondly, a novel two-tier FRCNN-LSTM framework is devised to classify the severity of driver distraction. Thirdly, a Dynamic Bayesian Network (DBN) for the prediction of driver distraction. The study further proposes the Multiclass Driver Distraction Risk Assessment (MDDRA) model, which can be adopted in a context-aware driving distraction scenario. Finally, a 3-way hybrid CNN-DBN-LSTM multiclass degree of driver distraction according to severity level is developed. In addition, a Hidden Markov Driver Distraction Severity Model (HMDDSM) for the transitioning of control from the driver to the vehicle when a high degree of distraction is detected. This work tests and evaluates the proposed models using the multi-view TeleFOT naturalistic driving study data and the American University of Cairo dataset (AUCD). The evaluation of the developed models was performed using cross-correlation, hybrid cross-correlations, K-Folds validation. The results show that the technique effectively learns and adopts safety measures related to the severity of driver distraction. In addition, the results also show that while a driver is in a dangerous distraction state, the control can be shifted from driver to vehicle in a systematic manner
